Harassment of woman official
General manager of BSNL suspended

Ambala, August 12
The BSNL authorities in its order today suspended RK Dabra, general manager, posted here in the office of BSNL in a harassment case.

AK Gupta, chief general manager (telephones) (CGMT), today confirmed the suspension of Dabra, against whom a protest was held yesterday in connection with misbehaviour with a woman junior telecom officer who recently joined her duty at Ambala office.

She complained to other staff members that he called her and harassed her daily. Then the agitated staff members, including the BSNL Employees Union, went to his office and investigated the matter.

A demonstration was also held in front of the GM office demanding immediate action against the general manager.

Union leaders, including Rajinder and Manish, who raised the issue with the chief general manager AK Gupta, complained that Dabra not only misbehaved with the aggrieved woman official but also tried to make advances towards her. The JTO had joined only three days back and was working under the general manager.

The union has reported the matter to the National Women Commission. They also threatened if action against the erring GM was not taken within 24 hours, they would go on strike.

However, the CGMT took the matter seriously and constituted a three-member committee of women officers and union leaders and asked them to submit the report soon.

In lieu of the spectacular performance by actor Jimmy Shergill in Punjabi movie “Mel Karade Rabba,” parents of Jimmy Shergill, Satyajit Shergill and Balraj Shergill, were honoured during a function “Yai Yai cute kids 2” organised by Models Guru at the Rajindra Gymkhana Club. Municipal Commissioner Manjit Singh Narang was the chief guest.

The main attraction of the function were events like Prince and Princess Patiala, Mom and me, ramp runner and solo dance. Boogie Woogie winner Esha Dang and singer Rohanpreet Singh were also present to encourage the children.

Better Salaries
Pbi varsity teachers call off strike

Patiala, August 12
A delegation of Punjabi University teachers, who are protesting for the past few days, had a meeting with the Vice-Chancellor Dr Jaspal Singh here today.

The teachers discussed salary benefits and allowances consequent upon their promotions on the basis of their service.

They told the Vice-Chancellor regarding their problems. He agreed with them and apprised them of efforts being made by him. The teachers presented a letter listing facts pertaining to their demand supported by relevant documents, including circulars of departments of higher education and finance, Punjab. They stated that there was no legal or technical impediment in granting their just demand except the arbitrary attitude of deputy controller local audit.

At the end of the meeting, Vice-Chancellor assured them to consider their demands. Later, the agitating teachers decided to suspend their protest for some time.

They told the media that in case their demands were not met soon they would resume the agitation.

Speeding vehicle kills 46-yr-old

A man was killed on-the-spot when his motorbike was hit by a speeding vehicle on the Bassi Pathana-Nandpur Kalour road here today.

According to police, Balwinder Kumar (46), who works in a wine shop at Ahata, Nandpur Kalour, was coming home in the night on his motorbike when a speeding vehicle hit him and fled.

Balwinder fell on the road and died on-the-spot. The body remained on the road the whole night.

Some passerby informed the police this morning that his body was taken to a local civil hospital and after the autopsy the body was handed over to relatives. The police has registered a case under Section 279, 304 and 427 of the IPC.

Residents stage dharna over poultry farm pollution

Dera Bassi, August 12
Residents of Behra village today staged dharna in front of a poultry farm against pollution caused by the poultry farm.

Traffic on the link road was also affected due to dharna. Village residents said they were being harassed due to the pollution caused by the poultry farm situated in residential area of the village.

They alleged that administration was not taking any steps despite repeated complaints against the pollution norms being violated by the poultry farm.

Karm Singh, who was leading the dharna, said they couldn’t even eat their meals due to the pollution.

The pollution is in turn is giving rise to several diseases in the area, he added. He said a complaint was filed with SDM Dera Bassi two months ago, but nothing has been done so far. He alleged that poultry farm was situated in the residential area of village, which is against the law.

The police reached the spot of dharna and pacified people. Puneet Goyal, SDM, Dera Bassi, said the case was pending in the court and decision would be taken soon after the hearing was over.

Five injured in scuffle

In a scuffle between two groups of Rampur Seuri village of Pinjore block, five persons, including a woman, got injured. The victims sustained multiple injuries and were rushed to Pinjore Primary Health Centre.

