Sulabh International to help clean Ambala
Ambala, July 16 In this connection, the Ambala municipal corporation has signed a contract with the Sulabh International for two months to clean the city after the floods. Srow further said if the experiment succeeded, a long-term agreement would be made with the social organisation for such type of cleanliness in Ambala Cantt and Ambala City. He said on an average and before floods, there used to be about 100 tonnes of garbage daily in these areas. But due to floods, the quantity of waste in these cities has increased to 145 tonnes per day, sources added. According to the sources, the Sulabh International will also provide tractor-trolleys, JCB machine and other equipment for collecting and lifting the waste from the city. The job of cleanliness would be undertaken under the supervision and guidelines of the municipal corporation. A sum of Rs 12.25 lakh per month would be paid to the Sulabh International by the corporation, the sources said. Meanwhile, to prevent the spread of water-borne diseases, the Deputy Commissioner told nodal officials had been appointed to coordinate with the district health officials and took effective measures to check outbreak of the water-borne diseases. After floods and during rainy season, the contamination of drinking water increases manifold. As a result, the risk of impending outbreak of water-borne diseases like diarrhoea, dysentery, gastroentrities, cholera and enteric fever are expected to rise. At the district level, supervisory medical teams have been constituted for preventive and curative services in the flood affected areas, Srow added. |

Theft in Amravati Enclave colony
Kalka, July 16 Anil Gupta, owner of the house, in his complaint to the police alleged that cash and jewellery was lying in the cupboard and he along with his family had gone to Dehradoon two days back. When they returned home today, they found that their house was burgled .The miscreants had decamped with cash and jewellery worth of lakhs of rupees and the articles were lying scattered in the room. A mentally ill man of Surajpur village of Pinjore block set his own house on fire today. The police sources revealed that they received a message that a fire had broken out in a house adjacent to Government school at Surajpur. The fire tenders were called by the police, who extinguished the fire. When the matter was investigated , it was found that RN Vastava , who is mentally ill, himself committed the crime. |
Four highway robbers acquitted
Chandigarh, July 16 The police got a tip-off that four persons, who had committed a robbery at a shop in Ludhiana were on their way to Chandigarh, carrying illegal arms and the looted cash to commit another robbery here. They were members of an inter-state gang of highway robbers operating in Chandigarh, Punjab, Haryana and Delhi. The police had, on October 30, 2009, erected a barricade near a police check post in Sector 42. The police then intercepted a white Maruti Swift car with a Punjab registration and arrested the accused. The police had recovered four revolvers, 25 cartridges, the Swift car and Rs 4.64 lakh in cash from them. An FIR was registered against them under Sections 401, 420, 467, 468, 471 and 473 of the IPC. They were also booked under Sections 25, 54 and 59 of the Arms Act. The accused had robbed a gun house at Hoshiarpur, about 100-km from here in April 2009. Three members of the gang were arrested by the Haryana police on June 5, 2009, and 85 weapons, a large amount of ammunitions and two luxury cars were seized from them. |

Land Deal Case
Chandigarh, July 16 Justice MMS Bedi of the High Court granted the regular bail to the baba after hearing at length his counsel SK Garg Nirwana. The baba, along with others, was accused of selling a piece of land for over Rs 1.2 crore to a private company on a forged general power of attorney. The alleged fraud was detected last year when Kamaljit Kaur, landowner residing in the USA, came to know that her 12 bigha and 13 biswa at Madhopur village in Patiala district had been sold to a Sector 8-based private company, on forged documents on September 30, 2005. The matter was reported to the local police, which registered a case of cheating, forgery and criminal conspiracy under Sections 419, 420, 467, 468, 471 and 120-B of the IPC against the baba and others on May 20, 2009. The land was registered in the name of Rattan Anmol Singh Bhullar on the basis of a general power of attorney. It was mentioned in the power of attorney that the sale deal was finalised for Rs 1, 20, 17,500 of which Rs 49 lakh were given in advance and the remaining Rs 80, 17,500 was paid through a demand draft dated September 28, 2005. The power of attorney was made in the name of Baba Pritpal Singh. Alleging that it was a fabricated power of attorney, Kamaljit Kaur maintained she was abroad when it was made. The police got the power of attorney examined from a government examiner at the Central Forensic Sciences Laboratory in Sector 36, which confirmed the signatures of JP Singh and Inderpal Singh, as witnesses on it, were original. The police had taken their handwriting samples in a local court on December 23, 2009, and that of Baba Pritpal Singh on January 7. |

