Embezzlement Case
Ambala, July 24 A case in this regard was registered under Sections 420 and 120B, IPC, at the Housing Board Colony police post, Ambala Cantt, on June 4 on the complaint of two employees of the bank. On the statement of SP Goel, one of the bank directors, the investigating officer, Raj Kumar, recommended the inclusion of the name of the bank chairman in the scam. Manjit Singh is accused of siphoning off Rs 6.45 lakh of the bank into a new account opened in 2009. Earlier, a demonstration by members of the Postal and RMS Employees’ Welfare Society in front of Ambala Cantt bank branch was held against the chairman for his role in misappropriation of bank money. Another Rs 4.22 lakh was credited to the accounts of two directors of the bank against the bank norms. The investigating officer also checked bank records on July 15 in which embezzlement worth Rs 10,69,365 was detected, the sources added. |

Four held for robbery
Ambala, July 24 According to sources, the police had received a tip-off that some miscreants were planning a robbery. Ambala SP Shashank Anand said a police team raided the bus stand and and arrested Tinku, a resident of Dhanora, Sunny, a resident of Khashaypur village in Yamunanagar, Pardeep Kumar and Kala, both residents of Yamunanagar. The police has seized iron bars and three-wheelers from the miscreants, he said. The accused were produced in a local court, which remanded them in 14-day judicial custody. |

Mobile towers endanger life, property
Kharar, July 24 The building also houses six shops rented by the cooperative marketing society. Around two years ago, this tower was installed along with paraphernalia of generators and heavy machinery. Few days ago, one more company installed its tower, almost doubling up the load on the couple of decades old building. There are offices of registrar cooperative services at the backside of this building besides few other shops that are rented out to a tuition centre. The shopkeepers said the rays emitted by the tower may invite various ailments as well. Despite the fact that the matter has been brought to the notice of officials concerned and complaints have also been lodged, nothing has been done in this regard. |

Anti-encroachment drive from Aug 1
Ambala, July 24 According to information, out of the total 3,824 illegally constructed buildings within 30 metre from the roadside on highways in Ambala district, only 564 owners of such illegal constructions have submitted applications along with prescribed fee seeking approval in spite of several notices. Earlier, the Air Force station authorities had written to the Ambala district administration how the illegal structures had come up in the vicinity of the air base and needed to be pulled down. There were about 200 illegal structures only in the vicinity of Air Force station, sources said. On getting a complaint from the Air Force Authority alleging a serious threat to the security of aerodrome due to illegal construction, the DC, Ambala, swung into action and ordered DTP Ram Kumar to demolish all illegal structures in these unapproved colonies. Talking to mediapersons here, DC Sameer Pal Srow warned that demolition of all illegal structures on both sides of highways would commence from August 1 and the district town planner department had been instructed to demolish the illegal structures. District town planner Ram Kumar yesterday confirmed that the illegal structures would face the action after July 31. |

Rs 73,000 collected as fine
Ambala, July 24 The authorities had received complaints that a large number of passengers had been travelling without ticket on the Ambala-Saharnpur rail section. Two teams led by senior officers of the Ambala division carried out checking at the Kalanor railway station last evening. According to officials, around 10 trains were checked and 100 passengers were caught travelling without ticket. —

Kali Mata Temple Takeover
Kalka, July 24 Mandir management committee president Amar Nath Sharma and others claimed that the state government had deliberately occupied the temple without serving any notice on them. “We will challenge this in the Punjab and Haryana High Court to get justice,” he added. They alleged that they had relevant revenue records containing the names of their forefathers to establish their ownership of the temple. Sharma alleged that taking forcible possession of the historic temple, which dates back to the times of Pandavas, by the government was arbitrary, as the Haryana state notification stated that the government was taking over the possession of only those temples that had been constructed on government land. They added that over 150 families were dependent on the temple for their livelihood. |

Four hurt in accidents
Rajpura, July 24 The couple and their daughter received injuries in the accident and were taken to the local civil hospital. The driver of the vehicle sped away after the accident. In another accident, Joginder Singh, a mechanic and a resident of Nepra village, was injured after being hit by a speeding vehicle near the Kalka road here. He was on his way towards Jansua village on a bike. The police has registered cases in this regard. |

Chandigarh, July 24 This was stated by the newly appointed chairman of the Punjab and Haryana Bar Council Gurinder Pal Singh. He said a national-level meeting of all state bar councils was likely to be held on July 31 in Hyderabad to discuss the issue. A meeting of the State Bar Council of Punjab and Haryana was held under the chairmanship of HS Hooda, Advocate General Haryana, for conducting elections to the post of chairman. As per the election schedule, nominations were to be filed from 11 am to 1 pm, while withdrawals were allowed from 2 pm to 4 pm. Since only Gurinder Pal Singh had filed the nomination for the post of chairman, he was declared elected unopposed after the expiry of the nomination-withdrawal period. Earlier, in June, chairman of the Punjab and Haryana Bar Council Partap Singh had resigned from the post in protest against the BCI’s decision. |