According to information, the quarrel took place last night between the two groups over the illegal sale of house construction material on the national highway 22, near Surajpur. The injured -- Gopal, Krishan and Inderjit -- alleged that they were attacked by Karan Singh and Shyam and many others of Rampur Seuri village with wooden sticks.

While Imratia, a woman, received head injuries, another person, Naipal, got leg injuries. Both groups have lodged their complaints in the police station.

Judicial custody for cops caught taking bribe

High drama was witnessed today at the CBI special court of Darshan Singh as the investigative agency’s sleuths produced Industrial Area police station SHO Dilsher Singh, sub-inspector Hans Raj and two others, all of whom have been charged with demanding a bribe of Rs 40,000 from a Panchkula resident. The court sent them to 14 days’ judicial custody.

Meanwhile, the UT IGP, PK Shrivastava, placed both the accused cops under suspension. Talking to TNS Dilsher said, “I’m innocent. Some people have conspired against me. I’ll fight my own battle.”

The court was jam-packed with Dilsher’s supporters, including his colleagues, as well as court staff and lawyers. Over a hundred of his supporters were present when he was produced in the courtroom.

CBI officials said two people, identified as Jhujjar Singh, owner of a tea stall near the Industrial Area police station, and Satwant Sethi, had accepted a bribe of Rs 40,000 from the complainant on behalf of the police officials charged in the case. There were heated arguments between two lawyers as both had turned up with a ‘vakalatnama’ for Sethi, one of the suspects. However, to resolve the issue one of the lawyers tore up the document.

Sector 43 district court complex

As the case for construction of a judicial complex in Sector 43 came up for hearing before the Bench of Chief Justice Mukul Mudgal and Justice Ajay Tewari, UT senior standing counsel Sanjay Kaushal said: “The shortfall between the estimated amount and the sanctioned amount by the Government of India shall be made good by the UT Administration”.

The assertion came after the Union of India asserted: “The matter has been examined and this ministry has conveyed administrative approval of the competent authority for Rs 23,62,80, 651. To meet the remaining cost, the ministry advised the administration to sanction the project under powers of Rs 10 crore given to the Administrator”.

The high court had earlier directed the Union of India to immediately release the remaining fund of Rs 5.60 crore, as the construction work of judicial complex in Sector 43 was virtually at a standstill. The Division Bench had observed it was contemptuous because the Centre was not following the orders and releasing the required funds.

Installation of STP

The Punjab and Haryana High Court today observed a status report filed by Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) on completion of sewage treatment plant (STP) indicated “lack of efforts on behalf of the Mohali Municipal Council.

The Bench of Chief Justice Mukul Mudgal and Justice Ajay Tewari also permitted Mohali MC to be made a party, while asserting: “We find that Mohali MC is not a party”. The case will now come up on November 11.

In an affidavit filed through GMADA Superintending Engineer, it was stated work of outfall sewer from Sector 76 to STP has been initiated but the work of plugging illegal sewer connections in storm drains in Sector 72 and Sector 73 under had not been done. It was alleged that the MC was not showing any interest in completion of the STP.

Instead, it was creating hurdles. In March, the then Superintending Engineer had filed an affidavit stating they had almost completed the construction work of STP and it would be operational by May 31. The matter had reached to the high court after a writ petition was filed by a Mohali resident for installing a STP for Lakhnour village and other parts of Mohali.

Nari Niketan Rape Case
Victim was scared on seeing accused: Witness

Chandigarh, August 12
Meenakshi, a witness in the Nari Niketan rape case, has stated during cross-examination that the victim got scared when she saw Bhupinder Singh, one of accused, for the first time.

Deposing in the court of Additional District and Sessions Judge GC Garg she stated that when the mentally challenged victim was shifted from Nari Niketan in Sector 26 to Ashreya in Sector 47, her medical examination was not conducted.

She further added that at that time no record of the menstruation cycle was maintained at the institute.

Meanwhile, former superintendent of Nari Niketan, Ritika Sheokand, who was summoned in the last hearing after the mentally challenged girl who was allegedly raped at the institution, stated before the court that she had informed Sheokand about the sexual assault. The case was adjourned to September 13 when Ritika’s statement will be recorded.

