Bathinda
Chaos as train route changed
: The last minute decision by the railway to divert the trains — the Punjab Mail (2138) and the Udhayn Abha Toofan Mail (3008) on Tuesday night — left hundreds of passengers in the lurch at Bathinda station. The trains were diverted following reports of violence in Haryana. Sources said the trains were diverted via Ambala. — TNS

Two IAS officers transferred
: The Punjab government today transferred two IAS officers and six PCS officers with immediate effect. Pradeep Kumar becomes ADC (development), Ludhiana; Supreet Singh Gulati will be the new SDM, Nakodar; Praneet, ADC (development), Amritsar has been given additional charge of Deputy Director, Urban Local Bodies, Amritsar; MP Arora is the new Additional Secretary, Welfare of SCs and BCs, Punjab.

Pong Dam gates opened for first time
: The spillway gates of the Pong Dam at Talwara were opened for the first time during this monsoon season today. According to officials of the control room of the BBMB, 21,800 cusecs of water had been released in the Beas whereas 11,500 cusecs in the Mukerian hydel channel. Sources said the inflow of the Pong Dam reservoir had recorded 40,807 cusecs whereas its level was 1,394.042 feet at 4 pm. The situation around the Beas and the Mukerian hydel channel was pretty much under control. Presently there was no fear of floods in the area. However, Gujjars having their deras along the banks of the river had already been shifted to safer places.

Two killed in mishaps: Two persons were killed since last night in separate road accidents in the district. According to police sources, motorcyclist Harpal Singh, son of Lakhbir Singh of Salren, succumbed to his injuries at the DMC, Ludhiana, last night. Harpal Singh was seriously wounded when his motorcycle rammed into an oil tanker (PB-10CL-0174) at Banjerbagh last night. He was admitted in the local Civil Hospital from where he was referred to the DMC, Ludhiana. Tanker driver Minto, son of Pritam Singh of Jwali (Himachal Pradesh), fled from the scene after the accident. The Sadar police has booked Minto under relevant sections of the IPC in this connection. In another accident, a bus (PB-07S-6965) crushed Sarwan Singh of Nangali Jalalpur while he was standing before the court complex at Dasuya last night. The police has registered a case against Balwinder Singh, driver of the bus, in this connection.

Arundhati Roy to visit city on Friday
: Booker prize winner Arundhati Roy will address a state-level convention of the Operation Green Hunt Virodhi Jamhuri Front, Punjab at Desh Bhagat Yaadgar Hall here on September 17. In a press note issued here today, state committee member of the front Amolak Singh stated it had been decided at a meeting held under the presidentship of front convener Gursharan Singh to launch a campaign to ensure the presence of leading intellectuals in the convention.

Medical camp
: Sadhu Singh and Harjit Singh, UK-based NRI brothers, in collaboration with Guru Nanak Charitable Trust, Mullanpur, and the Parbandhak Committee of Gurdwara Shaheed Singh Garuna Sahib of Punnu Mazara village organised a free medical check-up camp for disabled persons on Sunday. A team of doctors examined 550 patients. As many as 65 tricycles, 120 hearing aids and artificial limbs were given to physically handicapped persons.

Narcotic powder seized
: The police seized 750 gm of narcotic powder from Rajinder Mehra Housing Board Colony during a search at a naka laid by CIA in charge Kulwinder Singh, near Kiran auditorium, on the Pathankot-Amritsar road here today. A case under NDPS Act has been registered against him.

Connect launches WiFi
: After BSNL, Reliance and Airtel, Connect has introduced WIFI broadband service, which was launched here today. Company Deputy General Manager Preet Mohinder Singh and Business Head Rajiv Sodhi launched the service.

7 Kamla Nehru girls get into IBM Daksh: Seven students of Kamla Nehru College for Women, Phagwara, were selected by IBM Daksh, an MNC, during a campus placement drive, organised by the career guidance and placement cell of the college. The students of BCA, BSc (Computer Science), MSc (IT), BSc (Economics), MCom and BCom were interviewed. Selected students were Pravneet Kaur, Preeti Sharma, Jaspreet Kaur, Nancy Arora, Jasmeet, Prachi and Himani.

New BJP team: Phagwara BJP president Arun Khosla reconstituted the new team of the party’s district unit here on Sunday. The new office-bearers are councillor Dev Sharma (general secretary), Ashwini Tiwari, Raj Pal Ghai, Sudama Joshi, Surinder Singh, Bantu Walia (vice-presidents); Surinder Chopra, Rakesh Ohri, Nirmala Thakur, Ved Parkash Taneja and Harpreet Kaur (secretaries); Sunil Madan (press secretary), Vivek Chadha (joint press secretary) and Sudesh Sharma (office secretary).

School timings to change from tomorrow
: Keeping the winter timings in mind, District Education Officer Geeta Nautiyal has ordered to change school (primary to intermediate) timings from September 16. The new timing will be from 10 am to 4 pm. She also informed that all schools would soon begin the process of attendance verification too.
