Clubs for overall development of students
Patiala, September 8 The objective of the MBA Clubs is to provide the students an opportunity for the overall development and explore their inner ability. Prof Jasleen Kaur, head, department of management and commerce, informed that four clubs are Green Mechanics (The Environment Club), Nurture (The Activities Club), Endeavour (The Social Club) and Udaan (The Magazine Club). The chief guest while congratulating the Khalsa College principal, Dr Dharminder Singh Ubha, and MBA faculty shared his views that with the inauguration of the MBA Clubs, Khalsa College has added another feather in its cap. He said such an initiative marked the progressive vision of the college. Dr Sushil Mittal, associate professor, Govt Medical College, Patiala, was the guest of honour. He said in order to be successful, initiative and exposure played a significant role. Khalsa College principal while welcoming the guests, expressed his views that the aim of the college is the holistic development of the students by enlightening and enriching their minds and to train them as perfect specimens of excellence in all spheres of life by inculcating in them vocational skills, confidence, adaptability and charisma. |

Conference in US
Ropar: Three students of Sahibzada Ajit Singh Academy attended global conference on environment in the US. The students included Ravinder Kaur Khroud from Class XII, Kirandeep Kaur from Class XI and Jatinderpal Singh from Class XI. Director of the institute Sukhjinder Singh said these students had gone to the US to attend 11 day-programme.

Workshop on kathak ends
Patiala, September 8 The workshop was conducted by Guru Harish Gangani of the Jaipur gharana, which ended with the performances by students of BA (hons) and MA of the dance department. While presiding over the function, Vice-Chancellor, Dr Jaspal Singh said the rich cultural heritage of the Indian classical dances was not getting its due recognition in Punjab. He asked faculty members to undertake research projects in addition to teaching to carry forward this tradition of our country. Dr Daisy Walia, head of the department of dance, disclosed that a total of 48 students participated in the workshop. |

Female jaguar dies at Chhatbir Zoo
Chhat (Banur), September 8 As per the zoo field director Churchil Kumar, Sheenu, an exotic female carnivore, was found dead in her enclosure around 10.30 am. She was healthy and had no history of any disease or illness. She was seven years old and was brought from Delhi zoo in July 2007. She was kept in an enclosure with a The field director pointed out that preliminary reports suggest that the animal died of respiratory problem. A panel of three doctors conducted the postmortem of jaguar and exact reason behind the death would be ascertained later. Now, the zoo has only one male jaguar left. Recently a spate of animal deaths was reported in the zoo. |
Suicide at Church
Chandigarh, September 8 Seeking bail, Mercy had mentioned in the application that she had been made a scapegoat in this case. On July 24, Maya, a domestic help at Don Bosco Navjeevan Church, Sector 24, Chandigarh, was found hanging from a ceiling fan. While police registered a case for abetment to suicide against Mercy, niece of Father Sebastian of the church, kin of the deceased had alleged that Maya was murdered after Mercy learnt that her son, Anup, had proposed Maya for marriage. —

Two policemen acquitted
Chandigarh, September 8 SI Baljit Singh was the in charge of the Mauli Jagran police post when he was arrested by the CBI sleuths on August 21, 2007. According to the prosecution, the two policemen had threatened to implicate Lakhwinder Singh of Behlana in a case under the Narcotics Act in case he failed to meet their demand. The raiding team had recovered two bags of poppy husk, which the accused policemen had threatened to plant on the complainant and had demanded a bribe of Rs 20,000. |

Remove structures for judges’ houses: HC
Chandigarh, September 8 The directions by Justice Permod Kohli came with a warning. Justice Kohli asserted that in case of non-compliance, the chief engineer, public works department (bridges and roads), would appear in person before the court and explain why contempt of court proceedings be not initiated against him. The case will now come up for hearing on September 21. The high court was earlier informed that the land allotted and earmarked for the construction of judges’ houses was being used by the state of Haryana. Chandigarh’s senior standing counsel Sanjay Kaushal had asserted the land at no stage was allotted to the state of Haryana. |

