Round-the-clock railway service sought: Claiming that 4500 tickets are issued to the rail passengers here almost daily, the Railway Passengers Association (North Zone) has faxed a memorandum to the chairman of the Railway Board demanding functioning of both ticket counters round-the-clock. Association vice-president Hanuman Dass Goyal informed. Office-bearers elected: The following were unanimously elected as office-bearers of the local unit of the Chandigarh-Punjab Union of Journalists during the annual meeting: president- Raj Sadosh, vice-president- Shyam Sunder Sachdeva, general secretary- Rajesh Sachdeva and cashier- Ranjeev Raheja. Bhupinder Brar, Satish Munjal, BK Soni and Rajiv Narang were nominated as members of the working committee.
Trust members nominated: The following members of the local Improvement Trust have been nominated by the state government: Vijay Nagpal, Ravi Makkar, Geeta Chaudhary (all councillors), Gurdarshan Singh Sidhu, Om Parkash Kataria and Suresh

Elected: Amarjeet
Singh, councillor, was elected vice-president of local municipal
council at an election meeting held here on Monday. The meeting was
called by Ranbir Singh, executive officer, to elect the vice-president
and it was presided over by Ravinder Kumar SDM. At today's election
meeting, 10 councillors, along with Didar Singh Bhatti MLA attended
the meeting, where as four councillors, including SAD (B) councillor
didn’t attend the meeting. Kulbhushan Malhotra, president of the
council, proposed the name of Amarjeet Singh for the post of
vice-president. SDM declared him elected.

Swine flu case: A suspected patient of swine flu has been admitted to the Civil Hospital here. Dr R.K. Bassan, DHO, said the patient had symptoms of swine flu. The sample would be taken in the morning and disease could be confirmed only after results.
Three hurt in mishaps: A young girl, Isha of Mallika Chowk, Mohindru Mohalla, and Hira Lal and his wife Rita of Mithu Basti were injured in two separate accidents in the city today. While Isha sustained serious injuries when a Balero vehicle hit her Scooty near Kamal Palace, Hira Lal and Rita were hurt when their bicycle collided with an autorickshaw near Football
Chowk.
Body found: The body of an unidentified migrant youth has been found from the accumulated rainwater at Preet Nagar on Sodal Road falling under Division 8 police station. ASI Ajmer Singh said the body was floating in the accumulated rainwater. The police sent the body to the Civil Hospital for autopsy. The police initiated inquest proceedings under section 174 of the CrPC in this regard.

Special counter to monitor LPG agencies: With a view to streamlining functioning of the LPG agencies as well as to mitigate the grievances relating to the supply of LPG cylinders, Deputy Commissioner Shruti Singh has mooted setting up of a special counter at the Suvidha Centre here.
The initiative, first of its kind in Punjab, was discussed at a meeting with the representatives of the LPG agencies and officials of the District Food and Civil Supplies here today. While stressing the need of evolving a transparent and pro-consumer system of distribution of LPG cylinders, Shruti said all the LPG agencies would have to maintain the day-to-day data regarding booking and delivery of the LPG cylinders and information regarding new consumers at the Suvidha Centre’s website daily at 5 pm.

2 houses burgled: A house of cloth merchant Mahinder Gaba was burgled in local Fateh Singh Nagar late last night. One LCD TV, two cameras and silver ornaments were stolen. The SHO said the family members were away to Ludhiana to attend a marriage party and perhaps forgot to lock the house. The family found the house burgled on their return to Phagwara this morning. The police has registered a case. In another incident, a gang of burlgers struck at nearby Sangh Dhesian village in Phillaur sub-division. The house of Harmanpreet Singh was burgled. Valuable goods worth Rs 2.7 lakh, including cash of Rs 32,000 and 13 tolas of gold ornaments, were stolen. The Goraya Police has registered a case.
