Workshop on radio programming concludes
Patiala, September 11 Dr Jaspal said, “Radio has become an integral part of visual and audio-visual media.” He said radio enjoyed the same sanctity, credibility and reliability as it did decades ago before the advent of television. CAMS director Dr Gurmeet Singh Maan said the workshop aimed at apprising students of programming and technical aspects of radio broadcasting. Students were asked to prepare a 15-minute programme under the guidance of Amarjit Waraich, station head of All-India Radio (AIR), Patiala. This programme, along with a 10-second promo on Punjabi University’s Kitab Ghar, was aired on September9 in Patiala. |

‘Shri Parshuram chair to be set up at Pbi varsity’
Mandi Gobindgarh, September 11 He was here to attend a function of Shri Brahman Sabha, Punjab. He said at Khati village, near Phagwara, where Parshuram meditated, government was spending Rs 1.10 crore for development. “Roads of Khati will be laid and a special commemorative gate will be dedicated to Parshuram,” he said while announcing a grant of Rs 3-lakh for the gate. He also announced Rs 5 lakh-grant for Shri Parshuram Dharamshala at Mandi Gobindgarh. Municipal council officials were directed to start work on the commemorative gate. Later, while talking to mediapersons, he said farmers could opt to take payment directly from the government or from the commission agents. Talking about the demands of the ETT teachers, Badal said government was committed to fulfill their demands. “The agitating teachers should understand that government is sensitive to their demands and must co-operate,” he added. |

Exploitation of labourers alleged
Ropar, September 11 While addressing the workers’ union, he told them to fight for their rights and inaugurated the office of contract driver union, which was recently registered. As many as 400 working drivers had got themselves registered with the newly formed union. Members of the union also took out a rally from grain market to the newly formed union office. Purshottam Das, president of the Swaraj Mazda Workers’ Union, Jaswant Singh Saini, general secretary, and others were also present. He pointed out that private company officials were not giving health benefits to its employees. They must be given all health profits just like government employees. He condemned Punjab government for not conducting meetings with labour board. “Employers have exploited labourers at every level,” he said. He also demanded that the government must increase the rate of interest of provident fund of employees by 12 per cent. |

Patiala, September 11 Lalwa said strict action would be initiated in case any officer failed to discharge his/her duty diligently with respect to the process of issuing Smart Cards. Meanwhile, giving details about the benefits of Smart Card, Patiala civil surgeon Dr Sham Lal Mahajan said under the Smart Card, as many as 750 different diseases are covered and card holders can undertake treatment in either of the 10 government hospitals and 18 private hospitals of Patiala district. |

Cattle Menace Admn to act tough
Patiala, September 11 Grewal has issued instructions to these departments that they would be responsible for stray cattle menace in the areas under their jurisdiction. During a meeting, held with the representatives of the PSPCA and other administrative authorities, the matter was discussed at length. “We have briefed Grewal about the increasing menace of stray animals, particularly cattle and dogs in the city, due to which road mishaps are also on the rise,” PSPCA president Ravee Singh Ahluwalia told Divisional Commissioner. Grewal directed municipal officials to devise some mechanism to catch stray cattle and leave them at various cattle houses in the city. When Grewal instructed Patiala MC authorities to check the illegal slaughtering of animals in the city, the senior civic officials told him that the power to issue license to slaughter houses had been vested with the office of the civil surgeon. Subsequently, Grewal directed Patiala civil surgeon Dr Sham Lal Mahajan to prepare a report about the slaughter houses operating in Patiala. “The report must mention details about action taken against the slaughter houses, which are indulging in illegal slaughtering of animals,” Grewal told The Tribune, while adding that strict action would be taken to curb illegal slaughtering of animals. Divisional Commissioner also directed Patiala MC to make a rescue-cum-rehabilitation centre for stray dogs, where they would be kept after sterilisation. It was also decided that the PSPCA would assist the Patiala MC in conducting the drive for sterilisation of stray dogs in the city. After the meeting, Municipal Commissioner Manjit Singh Narang said they would set up a shelter house to accommodate 20 dogs. Instructing the PWD authorities to initiate steps to beautify the area, Grewal said, “It has been brought to my knowledge that taxi operators have converted area under the bus stand flyover into parking lot and even the private bus operators have started using the land for parking of buses,” he said, while adding that PWD officials would be taking steps to ensure that there were no encroachments. |