Minor gangraped
Mohali, September 8 According to the police, the girl had stated that she had come to Phase V in the town with her mother on September 5 who worked as a domestic help in some houses. When her mother had gone to a gurdwara in the area to have tea, three boys came on a motorcycle and took her away on the pretext of giving her work. At night they allegedly took her to a park where they raped her one by one. Later they left her in the park and went away. She said when she was going to her house she met another man who took her to a room in Mohali village and allegedly raped her. Soon after another person entered the room and forcibly abused her sexually. She told the police that she could recognise all five persons if they were produced before her. According to another report, the girl was seen in a state of shock by a patrolling party in Phase I. After much persuasion the girl was able to give her address to the cops. Her parents were then called by the police. It is alleged that the girl was not able to give the exact location of the place where she was raped. The family of the girl hails from Bihar. A medical examination of the girl revealed that she had been raped. |

Three arrested on robbery charge
Mohali, September 8 The three persons had entered the house of Vishal Sharma in Sector 70 on August 27 on the pretext of having water. They allegedly threatened the kids at home with a rod and decamped with gold jewellery, a camera, wrist watches and other expensive items. As the wife of Vishal Sharma returned home around the same time, the three fled in a hurry and left behind an Activa scooter. SSP Gurpreet Singh Bhullar told mediapersons at a press conference here today that the arrested persons were Narinder Kumar, a resident of Chandigarh, Natish, alias Munna, a resident of Burail village, and Manoj Sharma, alias Nannu, who lived in Santemajra Colony, Kharar. Theft cases had been registered against all three persons earlier as well. He said Manoj Sharma had confessed that the scooter used in the crime was stolen by him from Kharar in July and a fake number plate had been put on it. During interrogation the police got to know that the arrested persons came to know each other while undergoing imprisonment in Burail jail in Chandigarh in different cases. After coming out of the jail they planned to commit the crime. They wanted to target a house which would be found locked, but when they saw small children in one house they struck presuming that no elder person must be at home at that time. All three have been booked under Sections 382, 506 and 34 of the IPC. |

