Foodgrains panel blames state, central govt for storage woes, calls for probe
Jalandhar, August 2 General Secretary of the Committee Akshar Kumar said there had been no appointment in any of the procurement and storage agencies since the past more than 25 years. “More than 80 per cent of the staff has retired but there has been no replacement. The existing staff is burdened with much more work than the permissible
standards,” he claimed. Giving statistics, he said, “As per the norms, an employee is supposed to take care of 5000 MT of grain at one place but due to the crisis-like situation an employee is forced to handle 1 lakh MT of grains stored at various centres which is practically not possible.” He added that no new covered godowns had been constructed since the past eight years where as the production had increased manifold since then. As much as 80 per cent of the food grains (which is approximately 80 lakh tones) have to be stored in fields or on kutcha uncovered sheds which if not shifted can lead to total damage in six months, the committee secretary claimed. “The Centre has failed to lift 60 lakh tonnes of rice from shellers which too is lying in the state godowns. The rice has already occupied a lot of space leaving very little room for the wheat crop,” he further pointed out. He said a large quantity of produce had last year been stored in plastic bags instead of the normal jute bags which had further resulted in the deterioration. “Since it is a live grain, it needs air for proper storage which is possible only in jute bags,” he further added. |

Land offer in Ethiopia
Jalandhar, August 2 Talking to The Tribune, Poscon secretary-general Jung Bahadur Singh Sangha, who was part of the delegation, said it was not an easy task for an individual farmer to accomplish the task right from buying hundreds of hectares of land, arrange loans, transport, power and irrigation facilities on foreign shores. “To avail the benefits of the lucrative offer made by the Ethiopian government to the fullest, we have decided to constitute a company of willing farmers which would eventually float shares under the project. With this, we can buy agricultural lands in bulk,” he said. “They are offering us not only land but also to invest in or to develop agro-based industry. This can be achieved only by adopting purely a professional approach,” he added while stressing the need to constitute a company or limited firm. Ethiopian Ambassador Gennet Zewide and Ethiopian Minister for Capacity Building Tefera Walwa, who visited the city to participate in a farmers’ meet organised by Poscon on June 15, offered uncultivated land mass of 1.7 millions in Ethiopia to Punjabi farmers just at the lease rate of Rs 1,000 per year. |
