Threat of waterborne diseases looms

New Delhi, September 24
As the Capital grapples with flood, with several areas from Chilla Village to Old Yamuna Bridge being submerged in nearly knee-deep water, an increased onslaught of water and mosquito-borne diseases seems to be waiting to strike. Though the authorities are fogging and spraying across the city, the coming days could see a spiral in not only dengue but also typhoid, jaundice, gastroenteritis, malaria and cholera.

Areas like, Sonia Vihar, Usmanpur, Chilla Village, Majnu Ka Tila, Mayur Vihar, Burari and Geeta Colony are on the high radar as the water stagnating around these areas would leave a fertile ground of infections.

In several hospitals, people with symptoms of the above diseases have started lining up. Each day Batra Hospital receives four patients of typhoid, 10 of lower respiratory infections like pneumonia and bronchitis and 15 of diarrhoea, among others.

"The waterlogged areas become a bed of water-borne and food-borne diseases and poor sanitation adds to the woes. Among the total number of people visiting the OPD, nearly 200 are cases of diarrhoea. Children are the most susceptible to it," said Dr Sanjeev Bagai, the CEO of Batra Hospital.

"A child is more prone to infections, like few hours of diarrhoea, which may be cholera, may worsen the child's condition and even turn fatal. Though not many cases of cholera have been reported they are expected to rise as water recedes in the submerged areas. Those with diarrhoea and vomiting are advised to go to a doctor," said Dr R N Mishra, senior consultant, internal medicine in Max Hospital.

Both Max and Moolchand Hospital have also seen an increase in bacterial and waterborne infections.

According to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, the cases are expected to peak during the upcoming Commonwealth Games and with the cases already recording all-time high, the situation may spell a taxing time to the authorities.

Delhi in the last days has seen the record dengue figures, taking the cumulative count of confirmed cases to 2,728 today. "Breeding has aggravated and cases are going to peak during the Games. Floods and water accumulation are the main culprits. It has to be kept in mind that water collection over five days is dangerous," Dr V. K. Monga, the chairperson of the MCD health committee.

"Dengue is endemic, but there is no reason for alarm and people need not rush to hospitals in panic. Rather people should follow hygeinic practices. The concept is-clean living conditions, drink boiling water and hygeinic food, " Dr Batra.

More embarrassment as road caves in
Due to DJB pipe burst in Vikas Marg

New Delhi, September 24
Already under attack for missed deadlines and shoddy construction work related to Commonwealth Games preparations, Delhi Government today faced yet another embarrassment when a portion of an arterial road in East Delhi caved in today.

The portion of the road, measuring around 20 feet, on the busy Vikash Marg collapsed early this morning, triggering traffic snarls.

The road caved in after a Delhi Jal Board pipeline burst and the entire stretch was inundated.

Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit has directed the authorities to immediately repair the road.

Criticising the Delhi government for the incident, city BJP chief Vijendra Gupta said the road cave-in has once again "exposed" the sub-standard quality of the construction work in the city.

"Both Dikshit and Public works minister Raj Kumar Chouhan are responsible for the incident," he said.

PWD officials blamed incessant rains for the cave-in and said that repair work will be over by tonight.

According to the Delhi police, a portion of the road between Nirman Vihar and Shastri Vihar caved in around 7 am.

The traffic flow was blocked during the peak hours and commuters, particularly office-goers and school children, found it difficult to travel along the road.

Arun Jaitley, a resident and member of the Nirman Vihar Residents Welfare Association, said: "The water pipeline burst and created a lot of problem in the area. Traffic was disrupted for a brief period. This showcases the poor civic governance of the capital."

The incident came three days after collapse of an under-construction foot overbridge near the Jawaharlal Nehru stadium. — PTI, IANS

Bluelines off many roads till Oct 16

New Delhi, September 24
In the run-up to the Commonwealth Games, the Blueline buses, infamously known as killer buses, will vanish from many parts of Delhi from Sunday till October 16. "Blueline buses will stop plying in the areas under the New Municipal Corporation of Delhi (NDMC) from Sunday. Moreover, their movement would be restricted in the areas touching the Commonwealth Games venues too," said transport secretary-cum commissioner R.K. Verma.

Till the Games come to an end, of the total Blueline buses, around 1,500 will ply in rural areas while other 800 would ply only in the areas not under the jurisdiction of NDMC or near the Games venues.

According to Verma, in the absence of Blueline buses, around 6,500 DTC buses, including around 4,000 new ones and others slightly older, would suffice the needs of the commuters.

Further, during the Games, a new fleet of low-floor buses, including the green and air-conditioned ones, will ply around the Games venues to give a modern and comfortable look to public transport.

The transport commission in August decided to keep Blueline buses away from near the Games venues till the sports event ends to give a better look to the city.

"A decision was taken in this regard at a meeting of the transport department. The meet was attended by the transport minister, senior transport officials and Blueline bus operators. The buses will remain off road till October 16," a senior transport official had said.

