Purse snatched
Ambala, July 30 According to information, Savita Bajaj was going to her house located in Sector 7 on a rickshaw today. When she was about to reach her house, a motorcyclist came and snatched her purse. Savita informed the police that the motorcyclist was wearing helmet so that he could not be recognised. She said the motorcycle was also not bearing any number plate. The matter was reported to the police post of Sector 7. Savita’s husband Joginder Bajaj said it was the third incident of snatching purse in this sector within a few months. Meanwhile, Urban Estate Welfare Society president Madan Lal Aggarwal said the police patrolling should be improved in this sector. |

Residents protest against unhygienic conditions
Dera Bassi, July 30 They alleged that officials of the market committee, Lalru, had been charged from the rehri owners and other persons. Lack of proper disposal of rainwater had caused floods in the mandi during the heavy rain for past few days. Due to accumulated water, a youth was also electrocuted after spreading current in water. Meanwhile, secretary market committee, Lalru, said steps would be taken to clean the market. |

Panchkula, July 30 Even though no member of the Panchkula Bar Association told the reason behind the strike, sources claim that lawyers were irked with the behaviour of one of the judicial officers in the district courts. The work at the court may also suffer tomorrow, as the Panchkula Bar Association will hold its next meeting on August 2. |

Manipur clinch football title
Chandigarh, July 30 Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda was the chief guest. On the other hand, the Football Stadium witnessed a huge crowd of supporters of both teams. A fine three goals by Rinaroy Devi ensured victory for the winners. The first half of the game witnessed a tough competition. The Haryana team drew the first blood in the 11th minute of the game. Preeti put Haryana in the lead with her cracking shot. But losing no calm in the ground, Manipur levelled the score in the 20th minute of the game when S Rinaroy Devi placed the ball in the net. After the breather, Manipur came back in the match. The players were seen getting more possession over the ball in the midfield. The Manipur team took the lead in the 47th minute when Ph Bina Devi scored the second goal for Manipur. Just after two minutes, Rinaroy Devi netted the third goal of the match. E Bindiyarani Devi scored the fourth goal in the 61st minute of the game. Rinaroy scored her third goal through the pass by Y Kamala Devi in the 67th minute.A goal by Y Kamala Devi in the 76th minute sealed the victory for the winners of the 9th edition of the trophy. Soon after the match, the Chief Minister distributed prizes among the winners. After receiving the glittering trophy, Manipur girls expressed their joy by dancing in the rain.Hooda also announced a cash award of Rs 51,000 to Haryana goalkeeper Raveena for her outstanding performance in the tournament. While addressing the gathering, Hooda congratulated the teams for their performance and announced a grant of Rs 5 lakh for organisers of the Chandigarh Football Association (CFA). Vineet gets better of Aman
Chandigarh, July 30 After losing first two frames, Vineet came back in the game in the last three sets and won the match by 3-2. In the first frame, Aman was on the lead by 32 points with three reds on the table, whereas Vineet brought the lead to eight points when blue, pink and black balls were on the table. In his chance, Vineet missed the blue ball. Taking full advantage of it, Aman potted well and extended his lead to 13 points. But coming back from behind, Vineet potted pink and black and levelled the score. In the double black, Aman potted the black ball and won the first frame. In the second frame, Aman grabbed breaks of 29 and 21 and kept his lead throughout the frame and won the frame. But Vineet bounced back in the next three frames and played with full control over the cue ball and won the next three frames and match. Puneet got the better of Sumit by 3-1 in the second match. In the first frame, Sumit hit breaks of 28 and 25 and won the frame, but Puneet took good lead in the next three frames and won the match. In the senior billiards league, former Haryana champion Sameer Bhalla defeated Aneesh Saini by two frames to won 100 points each in the best of three frames. Sameer Bhalla made odd breaks of 32, 27 and 39. In the second match, defending champion Anil Sharma defeated Aneesh Saini by 2-0. In the first frame, Aneesh was leading by 21 points but Anil Sharma hit break of 22 and unfinished break of 27 and won the frame by 100-79, but in the second frame, Anil Sharma won the frame by 100-45. SAI selection trials from August 3
Chandigarh, July 30 The three-day trials will be conducted under athletics, badminton, football, hockey, swimming, and wrestling events under the age group of 14 to 21 years, however, age can be relaxed for talented players. In the trials, the players will pass through physical fitness test, performance test on field in their respective games and on the last day have to undergo interview. After the procedure, 20 players in each discipline will be selected under the scheme. “Earlier we were allotted six events by SAI, but now there are seven disciplines with addition of gymnastics. After poor response in the previous trials, we are conducting it again,” said Dr CS Grewal, director of physical education, Panjab University. Under this scheme, the players would be provided a stipend of Rs 6,000 for 10 months, Rs 2,000 for competition exposure, Rs 150 per year on insurance and sports kit. The university will get a hefty amount of Rs 1 lakh as financial support for the sports infrastructure from SAI. “The university players can also participate in the trials and if any player clear the trials, he or she will also be included under this scheme,” said Dr Grewal. ‘Scheme should be for PU teams’ On the other hand, players in campus were seen having a different view about the selection of players under SAI scheme. A Panjab University player, Anil said, “What is the use of the scheme, if the university players cannot take full advantage of it. This scheme should be only provided to PU teams, so that they could perform better in the tournaments like inter-college. If the campus is providing them grounds, the campus players should get the advantage of it, not outsiders,” said Anil. |
St Kabir lift Pre-Subroto Cup
Chandigarh, July 30 St Kabir defeated NPS by 4-2 in a tie-breaker to qualify for the Subroto Cup to be held in New Delhi later in November. Shivam, Nalin, Shabinder and Sachin converted the spot kick into goals from the winners, whereas Stanzin scored the lone spot kick for NPS. |
