Watchman murdered

Fatehgarh Sahib, August 10
Some unidentified persons murdered a watchman deployed at a sheller of Macharaye Kalan village near Mandi Gobindgarh.The deceased, identified as Jagannath, was working in a sheller for a very long time. Another employee of the sheller found his body this morning and the owners along with the police were immediately informed about it.

Senior police officials reached the spot and took stock of the situation. Fingerprint experts and dogs squads were also pressed into service. Police officials said that the body of the deceased was covered by a piece of cloth.

The watchman had called some of his friends last night and all of them had taken liquor. There was a possibility that they could have quarrelled over some minor issue, said the police officials.

They added that the accused seemed to have been known to the deceased and would be arrested soon.

3 injured in mishaps

Dera Bassi, August 10
Three persons, including a student of Swami Parmanand College, sustained injuries in separate mishaps at Dera Bassi and Lalru on Tuesday. According to information, Dinesh Kumar, a resident of Chunni Kalan, and his sister Deepa Rani were injured after their motorcycle was hit by an unidentified vehicle near Bhushan Factory.

The injured were rushed to the PGI, Chandigarh, where their condition is stated to be critical. A case under Sections 279, 338 has been registered. In another incident, Anchal Singh, a student of Swami Parmanand College, was hit by a vehicle when he was crossing the national highway in Lalru. He was rushed to the GMCH, Chandigarh. — OC

Foul play alleged in woman’s death

Fatehgarh Sahib, August 10
A woman in the nearby Waraich village died under mysterious circumstances today.The deceased has been identified as Jaswinder Kaur, wife of Sukhwinder Singh. Their marriage was solemenised around eight years back. Her body was found hanging from a ceiling fan.

Family members of Jaswinder alleged that she was harassed by her in-laws for bringing insufficient dowry and was killed by her husband’s family members.

They alleged that to give the incident the shape of a suicide, the family members hung Jaswinder from the ceiling fan. A case of murder has been registered on the statements of Harbhajan Singh, brother of the deceased. The police has booked husband Sukhwinder Singh, mother in-law Amar Kaur, brother in-law Inderjit Singh and sister in-law Kulwinder Kaur. Police officials said that efforts were on to nab the accused booked in the case.

350 saplings planted

Patiala, August 10
A tree-plantation drive was organised at the Army Cantonment area on Tuesday. The drive was organised by the NCC group, including the fourth Punjab Girls Battalion NCC, fifth Punjab Battalion NCC, third Air Squadron

and 1 Punjab Naval. Retd Brig SS Grewal, member of the PPSC, was the chief guest on the occasion. Around 350 saplings were planted. — TNS

T20: Sumeet stars in Delhi win

Fine all-round performance by Sumeet (68 and five for five) of Services, Delhi, helped in thrashing the local outfit Royal Greater Club, Chandigarh, by 109 runs in the Challanger T20 Cup at Tau Devi Lal Stadium, Sector 3, here today.

Batting first, Services, Delhi, put on 152 run for the loss of three wickets in 20 overs.

Sumeet finished as the highest scorer with 68 runs followed by Irfan, who chipped in 26 runs.

In reply, Royal Greater team was bundled up at 43 runs. Sumeet ripped apart the batting lineup of the rivals with his deadly spell.

The second match between the LIC Club and CM XI was won by the former by 10 wickets.

Chasing the target of 121 by CM XI, the LIC team overhauled it without losing a single wicket.

ICL Group of Colleges beat JCD Club, Sirsa by 95 runs in the third match.

Batting first, ICL team scored 184 runs for the loss of two wickets. In reply, but JCD could muster only 89 runs all out.

Sri Guru Gobind Singh College record win

Sri Guru Gobind Singh College, Sector 26, Chandigarh, won the Panjab University Inter-College Kho-Kho (Men) Championship, while DAV College, Sector 10, and PG Government College, Sector 11, secured the second and third positions, respectively.

Results:

League match: SGGS College, Chandigarh, beat DAV College, Sector 10, Chandigarh, by an innings and 11 points (score 12-01); DAV College, Chandigarh, beat PG Government College, Sector 11, Chandigarh, by an innings and 11 points (score 13-2).

In table tennis, GGS College for Women, Sector 26, lifted the trophy in the PU Inter-College Table-Tennis (Women) A-Division Championship for this session.

GGDSD College, Sector 32, finished second, while AS College for Women, Khanna, and Khlasa College for Women, Ludhiana, secured the third and fourth positions, respectively.

Chandigarh, August 10
Top seed Harry Jindal was defeated by Pradeep K Reddy of Andhra Pradesh 4-6, 1-6 in the boys U-18 singles event during the AITA Talent Series being held at the CLTA, Sector 10, and the Lake Sports Complex here today.

Reddy’s win has enabled him to enter the quarterfinals of the tournament.

On the other hand, in the Boys and girls U-14 category, all seeded players stormed into the quarterfinals.

Quarterfinal matches of singles and doubles events will begin at 8 am at the same venues.

Sixteen teams have confirmed their participation in the St Xavier’s Six-A-Side Soccer Tournament commencing tomorrow at St Xavier’s School, Sector 44, here.In the inaugural match, the hosts will meet Ajit Karam Singh International Public School, Mohali, at 9 am.

Mahipat pockets gold in wrestling

Seventeen-year-old Mahipat, a budding wrestler, was honoured by the Gulzar Wrestling Akahara, Zirakpur, on Tuesday. He brought laurels after winning a gold medal in the 54kg category during the recently-held Asian Sub Junior Wrestling Championship at Bangkok.

KS Minhas (retd IAS) was the chief guest on the occasion.

Coach of Gulzar Akhara Ranbir Singh Kundu said Mahipat had won the gold medal in the 54kg category.