When he returned from Mohali, he found that the lock of his bedroom was broken and Rs 9 lakh were missing. He alleged that the accused had run away with his money. Administrator’s Cup
Chandigarh, September 8 The IFA got the better of Gorkha Training Centre (GTC), Shillong, by narrow margin of 1-0, whereas Mohun Bagan thrashed its rival Football Academy, Mahilpur, 5-0 to book berth in the final. In the first semifinal match played at the Sector 42 Sports Complex, both the teams, the IFA and the GTC, displayed top-class game. However, both the teams failed to score. The Gorkhas squandered a clear chance that came their way in the seventh minute of the match. Striker Susil Metei kicked away from the goal post when IFA goalkeeper was not around. The match was extended to extra time. It was Lob Mondal of the IFA who produced the winning goal in the 10th minute of the extra time by sending the ball in the goal post through header after intercepting a cross by Mithun Oraon from the right flank. In the second semifinal match, Mohun Bagan put up a brilliant show to outplay Football Academy, Mahilpur, 5-0. T Borish Singh drew the first blood for the team in the 40th minute. The scoreboard read 1-0 at the half time. Boosted by the lead, the team pumped in four more goals in the second half. Sonu Kumar doubled the lead in the 52nd minute while T Borish Singh extended it to 3-0 in the 65th minute. The next two goals came through Sanjay Halder and Sonu in the 78th minute. The final will be played at the Sector 17 Football Stadium at 4 pm. |
Bindra XI emerge winner
Chandigarh, September 8 The fourth day play of the match between Bindra XI and NS Sidhu XI could not take place at the LIC Cricket Ground, Sector 26, here due to heavy rains in the morning. The Bindra XI team, which took lead of 64 runs in their first innings, in which the team had put on 287 runs replying to Sidhus’ first innings total of 223. At the end of the third day, Sidhu XI were on 149 for two, while the fourth day play could not take off today. In the second round match, Chaman Lal Malhotra XI will take on Navjot Singh Sidhu XI on September 11 at the same venue. |
Kabaddi meet from Sept 23
Panchkula, September 8 Stating this to the media here today, Gian Chand Gupta, chairman SPS, said the tournament was being organised to wean away the rural youth, who were indulged in drug abuse and other immoral activities. Gupta also announced that the winning team would be given Rs 21,000, while the runner-up team would get Rs 11,000. He said the village panchayats in the district had been authorised to select the team and the village panchayat would also be awarded Rs 11,000. |
Kits given to budding cricketers
Chandigarh, September 8 As many as 25 local budding cricketers, who belong to poor families, have been honing their skills under the supervision of former Indian cricketer Dinesh Mongia. Talking on the occasion, Mongia said these budding cricketers were a talented lot. “The boys are working hard. Within five-six months, my team would be ready to participate in the local-level tournaments. I am preparing a programme for them to give them adequate exposure in the game,” said Mongia. Mongia, who voluntarily came forward to impart training to the poor cricketers free of cost, said the administration had been giving all kind of help in grooming the players. |
Making his mark on world track
Chandigarh, September 8 Last year, he got a chance to represent the country at ISF Doha Gymnasiade held at the state of Qatar, where athletes of over 40 countries had participated. He was among 12 athletes, who were selected from the country for the event. Though he had finished at the 10th position, the rich experience he had gained from the international outing, would go a long way in shaping his sports career, he felt. Avinash favourite track race is 400m and 200m. Last year, he had clocked 50.28 seconds to win the silver and 22.74 seconds in 200m races during the 54th National School Games at Ernakulam (Kerala). He improved the timing in Doha Gymnasiade, where he took 49.09 seconds to complete the track race. “At Doha, I came to know that how much competition is there in the game. So, now I am working hard to achieve my immediate target of 48 seconds to complete the 400m track,” said Avinash. “After taking on the game in 2004, I got a chance to participate in the Junior National Athletics Championship the very next year. Though I could not get any medal, participation in the nationals in one year was a big morale booster,” said Avinash. Apart from sports, Avinash is also pursuing his studies in the non-medical stream and is a student of class XII at DAV Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 15. His coach Iqbal Singh is all praise for his disciple. “Avinash is a talented athlete. He has the abilities to do well in the game. At this stage, he really needs to work hard if he has to shine his name at the international level,” said Iqbal Singh. “I want to shine the name of my country like my ideal Jamaican sprinter Osain Bolt,” said the teenager with a twinkle in his eyes. |
Punjab Premier League
Patiala, September 8 Despite heavy rainfall in the morning, a large number of budding cricketers from different parts of Punjab turned up for the trials. Giving information about this league, company director Kawaljit Singh Bagga said the first tournament would be held in October, which would see teams of seven major cities of Punjab, namely Ludhiana, Patiala, Jalandhar, Amritsar, Bathinda, Chandigarh and Mohali, in action. While the players will be selected in the age group of 14-30 years, one more team will represent NRIs, making a total of eight teams participating in the tournament. He said the main motive of the tournament was to give exposure to the budding cricketers. Bagga informed that the result of the trials would be announced on Friday on the official website of the Punjab Premier League. |
City girl takes five-stroke lead
Chandigarh, September 8 The tall city girl fired a birdie on the fourth and conceded bogeys on the third and fifth to be one over 36 at the turn. She began back nine with three consecutive bogeys and another on the 14th. But birdies on the 15th and 17th saw her finish the day at three over 73. But Sharmila seemed out of form today. This Bangalore girl just could not get into her game as she triple bogeyed the 11th and conceded a double bogey on the sixth to finish a distant second at eight over par 78 after the first round. Also in the tied second slot is Nalini Singh Siwach. Another city girl Preetinder Kaur played a poor 16 over 86 card to be placed seventh on the first day. Saaniya Sharma’s short golfing career has been plagued by an ankle injury and surgery, which kept her out of action for most of the 2008-09 season. But she came back with a thumping triumph in the last tournament of the season. Daughter of an Army officer, Saaniya was second in the money list in the ladies category of the 2007-08 season. Junior golf camp from Oct 2
Chandigarh, September 8 The basic camp to be held in the age group of 6 to 17 years will be conducted by Manjit Kochar, director (overseas) of the Junior Golf Development Programme, Indo Canadian Golf Association, and will be open to members and non-members of the Chandigarh Golf Club. The junior trainees will be taught the basic fundamentals of the game, including chipping, putting, long and short irons, golf etiquettes and basic rules of the game, as per the ICGA guidelines. All participants will be given golf trophies and certificates by the ICGA on the completion of the camp. Golf sets, caddy money, range balls, etc., will be provided free to all trainees while maintaining a 4:1 student-teacher ratio by the ICGA, Canada.
