‘All My Sons’ adjudged best play
Patiala, September 20 Dr Gurmohan Singh Walia graced the occasion as the chief guest. Eulogising the pioneering effort of the English Literary Society in taking such an innovative step in enacting plays in English, he emphasised its relevance in the global scenario. College principal, Dr Dharminder Singh Ubha welcomed the chief guest and other dignitaries. The play “All My Sons” bagged the title of the best enacted play. Parampal Singh of BA III and Jasmine Kaur of BA I got the award of best performers from the play. From the play “Lithuania”, Kulwinder Kaur of BA I and Jasmine Kaur of BCA I got the best actors award and from “The Proposal”, Manpreet Kaur of BA II and Sukhwinder Singh of BA II got the prize for their performance. |

Two hurt in accidents
Rajpura, September 20 While the truck met with an accident near Basantpura village on the Rajpura-Sirhind road and the biker, Tehal Singh, a resident of Pohlo Majra village fell off the road near Mehmoodpur village. He was on his way towards his village when his bike skidded and got injured. Police officials said that they would register cases against in this connection. |

MLA promises water supply within
a week
Bassi Pathana, September 20 He said the SDO (PSEB) had been directed to supply power to tubewells, which were constructed at the cost of Rs 25 lakh. He said water pumps had stopped working due to water shortage. He said submersible pumps would be installed there. He said he had directed the SDO, Sewerage Board, to prepare a rough estimate, so that new pumps could be be installed at the earliest. Sufficient funds would be made available for the purpose, he added. He said power and water supplies would be made available within a week. It has been one month, since residents of the town are without water. After the reports were published in these columns, the MLA swung into action. |

Two cars with same numbers: RC agent booked
Kharar, September 20 The agent has been booked on the complaint of an Alto owner, a retired BSF police inspector, who has alleged that the aforesaid agent got him a registration number similar to that of another Honda city car in Kharar. Accused Navpreet Singh alias Jhonny, works as a typist in the tehsil complex. On Saturday, Jaspreet Singh from Kharar told the police that he had seen an Alto car bearing the same number as that of his Honda city (PB27 C 0213). He came across the Alto when it met with an accident near Daun village. The police took both cars in its possession and verified the registration copies of both the cars. During the verification it was found that the Alto car had not been registered with the district registration authority and the number put on its plate was fake. The number was found registered in the name of Gulzar Singh in 2007. Owner of Alto car Surinder Singh told the police that he had bought the car from Khanpur and to get the number he contacted accused Jhonny who pocketed Rs 7,500 for the task. The police team today visited Jhonny’s village Dhangrali to arrest him. — TNS |

21-yr-old leopard dies
Chhat (Banur), September 20 Tellu was brought from Jammu and Kashmir around 10 years ago. Zoo field director Churchil Kumar said Tellu died of some ailment due to old age. She was suffering from some ailment for the past few days and was being treated by veterinary doctors of the zoo. With the death of Tellu, the zoo is left with seven leopards now. Meanwhile, the field director said the carcass of 11 missing baby ghariyals were recovered from the sand mound of critically endangered species of ghariyal. He also added that a forest guard has also been suspended in this regard for not informing the senior zoo authorities about the missing ghariyals. Saplings planted
Ambala, September 20 Students spread the message of preservation of ozone layer. They carried placards and raised slogans. Students planted saplings on the school premises. Pinjore, Kalka to be developed as tourist centres: Selja
Ambala, September 20 Talking to mediapersons Union Tourism Minister Selja said the Mahvir Park located in the middle of a lake spread in around 25 acre of land would be renovated and developed as an important tourism centre of the state. She said that Rs 2.25 crore would be spent on its renovation. The lake of the park will be given an attractive look and boating facility will also be provided, she added. She said similarly Subhash Park of Ambala Cantonment would also be renovated in an eye-catching manner. Her department had already chalked out a scheme for this park. She said around half a dozen parks located in Kalka, Yamunnagar and Pinjore would also be developed as a tourism centre. Replying a question she said a few other ambitious projects for the Ambala constituency were also in the pipeline and in the coming years, Ambala would figure on the tourism map of Haryana. Referring the bottling plant to be set up at Ambala Cantt by the Railway Department she said that she had met Railway Minister Mamta Benerjee in this regard. She said that all necessary formalities were being worked out and the project work would start soon. |

