Dambulla, August 28 The hosts first amassed an imposing total of 299 for eight largely built around Dilshan's (110) eighth ODI century and then shot out the visitors for 225 in 46.5 overs in a rather lop-sided floodlit contest. The Indians paid the price for a sloppy bowling display which allowed the hosts to put up a big total on the board on what appeared to be a good batting track at Dambulla. It turned out to be Dhoni's first ODI series defeat on Sri Lankan soil, as the hosts had lost to India in four finals in the past two years at home. While Dilshan, who notched up his maiden century on Sri Lankan soil, played a pivotal role in his team's victory, captain Kumar Sangakkara (71) and Mahela Jayawardene (39) chipped in with useful contributions. Chasing a stiff target of 300 for win, only Dhoni could provide some resistance with a gritty 87 while a few other batsmen like Virender Sehwag (28), Virat Kohli (37) and Suresh Raina (29) got the starts but could not make it count. The Indian innings began on a disastrous note with Dinesh Karthik being dismissed for a duck off Lasith Malinga. Unfazed by the early loss of his opening partner, Virender Sehwag luanched into the offensive with a flurry of boundaries picking up Nuwan Kulasekera and Angelo Mathews for special treatment. But Sehwag's belligerence was shortlived as he was run out trying to steal non-existent leg bye. The Indians then suffered another jolt when Yuvraj Singh also returned to the pavilion, falling prey to Perera. — PTI Scoreboard Sri Lanka India |
Modi’s charges against Srinivasan bundle of lies: BCCI chief
Mumbai, August 28 “I can produce papers which prove that the charges levelled by Mr Modi against Mr Srinivasan are blatant lies,” Manohar said. Asked whether these papers were tabled at today's meet and accepted by the committee members, Manohar merely said, "yes". Two days ago Srinivasan, had rubbished reports that he tried to 'fix' the players' auction and insisted he won the bid for star England all-rounder Andrew Flintoff "fair and square”. A TV channel had claimed that Srinivasan, in connivance with Modi, tried to fix the bid for Flintoff in the Super Kings' favour. The channel had quoted an email purportedly written by Modi to Srinivasan, which read “what a nightmare to convince them not to terminate (Sohail) Tanvir and also not to take Flintoff. (Shane) Warne went off the handle. But have managed it by using stick and carrot strategy. Thus they have $1.875 million.”. Warne is the captain-cum-coach of Rajasthan Royals. Srinivasan, refuting the charges while talking to another TV channel, had said he didn't do anything wrong and his franchise outbid Rajasthan Royals as only they had the full purse of $2 million. "I didn't need anybody's favour. Rajasthan Royals bid for $1.5 million for Flintoff, I beat them at $1.55 million. So where is the deal? How can Modi have control of Shane Warne unless he is the owner of the Rajasthan Royals," he had said. “We did nothing wrong. We won fair and square. We were the only one who could have bought new players because I had the full purse. I didn't need anybody's favour,” the BCCI Secretary had said. BCCI chief Manohar also said he was yet to decide when to press criminal charges against Modi as authorised by the Board's EGM on July 3. "I will decide when to press criminal charges against Mr Modi and I will inform you (accordingly)," he told reporters outside the BCCI headquarters here. The only other matter taken up today at the meeting was the annual accounts ahead of next month's AGM, the Board chief said. Meanwhile, Lalit Modi's lawyer lashed out at the BCCI chief for calling the suspended IPL chairman a “liar” and said he should stop defending Srinivasan and take action instead. “Very unfortunate to hear such an intemperate expression by BCCI president Shashank Manohar calling Lalit Modi a liar, whereas he has not said anything," Modi's lawyer Mehmood Abdi said. — PTI |
CWG panel bars media from training camps
Sonepat, August 28 In a communique sent to all SAI centers this Monday, the joint-secretary of SAI Pravir Kishan has asked the authorities not to allow media inside the premises. Such an order is being looked upon in the media circles as a blatant attack on the freedom of press. To the dismay of many reporters today who went to the SAI’s northern center at Rai to meet the country’s wrestlers attending a camp here, the authorities did not allow them to even enter the premises stating they had been issued specific directions by the joint-secretary SAI not to let players interact with the media. When The Tribune team spoke to Mukesh Kumar, director of the center, he said only a special permission from a joint-secretary level official could let the media interact with the players. Joint-secretary SAI Pravir Kishan, when contacted, refused to speak to the media on the pretext of being very busy. Even as the media personnel tried to speak to a few other top officials in the SAI and the Commonwealth Games Organizing Committee, none was available for comments. Meanwhile, some of the national wrestlers the media managed to meet at the gate of the center, expressed concerns over the latest directives of the SAI. The players on the condition of anonymity said it was the media which brought fame to them and were not in favour of such directives. As per reports, the mediapersons were also not allowed to enter the premises of the Netaji Subhash National Institute of Sport at Patiala, which is another important center of the SAI holding preparatory camps for the games. Her coach said she was a very sincere student and would certainly win a medal in the Games as well. |
Pak-England Test Series
London, August 28 The pair, who came to the crease with England in deep trouble at 102 for seven in their first innings on Friday, broke the previous mark of 313 set by Pakistan's Wasim Akram and Saqlain Mushtaq against Zimbabwe in 1996. The partnership was finally broken 15 minutes before lunch when Broad was dismissed lbw to off-spinner Saeed Ajmal for 169. At the interval, England were 445 for eight in their first innings with Trott still at the crease on 183. A draw would be enough for England to win the series 2-1. Trott, who scored 226 in the Lord's test against Bangladesh this year, took a single off the first ball he faced on Saturday to reach 150. Mohammad Amir was unable to repeat his heroics of Friday when he took six wickets to become the youngest bowler to reach 50 test wickets. After 45 minutes he was replaced at the Pavilion end by Mohammad Asif, who was driven gloriously for two fours in an over by Broad to reach his 150 with 14 boundaries and a six. The world record fell when Broad crashed Wahab Riaz for another four through the covers, a mark greeted with prolonged applause by a capacity crowd basking in the sunshine. Trott joined in the fun by gliding off-spinner Saeed Ajmal through mid-wicket for a beautifully timed four. His concentration showed no sign of wavering in an epic innings which began on Thursday's rain-ruined opening day. The stand finally ended when Broad was hit on the pads attempting a sweep. He was initially given not out by Billy Bowden, who was over-ruled for the third time in the innings by third umpire Steve Davis after Pakistan appealed.

Sania enters US Open main draw
New York, August 28 Sania saved four beakpoints and broke Catalina twice to race to a opening set lead. However, Catalina fought her way back by winning the second set, cashing in on both the break chances that came her way. In the final set, Sania saved four breakpoints and broke Catalina twice to book herself a spot in the main draw. It was for the first time since her breakthrough year in 2005 at Australian Open that Sania had to go through qualifiers to compete in a Grand Slam. Sania's best Slam performance came at US Open in 2005 when she made the pre-quarterfinals. A recurrent wrist injury and loss of form dented Sania's ranking heavily as she is now languishing at 160. Somdev Devvarman will represent India's challenge in the men's singles after earning a direct entry into the last Grand Slam of the season. — PTI |