Ambala, September 11 The meeting was attended by office-bearers of managing committees of Tulsi College of Education, Sh Sardari Lal College of Education, Surya College of Education, Lord Kishna College of Education, Mata Shanti Devi College of Education, Maa Bala Sundri College of Education and Birkha Ram College of Education. Ajay Chahar said he held a meeting with Vice-Chancellor of Kurukshetra University DDS Sandhu and it was decided that the date of online submission of BEd forms would be extended from September 7 to 17. He said the VC had agreed to refund admission fee to colleges within five days. Ajay Chahar said a committee would be constituted to select professors, readers and lecturers for the Education of BEd Colleges. |
PCS officer sent to judicial custody
Mohali, September 11 Turning down the prosecution’s request for further custodial interrogation of the accused for two days, the court yesterday ordered to lodge the 1995-batch PCS officer, who was posted as joint secretary, department of welfare of SC/BCs, Punjab, at the Patiala Central Jail till September 24. The vigilance had stated that they needed to interrogate the bureaucrat further to ascertain his alleged disproportionate assets accumulated through black money and recover unaccounted money, if any, from his bank lockers and house. |

Couple dupes woman of jewellery, cash
Panchkula, September 11 The victim, Jinder Mohini, in her complaint to the police said she was on her way to the market near her house to purchase curd when a middle-aged couple stopped her. She said the accused woman asked her if she was facing some problem. When Mohini told the woman about her daughter’s pregnancy the accused claimed that there was nothing to worry as the man accompanying her was a great saint who could solve her problem immediately. After this the two accused took her to a nearby park and asked her to put the cash on the newspaper spread on the ground. The accused folded the newspaper and asked her to place all gold jewellery she was wearing. The accused then completely folded the newspaper like a ball and placed it in Mohini’s dupatta and told her to open the same at her house. When Mohini reached half way to her house she doubted the intentions of the couple. She opened the dupatta and found the cash and jewellery missing. When she turned back the accused had fled from the spot. She immediately went to her house and informed her husband who further reported the matter to the police. Victim’s husband Sohan Lal said his daughter and son-in-law had come from Meerut. He said the incident has shocked everyone in the house and further claimed that his daughter was to be admitted to the hospital, which had been postponed till tomorrow. |

Zirakpur, September 11 The accused has been identified as Kalicharan. In his complaint, father of the girl Naseem Khan, alleged that Kalicharan, who works as a painter in Zirakpur, abducted his 17-year-old daughter on the pretext of marrying her. The accused is at large. A case has been registered. |