The court also recorded the statement of Dr Vani Ratnam, convener of Ashreya and Dr Poonam Goel, professor of Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics of GMCH-32, and Dr Bharti Goel, assistant, Department of Gynecology. — TNS

Man held for bribing official

In a rare incident the police arrested a Gurgaon-based resident for bribing a controller of Haryana Prathamik Shiksha Pariyojna Parishad at his office in Sector 17 on Wednesday for seeking transfer to his hometown.

The police said, the accused, identified as 46-year-old Raj Kumar, a junior engineer, posted at Mewat district in Haryana, had allegedly thrust Rs 5,000 into the drawer of controller Sumer Singh Bishnoi.

Bishnoi told the police that the accused was posted at Mewat last year. He, in his application, sought transfer claiming that his wife was not keeping well.Acting on the complaint, the police arrested the accused after registering a caseat the Sector-17 police station.The accused was today produced before a local court, which remanded him in judicial custody.

Man booked for suicide bid

The police booked a Sector 56 resident for attempting to commit suicide after he allegedly consumed a poisonous substance last night.

The police said Kanhiya Rajak, a resident of Sector 56, tried to kill himself by consuming some poisonous substance at his residence yesterday.

He was admitted to the PGI in an unconscious state. The police today said his condition was stable. A case has been registered in the Sector-39 police station.

Stolen

Seema Mehta, a resident of Sector 38, filed a complaint with the police alleging that someone had stolen her cycle from her residence yesterday.

In another incident, Vikas Gupta, a resident of Sector 45, lodged a complaint with the police alleging that someone had stolen his scooter (CH 01 W 3625) from in front of his house yesterday.

Two separate cases of thefts have been registered at different police stations.

Man booked for sending obscene MMS

A Dhakoli resident has lodged a complaint against a Chandigarh-based man for allegedly sending obscene MMS on her mobile phone. The police has registered a case against Rohit Sehgal, a resident of Sector 33, Chandigarh, on the complaint of the woman.

The woman alleged that the accused had sent an MMS on her mobile yesterday.

Booked for theft

The police booked five minor boys who were caught red-handed while stealing brass taps from the K-area in Dhakoli here today.

However, they were produced in a juvenile court, Mohali, from where they were sent to juvenile home in Ludhiana. According to the police, Manohar Singh, an Army official, stated that he noticed the minors were stealing the taps and other metallic fittings from the washrooms of their unit in the afternoon. He immediately informed his colleagues and nabbed them. A case has been registered.

Two injured

Around six persons, armed with swords and rods, allegedly thrashed two youths when they were sitting in the shop in the market area at Pabhat here this evening. Before the police could arrive, the miscreants managed to flee.

The injured have been identified as Narinder Singh and Lakhwinder Singh and admitted to the GMCH-32, Chandigarh.

The investigating officer stated that Narinder Singh was injured when he was attacked by an unidentified group of miscreants. The police said old rivalry could to be the reason behind the attack. However, the case would be registered after recording the statements of the injured.

St Xavier’s, St Kabir make it to final four

The host team St Xavier’s School, Sector 44, along with St Kabir, Sector 26, St Solider’s International Public School, Sector 28, and St Anne’s Convent School, Sector 32, moved into the final-four bracket of the St Xavier’s Six-A-Side Soccer Tournament being played on the school ground here.

In quarterfinal matches, St Xavier’s thrashed St Joseph School, Sector 44, by 5-0 in a one-sided affair. The account was opened by Sanyukt in the 10th minute of the game. Gagan extended the lead to 2-0 just before the half time. Taking advantage of the pressure on the rivals, Lal Gopal struck two goals (18th and 19th minutes) within a span of two minutes. The 5-0 victory was sealed by Gagan in the 20th minute.

In the other match, St Kabir got the better of St Solider’s, Mohali, by 2-1 while St Anne’s beat Satluj Public School, Panchkula, by 3-1 to secure berth in the semifinals. On the other hand, St Solider’s International, Sector 28, drubbed Chandigarh Baptish by 2-0.