According to an estimate, 1,824 Blueline buses plying on 281 routes would be taken off service.

Out of the total 6,500 DTC buses, 1,400 will cater to athletes, delegates and security personnel and another 1,200 will ply on special routes. About 10 per cent buses would be on stand-by for the convenience of the athletes, delegates and volunteers.

One of the most crucial projects of the Commonwealth Games, Barapulla elevated corridor connecting the Games Village with the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, was officially opened today. Around 240 DTC low-floor AC buses meant for the athletes and officials moved on the road today.

The buses started from the Games Village and took the elevated road from Ring Road just opposite Bala Sahib Gurdwara.

It runs elevated all along the Barapulla Nullah and crosses over Ring Road, railway tracks near Nizamuddin railway station, road near Barapulla bridge, Mathura Road and Lala Lajpat Rai Marg.

The elevated road will reduce the travelling time between the Village and the JN stadium from 45 minutes to 10 minutes. The road is proposed to be extended up to INA and Mayur Vihar.

CWG: Over 100 dogs caught from venues
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, September 24
With dogs finding ways to the beds meant for athletes at the Games Village, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has stepped up its drive to round up the canine population, especially from areas around the village.

Officials said the MCD has launched the drive in collaboration with an NGO Friendicoes SECA (Society for the Eradication of Cruelty to Animals), which works in Delhi and its environs. Over 100 dogs have been rounded up and they have been kept at an animal centre in Ghazipur. After the Games, they will be released in their habitation area.

The civic agency with the help of Friendicoes SECA has rounded up around 100 stray dogs from the Games Village and other Games venues, an official said today.

Some volunteers on vehicles were seen working in the village vicinity throughout the day to catch dogs.

An NGO official said the workers were doing it voluntarily as the "insensitive" government officials often adopt draconian and cruel ways to catch dogs.

"At times, they even poison dogs and often hurt them in trying to catch them. We are also not sure how they are kept, so we decided to step in and do it in an animal-friendly way," he said.

Two ambulances with six dog catchers are going around the venue to catch dogs. The MCD officials said they have also deployed teams around the Games venues.

Metro plans trains with 6 coaches
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, September 24
Delhi Metro is going on a major expansion drive. Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) will have 201 trains by the end of next year in place of its present strength of 129, a Metro spokesperson announced today.

However, the real expansion would be more than the statistical increase in number of trains suggests as many trains would have six coaches by the end of the next year.

The spokesperson said as many as 89 trains would have six coaches while 112 would continue to have four coaches. As of now, none of the trains has four coaches, except two being run as prototypes in depots so that the Metro be fully prepared to implement its plans in the following year.

"DMRC has placed the order for procuring extra coaches in the combination of Motor car and Trailer car, which will be coupled with the four coach trains to make them six coach trains," he said.

The extra coaches will start arriving from the end of this year and will be coupled with the existing train sets for conversion. The coupling requires about two to three days, he said, and then the trains would be tested for interface with the existing system like signaling, interchange and crossovers.

"Two trains have already been converted into six-coach prototype trains and they are under testing in two maintenance depots," he said.

The additional coaches would be big boost to the Metro's capacity for carrying passengers and a sic-coach train would be able to carry about 600 more passengers per train trip. A four-coach train has a carrying capacity ranging from 1200 to 1500 while the six coach train would carry between 1800 and 2100 passengers per train trip.

New Delhi, September 24
With the arrest of two persons, the crime branch of the Delhi police has claimed to have busted a visa racket wherein Indian nationals were sent to Italy by obtaining Schengen visas on forged documents.

According to the police, the accused have been identified as Gurdeep Singh (41) and Mukesh Luthra (34).

According to Neeraj Thakur, additional commissioner (crime), the two are involved in manpower trafficking to Italy and other European countries on the basis of Schengen visas obtained through fraudulent means.

About 57 passports, Rs 20,000 in cash, fake immigration stamps, RPO stamps (Jallandhar), 2 CPUs, one scanner/printer, two cars and a large quantity of forged and incriminating material have been recovered from their possession.

The arrest came after the police received information that a gang comprising Gurdeep Singh and Mukesh Luthra was running a fake visa racket and that they would gather at 11 am near Rajdoot Hotel, Jangpura, on September 20.

During interrogation, the two accused disclosed that they were obtained Schengen visas through Italian Embassy on the basis of fake documents prepared by them. They disclosed that these days they were also preparing fake sujourno and marriage certificates.

According to Thakur, the accused charged Rs 5-6 lakh from their customers and the money was distributed between them and their agents.

Members of this racket are spread all over India, mainly Punjab. They used to contact people interested in going to European countries on Schenegen visa.

"For getting a Schenegen visa, one needs to submit certain documents like income tax returns, bank statement, invitation offer, pan card, insurance polices etc. However, most of the customers of the gang belong to rural areas and they do not have these documents. So the gang used to prepare forged documents for them," said Thakur, adding that so far, the gang has sent more than 100 people to Schengen countries on forged documents.