Paralympic National Meet
Panchkula, September 11 Mahesh Nehra of Rajastahan secured the second position clocking 5.13 minutes, while Raj Kumar of Haryana bagged the third position by completing the race in 5.17 minutes. In the 1,500m (men T-13) event, Ramkaran Singh of Delhi won a gold medal, while Haryana’s Rajesh and Raj Kumar bagged the second and third positions, respectively. Similarly in the men T-12 event, Amar Singh of Delhi bagged the first position, while Vivek Monga of Punjab and Tejinder Pal of Delhi scored the first and second positions, respectively. Long jump events (junior boys F-11) also saw a close contest between Kamal Kumar and Yogesh Kumar (both of Delhi) as they jumped to a distance of 4.11m. Tarzan Singh of Chattisgarh bagged the second position by covering a distance of 3.18m. In long jump (men F-46), Jagseer Singh of Rajasthan secured the first position, while Mahabir of Punjab and Amit of Haryana got the second and third positions, respectively. Delhi’s Prakash Chaudhary bagged a gold medal in long jump in the sub-junior (F-11) boys category, while Akbar Ansari of Delhi and Chattisgarh’s Bale Rao bagged a silver and a bronze medal, respectively. In senior woman (F-46), Jyoti of Haryana bagged the first position, while Maharashtra’s Jyoti Jadhav and Haryana’s Reena got the second and third positions, respectively. Bindra XI muster 256 runs
Mohali, September 11 After winning the toss, Bindra XI elected to bat first and scored 256 runs for the loss of eight wickets in 75.4 runs overs. Bindra XI lost three wickets for just 26 runs on board. Vishvas Bhalla 60 ( 4x5) and R Sodhi 91 not out ( 4x11) and ( 6x1) were the main scorers for their team. The duo scored 106 runs for the fifth wicket. At the end of first day’s play, Sodhi remained unbeaten on 91 runs and Yogesh Kumar on 44 runs. For MP Pandove XI, off-spinner Gunjot Singh and medium pacer Baltej Singh were the main wicket takers as they scalped four and three wickets, respectively. In the second match between NS Sidhu XI and Chaman Lal Malhotra XI played at Sector 26 in Chandigarh, Munish Bhatia’s fine knock of 88 helped Sidhu XI pile up 284 runs on the first day of the match. NS Sidhu XI won the toss and elected to bat first and they were all out for 284 runs in 78.3 overs. Munish Bhatia 88 (4X 9), Amit Parshar 52 (4X6) were the main contributors for their team. Bharat Loomba 28 and Amarinder Brar 23 runs supported them. For Chaman Lal Malhotra XI, medium pacer Navdeep Singh and spinner Rahul Singla took three wickets each giving away 45 and 91 runs, respectively. In reply, Chaman Lal Malhotra XI started their innings on a shaky note and they had put up only 12 on the board losing two wickets in eight overs. 3,000 for Haryana schools meet
Ambala, September 11 According to sources, about 3,000 players from various schools across the state will take part in gymnastics, handball and kabaddi during the four-day tournament. While addressing the gathering, Sameer Pal Srow said Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda had already announced for setting up of a state sports fund to promote sports and sportspersons and enhanced the amount of cash awards being given to medal winners. Talking about the steps taken by the government to promote sports in the state, the Chief Minister enhance the amount of cash awards given to winners, the gold medal winners of the Commonwealth Games would get Rs 15 lakh, the silver medal winners would get Rs 10 lakh and the bronze medal winners would get Rs 5 lakh. The Deputy Commissioner said the players should take a pledge to play with the sportsman spirit and said every person, working in any field of life, should make a determination to serve the country honestly. |
Top players for JP Atray meet
Chandigarh, September 11 "With the presence of these top class players, along with other players, the cricket fans will surely have a top class cricket to watch during the 10-day tournament," said Vivek Atray, convener of the tournament. A total of 16 leading teams across India would vie for top honours. "We have selected six venues- Tau Devi Lal Cricket Stadium, Sector 3, Panchkula, DAV School, Sector 8, Chandigarh, LIC Cricket Academy, GMHS, Sector 26, Chandigarh, St John School, Sector 26, Chandigarh, and Dhruv Pandove Cricket Stadium, Patiala, to hold a total of 47 matches, including the final match," said organiser Susheel Kapoor. According to sources, the tournament, which is being considered as lung opener of the domestic cricket season here, would be played under the auspices of Punjab Cricket Association and is recognised by the BCCI. The tournament will be played under the ICC rules of One Day Cricket. All the matches will be of 50 overs each innings. PCA panel umpires and scorers will be detailed for the matches. SG Test Cricket balls will be used. The winners will get a cash prize of Rs 1.75 lakh, along with winners trophy, while runners up will get a cash prize of Rs 70,000 with a trophy. The two losing semifinalists will get a cash prize of Rs 20,000. The teams have been divided in four pools and top team from each pool will qualify for the semifinal. Reliance - I winners of last year, along with BSNL, BPCL and PCC are in Pool-A, last year's runners-up Indian Oil Corporation, All-India FCI, Indian Railways and India Cements are placed in Pool - B, All-India Electricity Board, Indian Income Tax, Bishnoi Cricket Club and ONGC Delhi are in Pool-C, while Pool D consists PCA Colts, DY Patil Academy Mumbai, LIC Cricket Club, Chandigarh, and Air India Delhi. This year India Cement Chennai, Bishnoi Cricket Club and DY Patil Academy Mumbai are new entrants. The inaugural ceremony of the tournament will be held at the Cricket Stadium, Sector 16, on September 15 with a match between All-India Electricity Board and Indian Income Tax, Pune. The final of the tournament will be held at Tau Devilal Stadium, Sector 3, Panchkula, on September 24. |

Chandigarh, September 11 Six teams, ITBP Headquarters, Special Frontier, Northwest Frontier, Northern Frontier, Eastern Frontier and Logistics and Communication Zone participated in the competition. Players from Leh, Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Assam, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Punjab participated in the competition. Dr Sonia lifted the winner’s shield.