Chandigarh, July 24 The court also imposed a fine of Rs 1,500 on each person. According to prosecution, both accused and victims were working as painters. On June 14, 2008, the victims - Laxman and Ramesh - were having dinner at Mauli Jagran when the accused -Jaibir and Rambir passed by. When they saw Laxman and Ramesh, the accused commented that the victims had taken a contract from them. This lead to a scuffle and other accused, Inderjit, Govinda, Bobby, Lakhan, Huni and Brijesh joined them and injured the victims. |

Chandigarh, July 24 The registrar had filed the case against these three and Karan Paul for violating the Company Act by not filing the balance sheet and annual returns. The complaint was filed on April 21, 2010. The registrar had in the complaint stated that the owners of the company-KPS Dreams-had tried to conceal its financial position. The case has been adjourned until October 4. —

2 booked for forging documents
Mohali, July 24 In January, Harbans and Harvinder Singh had submitted fake registry documents while seeking bail for undertrial Santokh Singh. On the basis of the documents attached with the bail bond, the undertrial was granted bail from January 11 to 17. However, when the undertrial jumped his bail, the court ordered attachment of the property of the persons who had furnished the bail bond. When the documents were examined, they were found to be fake. On the basis of the probe, Additional Session Judge SK Garg ordered registration of a case against the suspects. The police has arrested a man, Baljeet Singh, for stealing a photography camera worth Rs 1.5 lakh from a shop at Matour village. Manpreet Singh, a resident of Phase 10, had complained that the camera was stolen from the shop on July 7. Matour police station SHO Atul Soni said Baljeet had undergone jail in cases of theft in Chandigarh. He is the son of an Army officer and lives in Ram Darbar, Chandigarh. The accused confessed to having committed three more thefts. The stolen camera was to be sold by Baljeet Singh.

Zirakpur: Thieves decamped with cash and jewellery worth lakhs after breaking into the house of retired Colonel at Silver City. Col Kulwant Singh Ghai (retd) went to work in Chandigarh. On returning home around 7:30 pm, he found the house ransacked and things lying scattered. He said thieves entered the house after breaking the main door. He said around Rs 25,000 and jewellery worth lakhs were missing. The police registered a case and started investigations. Thieves also decamped with cash and valuables from three shops at Dera Bassi. Parminder Singh, owner of Rupindra Gas Agency, said he got a phone call from his neighbour that the locks of his shop were broken. When he reached his shop, he found that Rs 35,000 and valuables were missing. He informed the police about the theft. In another incident, thieves entered the shop of the municipal councillor from Ward 1 on the Gulabhgarh road and decamped with Rs 12,000. A theft was reported from a dairy, where thieves broke the window grill and stole Rs 10,000.
Electrocuted
Zirakpur: A 45-year-old man, Kanhaiya Lal, was electrocuted when he came in contact with live wire at Gazipur village here today. Kanhaiya, a migrant labourer, who was working at a construction site of a building, came in contact with an electricity cable and was electrocuted. Other labourers took him to a private hospital in Panchkula where doctors declared him brought dead. The body of the deceased has been handed over to the family after a post-mortem examination and inquest proceedings had been initiated. |

Youth arrested on rape charge
Chandigarh, July 24 The SHO of the Sector 39 police station, Inspector Janak Rana, said the 14-year-old victim had lodged a complaint in this connection with the UT SSP on July 12 and a case of rape, criminal conspiracy, abduction, wrongful confinement and criminal intimidation was registered on Thursday against the accused. The police has arrested Surinder alias Golu, 35-year-old Sarabjit Kaur and 36-year-old Gurwinder Singh in the case. The accused were produced before the court and were remanded in police custody. The police said the victim, a class X student, in her complaint had alleged that Sarabjit Kaur had called her on July 9 to her house and then took her to the residence of Gurwinder Singh in their locality. She was introduced to Surinder alias Golu, an auto-rickshaw driver, working in Sector 26 Grain Market. Sarabjit Kaur and Gurwinder Singh locked the victim in a room with Golu, who raped her. Later the trio threatened her of dire consequences if she told about the incident to any one. The victim returned home and told her mother about the incident and the matter was reported to the SSP. The victim’s father has died and she lives with her mother Balbir Kaur and two brothers and sister. Balbir is employed with a gas agency in Mohali. The police said Gurwinder Singh was unemployed and a notorious character, who was involved in several cases earlier as well. |
