Threat of waterborne diseases looms
New Delhi, September 24 Areas like, Sonia Vihar, Usmanpur, Chilla Village, Majnu Ka Tila, Mayur Vihar, Burari and Geeta Colony are on the high radar as the water stagnating around these areas would leave a fertile ground of infections. In several hospitals, people with symptoms of the above diseases have started lining up. Each day Batra Hospital receives four patients of typhoid, 10 of lower respiratory infections like pneumonia and bronchitis and 15 of diarrhoea, among others. "The waterlogged areas become a bed of water-borne and food-borne diseases and poor sanitation adds to the woes. Among the total number of people visiting the OPD, nearly 200 are cases of diarrhoea. Children are the most susceptible to it," said Dr Sanjeev Bagai, the CEO of Batra Hospital. "A child is more prone to infections, like few hours of diarrhoea, which may be cholera, may worsen the child's condition and even turn fatal. Though not many cases of cholera have been reported they are expected to rise as water recedes in the submerged areas. Those with diarrhoea and vomiting are advised to go to a doctor," said Dr R N Mishra, senior consultant, internal medicine in Max Hospital. Both Max and Moolchand Hospital have also seen an increase in bacterial and waterborne infections. According to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, the cases are expected to peak during the upcoming Commonwealth Games and with the cases already recording all-time high, the situation may spell a taxing time to the authorities. Delhi in the last days has seen the record dengue figures, taking the cumulative count of confirmed cases to 2,728 today. "Breeding has aggravated and cases are going to peak during the Games. Floods and water accumulation are the main culprits. It has to be kept in mind that water collection over five days is dangerous," Dr V. K. Monga, the chairperson of the MCD health committee. "Dengue is endemic, but there is no reason for alarm and people need not rush to hospitals in panic. Rather people should follow hygeinic practices. The concept is-clean living conditions, drink boiling water and hygeinic food, " Dr

More embarrassment as road caves in
New Delhi, September 24 The portion of the road, measuring around 20 feet, on the busy Vikash Marg collapsed early this morning, triggering traffic snarls. The road caved in after a Delhi Jal Board pipeline burst and the entire stretch was inundated. Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit has directed the authorities to immediately repair the road. Criticising the Delhi government for the incident, city BJP chief Vijendra Gupta said the road cave-in has once again "exposed" the sub-standard quality of the construction work in the city. "Both Dikshit and Public works minister Raj Kumar Chouhan are responsible for the incident," he said. PWD officials blamed incessant rains for the cave-in and said that repair work will be over by tonight. According to the Delhi police, a portion of the road between Nirman Vihar and Shastri Vihar caved in around 7 am. The traffic flow was blocked during the peak hours and commuters, particularly office-goers and school children, found it difficult to travel along the road. Arun Jaitley, a resident and member of the Nirman Vihar Residents Welfare Association, said: "The water pipeline burst and created a lot of problem in the area. Traffic was disrupted for a brief period. This showcases the poor civic governance of the capital." The incident came three days after collapse of an under-construction foot overbridge near the Jawaharlal Nehru stadium. — PTI, IANS |
Bluelines off many roads till Oct 16
New Delhi, September 24 Till the Games come to an end, of the total Blueline buses, around 1,500 will ply in rural areas while other 800 would ply only in the areas not under the jurisdiction of NDMC or near the Games venues. According to Verma, in the absence of Blueline buses, around 6,500 DTC buses, including around 4,000 new ones and others slightly older, would suffice the needs of the commuters. Further, during the Games, a new fleet of low-floor buses, including the green and air-conditioned ones, will ply around the Games venues to give a modern and comfortable look to public transport. The transport commission in August decided to keep Blueline buses away from near the Games venues till the sports event ends to give a better look to the city. "A decision was taken in this regard at a meeting of the transport department. The meet was attended by the transport minister, senior transport officials and Blueline bus operators. The buses will remain off road till October 16," a senior transport official had said. According to an estimate, 1,824 Blueline buses plying on 281 routes would be taken off service. Out of the total 6,500 DTC buses, 1,400 will cater to athletes, delegates and security personnel and another 1,200 will ply on special routes. About 10 per cent buses would be on stand-by for the convenience of the athletes, delegates and volunteers. |

CWG: Over 100 dogs
caught from venues
New Delhi, September 24 Officials said the MCD has launched the drive in collaboration with an NGO Friendicoes SECA (Society for the Eradication of Cruelty to Animals), which works in Delhi and its environs. Over 100 dogs have been rounded up and they have been kept at an animal centre in Ghazipur. After the Games, they will be released in their habitation area. The civic agency with the help of Friendicoes SECA has rounded up around 100 stray dogs from the Games Village and other Games venues, an official said today. Some volunteers on vehicles were seen working in the village vicinity throughout the day to catch dogs. An NGO official said the workers were doing it voluntarily as the "insensitive" government officials often adopt draconian and cruel ways to catch dogs. "At times, they even poison dogs and often hurt them in trying to catch them. We are also not sure how they are kept, so we decided to step in and do it in an animal-friendly way," he said. Two ambulances with six dog catchers are going around the venue to catch dogs. The MCD officials said they have also deployed teams around the Games venues. |

The coupling requires about two to three days, he said, and then the trains would be tested for interface with the existing system like signaling, interchange and crossovers.
