GND varsity reschedules autumn break
: The Guru Nanak Dev University has changed the schedule of autumn break to be observed in its affiliated colleges in view of the Commonwealth Games, said Vice-Chancellor A.S. Brar today. He said as per new schedule, the colleges of arts, science and social sciences, would observe the autumn break from October 8 to 15, while in the education (BEd) colleges, the break would be observed from October 11 to 15.

Couple hurt in accident:
A local couple, riding a bike, was injured after being hit by a truck here on Tuesday. Manjinder Singh and his wife Inderjit Kaur, residents of Shukarpura here, were going to Amritsar when the incident happened. Their condition is stated to be serious. A police patrol party took the couple to the Civil Hospital, from where they were referred to Guru Nanak Dev Hospital, Amritsar. The truck driver fled from the spot.

Talent hunt at RIMT:
The inter-college talent hunt competition “Talaash-2010” was organised at RIMT here recently, in which 120 students took part. Students from the Regional Institute of Management and Technology, the Institute of Management and Computer Technology and the School of Management Studies participated in 12 events, including dance, creative writing, cartoon making, salad decoration, rangoli and cooking. The aim was to bring out hidden talents of students. Winners were awarded prizes and certificates.

Checkup camp
: The Guru Nanak Mission Medical and Educational Trust, Dhahan Kaleran, organised a two-day medical checkup camp to commemorate the death anniversary of Bishan Kaur, mother of Hardev Singh Kahma, vice-president of the trust. A team of doctors of Guru Nanak Mission Hospital, run by the trust, examined 435 patients suffering from various ailments and medicines were provided free of cost, informed president Amarjit Singh Kaler.

Cong leader’s house burgled
: The house of the general secretary of the Block Congress Committee, Lal Chand Lalli, was reportedly burgled at the Green Park locality here today. His sister Suman Lata, who has been residing in the house, was away when the burglars strike and decamped along with gold ornaments weighing 12 tolas, silver utensils weighing 500 gm and Rs 5,000. The police has registered a case.

School awarded
: Sri Guru Arjun Dev Government College has been awarded ‘B’ grade by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) for its good performance in different fields, Dr Gurnam Kaur Bedi , Principal of the college, disclosed this while talking to mediapersons here on Wednesday. The NAAC team had visited the college on March 25 and 26. A function was organised in the college on Wednesday in which cultural programme was presented.

Gang busted: A four-member gang of swindlers has been busted, which duped innocent youths of lakhs of rupees in the name of providing them recruitment in the Indian Air Force.

Wheat for APL families
: The government has allotted wheat under the Targeted Public Distribution System (TPDS) for its distribution to above poverty line (APL) families of the state. A spokesman for the Food and Supplies Department said wheat for APL families had been allotted to Ambala, Faridabad, Gurgaon, Hisar, Jhajjar, Karnal, Kurukshetra, Mewat, Narnaul, Panipat, Panchkula, Palwal, Rewari, Sonepat and Yamunanagar districts for its distribution to APL families at the scale of 15 kg per ration card at the rate of Rs 6.86 per kg for October 2010.

Mobile blood bank in Sirsa
: Sirsa will soon have a mobile blood bank. The mobile blood bank is being started in the district under the Backward Area Grant Fund (BRGF) Scheme, said Deputy Commissioner CG Rajini Kaanthan here recently. He said a fully air-conditioned mobile van equipped with all kinds of medical equipment had been purchased at a cost of Rs 38 lakh with facility of four beds, mini-laboratory for testing blood samples and facilities to check health of blood donors. Rajini said the van would be made functional with the cooperation of the civil hospital, Shiv Shakti Blood Bank and Sirsa Red Cross Society.
