India in Sri lanka Malinga out injured Fernando likely replacement Mendis to play in place of Murali 2nd Test begins from Monday
Galle, July 24
Sangakkara said for the ICC ranking system to be acceptable, the FTP should be "fair" with each side playing each other at least once, home or away. "Rankings need to be fairly done. A fair FTP is the first step towards having proper rankings. Once every two years each side should play each other at least once, home or away. “That's how you get a fair deal when it comes to Test cricket," he said. Sri Lanka themselves were ranked number two last year without having won a Test in India, Australia and South Africa, a spot they lost after their away loss to India. About his own side's dismal record in the three countries ranked higher than them, Sangakkara said, "I don't think we have played enough Test cricket away. Two Test matches here, two Test matches there, I think that's not good. We need to play Tests regularly. We have a very good balanced attack, pace and spin. From 2006 to 2009 we have done well. We have won in New Zealand, in England, and in Pakistan. South Africa, Australia and India are the three places that we need to win. We need to play often in those places," said the suave Lankan skipper. Interestingly, the current Test ranking system does not give extra weightage to victories away from home. The rating points earned or conceded are calculated based on the difference between where the teams stood before the start of the series. Malinga out of second Test
Colombo: Sri Lanka suffered a big jolt ahead of the second cricket Test against India as paceman Lasith Malinga was today ruled out due to a stiff knee. Malinga's absence from the line-up, which will also be without retired Muttiah Muralitharan, will give India a huge relief as they seek to level the series. The second Test begins here from Monday. Malinga returned to Test cricket in a spectacular fashion as he took seven wickets, five in the second innings, in Sri Lanka's comprehensive 10-wicket win in the first match at Galle. Malinga, who remained out of competitive cricket for a long time, is likely to be replaced by Dilhara Fernando. Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) officials maintained that Malinga is not injured. “There is no injury as such to Malinga. Since he is coming after a long break, he is being rested. We want to protect him and he may play third Test,” Nishanta Ranatunga, SLC Secretary told PTI. “He only has some strain which is common to fast bowlers,” said Sri Lanka’s media manager Brian Thomas. Fernando in all likelihood will take Malinga's place but the Lankan team management also has the option of Dammika Prasad and Nuwan Kulasekara. Ajantha Mendis, who tormented the Indians in their last tour here, will take Muralitharan's place in the playing eleven. Mendis took six wickets in the only practice game before the Test series but was ignored by the selectors in the for the first Test. — PTI |
Pakistan beat Australia in thriller
Leeds, July 24 Ben Hilfenhaus was Australia's most potent bowler with 3-39, while Doug Bollinger finished with 3-53 after a nerve-shredding morning session. "To win against the world's best is always an achievement," Pakistan captain Salman Butt said. "We would have loved to have done it in front of our home crowd, but we need to tell them that we remember them and we hope we will be playing in front of them soon. It’s a new beginning for Pakistan cricket and especially for a young side.” Australia captain Ricky Ponting admitted his side had been struggling ever since it was bowled out for 88 on day one, having won the toss and decided to bat. “Looking back, we were surprised how much it swung on that first day,” Ponting said. “We were definitely playing catch-up from the start. They were probably the most difficult conditions any of us has ever batted in. But we had an opportunity yesterday to bring ourselves back into the game and, if we’re being harsh on ourselves, we probably let an opportunity slip in the second innings.” Umpire Rudi Koertzen, officiating in his 108th and final test before retiring, was given a guard of honor by the players as he walked on to the field. It was the last peaceful action of the morning as Pakistan, starting day four on 140-3, lost six wickets for 42 runs. If Australia was to stand a realistic chance it needed Bollinger to fire early and the initial signs were discouraging, as his third delivery was a full toss that Ali smashed through the covers for four, bringing up his first test 50. However, Bollinger's next ball tempted Ali into a rash prod outside off stump and he was caught behind by Tim Paine. Umar Akmal had already edged Hilfenhaus for four through the slips when he was caught behind off the same bowler for 8. — AP Scoreboard

IWF suspends coach on sex abuse charge
New Delhi, July 24 Malhotra, who was recommended by the IWF for Dronacharya Award for the last two years, has been relieved of his job at the Bangalore SAI Centre with immediate effect.” We have suspended Malhotra with immediate effect and has relieved him for his coaching job with Commonwealth core group weightlifters at Bangalore SAI Centre,” said IWF Secretary General Sahdev Yadav. Malleswari had alleged that the SAI coach, who has also been recommended for Dronacharya award, has been sexually harassing junior lifters for more than a decade now. Yadav said a three-member committee to be headed by IWF vice-president Kumbasi Subramanya with veteran coach Pal Singh Sandhu and IWF joint secretary Madan Lal Salvi as other members, will submit a report within seven days after probing the matter. “The allegations might have related to incidents happened earlier. We took charge only in December last year and we don’t have any complaint by anybody, including lifters, about sexual harassment by any coach or officials,” Yadav said. “But we don’t want to ignore anything so we have decided to suspend Malhotra.” — PTI |

Hockenheim, July 24 "Two thousandths of a second is not really the margin you are looking for," he added. "The main challenge will be tomorrow. It will be a tough fight against the red cars I guess." Brazilian Felipe Massa qualified third for Ferrari, a day before the first anniversary of the Hungarian Grand Prix qualifying crash that ended his 2009 season and left him in hospital with life-threatening head injuries. Red Bull's Australian Mark Webber, winner of three races this season, was fourth after making a mistake and running wide. — Reuters |