Chandigarh, September 20 The joint registrar had conducted the test identification parade (TIP) of the accused when the case was registered in 2006. While there are nine chargesheets in the case, the court recorded only the statement of the joint registrar in the rape case. The case has been adjourned to September 21 for further cross-examination. he joint registrar was the city magistrate in Srinagar when the case was registered. He had conducted the identification parade of the six accused thrice. During cross-examination, the defence counsel asked him whether he (Joint Registrar) had taken the permission of the accused to conduct the identification parade to which he replied that he had the orders of the High Court. On if the victim, who was supposed to identify the accused, had collapsed during the parade, he replied that she had fallen down but then got up. She had not collapsed, he asserted. According to the prosecution, the joint registrar had conducted the identification parade of Maharajudin Malik, a government official, KC Pandhi, DIG with the Border Security Force (BSF), Shahbir Ahmad Langoo, Shahbir Ahmad Lava, Mohammad Ashraf Mir, DSP and Masood Ahmad on June 21, 2006. The scandal, involving 46 to 100 girls and scores of police officers in the rank of SPolice and DSP, had hit the headlines in 2006. |

Gas agency penalised Rs 2,000
Chandigarh, September 20 Holding the gas service provider guilty, the forum held: “It is a clear case of a harassed consumer, who has suffered because of the late delivery of gas cylinder. She definitely needs to be compensated by the service provider for the harassment suffered by her due to their deficient act and unfair trade practice.” The complainant, Rajeshwari Tripathi, a resident of Police Lines, Sector 26, had alleged that she had booked a gas cylinder with the service provider on April 28. The complainant waited in vain for the cylinder and in spite of several requests for delivery of the cylinder, the service provider failed to send it to the complainant. The forum served a notice on the gas service provider but the latter failed to appear before the forum. Thus ex parte proceedings were initiated. |

Gang of criminals busted, six arrested
Mohali, September 20 Only a few days ago, members of the gang had committed a robbery of Rs 73,000 at Supreme Poultry Farm, Ranimajra village, Lalru. The gang had identified its targets on the basis of various inputs. Most of the gang members had organised themselves while serving terms in different cases in jail. Mohali SSP GPS Bhullar said the CIA wing of the police had succeeded in nabbing the gang. On September 19, the police got a tip-off that some youngsters, standing near the Best prize super market, were planning to commit crime and were equipped with deadly weapons. On being rounded up, the police recovered a .315 bore country-made pistol, three live cartridges, three knives, an iron rod and two motor cycles, bearing fake registration numbers. The suspects have been identified as Gurbachan Singh (29), Varinder Pal (24), alias Ajay, Harjinder Singh (21), alias Biloo, Manjit Singh (34) Kala, Kuldeep Singh (21), Jagdeep Singh (22), alias Johny. One of recovered motor cycles was snatched by Gurbachan Singh a few days back from Ghanaur. In 2008, Gurbachan Singh, along with Kuldeep Singh, had robbed a hardware shop dealer in Bassi Pathana of Rs 9,500. Two months ago, Gurbachan Singh, Varinder Pal and another Morinda resident, who has gone abroad, had tried to snatch money from a person dealing in money exchange, but they failed in it. Varinder Pal, who was working as an accountant with DD International Iron Firm, had allegedly hatched a plan with Gurbachan Singh and Harjinder Singh Billa to kidnap Gappu, son of the owner of M/s R.P. Multimetal company from GCL Club Mandi Gobindgarh. But they could not carry out the plan. Jagdeep Singh, alias Johny, had already served a jail term for committing robberies on liquor vends at Amloh and Khamano. |

Four held for burglary
Panchkula, September 20 The police said the four accused had decamped with an electric power motor, one “self” of a generator and a pump worth Rs 30,000 from the premises of Sonia Overseas Pvt Ltd in Industrial Area, Phase I, a few days ago. The accused had been identified as Nanak Ram, alias Vicky, r/o district Rampur UP, presently residing in Ambedkar Colony Dhokli near Zirakpur, Mahinder Singh and Virpal, alias Nanu, and Prempal, all residents of Ambedkar Colony. The police said a case under Section 457 and 380 of the IPC had been registered against the four accused at the Sector 20 police station. The accused were produced in court today, which remanded them to police custody for a day. |
