Land allotted for graveyard: Punjab Wakf Board has allocated three acres of land in this town for the members of the Muslim community to set up a burial place. Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Punjab Wakf Board, Khushi Mohammad said land measuring three acres and located near Panj Peer place in this town, would be handed over to members of Muslim community after September 28.

Quiz competitions:
The State Education Department is going to hold three-tier science and mathematics quiz competitions for the students of upper primary classes (VI, VII and VIII) of all government schools across the state. As per the information, the competition will be organised in a team-wise manner with the mandatory participation of one team from each school. The department has asked the school principals and head teachers to send a list of three willing students from their school. DEO (secondary) Harbans Singh Sandhu said the step was being taken up to encourage students to show more concern towards the science and mathematics, the subject in which generally they lagged behind.

CHANDIGARH
DCs told to collect encroachment details: A letter written by the Punjab Government to all DCs has directed them to collect specific information on encroachments at religious sites in the state and submit a report on the same. The DCs have been asked to give details of encroachments that can be regularised and also to evolve mechanisms to ensure these do not happen in future. The officers have been given time till October 15 to carry out the exercise.

Gherao of Assembly  postponed: The Chamar Maha Sabha today announced postponement of its proposed gherao of Punjab Assembly to September 30 instead of earlier September 27. President of the sabha Paramjit Singh Kainth made a formal announcement in this regard today. Kainth added that though the sabha has mobilised its cadre for the gherao of the State Assembly, but the state government made a U-turn and the ongoing session of the State Assembly had been suspended up to September 29.

Mother, daughter killed:
In bizarre incident, unknown assailants killed Daljeet Kaur and her married daughter Manjeet Kaur, while both were sleeping in their house, located in Basti Sarupewala of this town on Friday. SHO, local police station, Baljinder Singh said efforts were on to identify the assailants involved in the crime. A case under Section 302 of the IPC had been registered.

Karimpuri shows concern:
President of the Punjab unit of the Bahujan Samaj Party and Rajya Sabha MP Avtar Singh Karimpuri has expressed concern over the recent spurt in murders and chain snatching incidents in the town. In a press note released here today, Karimpuri demanded the formation of a special investigation team for cracking the murder cases. Meanwhile, local leaders of various political parties constituted the Vikas Manch Punjab to taking up public issues with 
the administration for their solution.

Phagwara
Goods gutted:
Goods worth lakhs of rupees, including clothes, ready-made garments and chemicals drums, were gutted in a fire, which broke in a Ludhiana-bound truck of Nav Bharat Transport Co near Elite Theatre on the national highway in the wee hours here today. Seven fire tenders took more than four hours to contain the fire. Truck driver Ranbir Singh said he was coming from Amritsar when his truck suddenly caught fire.

Orders withdrawn: The orders issued by Chandigarh Deputy Commissioner Brijendra Singh prohibiting public in general or any member thereof from forming an assembly of five or more persons, taking out processions, making speeches, raising slogans, sitting on dharnas, carrying lathis within Chandigarh, for two days is hereby rescinded.

Appointed: The UT Administration has appointed Kanwaljit Singh, IPS (retd) as a member of the Police Complaints Authority, Chandigarh, in place of AA Siddiqui, IPS (retd).