Two Maloya residents arrested
Chandigarh, July 16 The cops arrested the youths, both in their early twenties and identified as Sunny Chauhan and Ashish Walia, from near a roundabout on the road dividing Sectors 25 and 38. The youths, who were riding a motorcycle, were chased and nabbed after they tried to dodge the police team at a checkpoint near a Bharat Petroleum depot in Sector 25. Jagbir Singh, DSP (Central), said the accused were found to be driving the motorcycle with fake number plate. This made the police to doubt their antecedents. Both accused were throughly searched. This led to the recovery of a .303 country-made pistol and a cartridge from Sunny and two cartridges from Walia. The DSP said both accused, during interrogation, disclosed that they had committed 25 snatchings, robberies, burglaries and thefts in different parts of the city so far. They used to target the drunkards lying on the roads during late night hours and loot them. Sukhbir Rana, SHO, Sector 11 police station, said so far a Maruti car, two motorcycles, five mobile phones, two bicycles, three gas cylinders, a country- made pistol and three cartridges had been recovered from them. The SHO said more recoveries were likely to be made from the accused following their sustained interrogation. Sunny’s parents had disowned him while Ashish’s mother had died. Both are known to the two robbers, Ijlas and Vinod, who were arrested earlier this month. The DSP said these youths knew each other and were in touch with the two others accomplices of Vinod and Ijlas, who are yet to be arrested. |

Lovelorn youth ends life
Chandigarh, July 16 The police said Bhatia, who was pursuing MCA through correspondence, had left a suicide note, in which he had held no one responsible for his death. SHO of the Sector 19 police station Inspector Ram Gopal said Varun had an affair with a girl for the past over four years. Recently he came to know that she was involved with someone else. Both of them had severed ties and the boy was under depression. The police said the body was spotted by the deceased’s mother when she had gone to wake him up around 6.30 am. Shocked, she raised an alarm, following which her husband Avinash Bhatia rushed towards her. They informed the police about the incident. The police rushed the victim to the PGI, where he was declared brought dead. The body was then shifted to the Sector 16 Government Multi Specialty Hospital for an autopsy. |

Theft at bank official’s house
Chandigarh, July 16 Satinder Singh Gularia, a senior executive with the ICICI Bank. in a complaint lodged with the police, alleged that Rs 18,000 in cash, jewellery worth Rs 2.5 lakh to Rs 3 lakh and a few expensive gifts were stolen from his house. Gularia was away to Gurgaon from July 14. He came to know about the theft on his return to city today evening. A case has been registered in this regard. |

4 held for consuming liquor in public place
Chandigarh, July 16 The police has arrested Amit Midha, a resident of Ludhiana, Naveen Kumar, Jatinder Kumar and Naveen Kumar, all city residents, for allegedly consuming liquor at a public place in the wee hours here. Jagdish Rai Garg, a resident of Sector 32, reported to the police alleging that Harbir Singh, a resident of Sector 21-D, along with others, forcibly entered his residence and detained him in Phase 1, Industrial Area. The police has arrested the accused and a case of wrongful confinement, criminal trespassing and common intention has been registered against him at the Industrial Area police station.

Panchkula, July 16 A case has been registered at Sector 5 police station and the police is investigating. Aggarwal said that he had visited Pallavi Hotel last night after parking his car near the hotel. He said he was shocked to see his car missing from the parking after he returned from the hotel within few minutes. He said even though a police van was stationed near the parking, the thieves managed to take away his car. |

Car thief brought for questioning
Zirakpur, July 16 The accused, Subhash Saini, was produced in a Dera Bassi court today and was remanded in police custody for a day. The police had registered two separate cases against him. The police official stated that Subhash Saini was an accomplice of Baljit Singh, who was arrested last month from Baltana. He managed to escape from the Big Bazaar when the Baltana police team raided after getting the vital clues from Baljit. Baltana Chowki Incharge ASI Gurwant Singh stated that after stealing the cars, firstly he prepared the fake registration certificates on their names and sells them to customers on reasonable rates. “We have brought the accused on production warrant for interrogation as we are hopeful of getting more information regarding the thefts”, he added. |

12 cartons of liquor seized, occupants flee
Chandigarh, July 16 The police said Head Constable Ravinder Singh, posted in the police control room, lodged a complaint alleging that he signaled a Maruti Zen car (HR 51 M 8979) to stop near the Kali Bari Traffic Lights Point, Chandigarh, on Tuesday night. Its two unidentified occupants fled leaving the vehicle behind. During search, 12 cartons of liquor were seized. A case has been registered under the provisions of the Excise Act in this connection. Anuj Kumar, a resident of Maloya Colony, reported to the police alleging that Anish, Gollu and Rahul, whose address were not known to him, stabbed him in Maloya Colony on Wednesday and fled. They also threatened him of dire consequences before leaving. He was admitted to the Sector 16 Government Multi Specialty Hospital. A case of causing injuries, criminal intimidation and common intention has been registered in the Sector 39 police station.

Poor show by Chattisgarh eves
Chandigarh, July 16 Manipur’s Kamla and Reena Rai Devi netted two goals each. Reena drew the first blood in the 13th minute of the game, following second goal in the 16th minute by Ph Bina Devi. Just after the second goal, Reena again strike the ball in the goal in the 18th minute, Kamla added one more goal in the 39th minute thereby taking the lead to 4-0 at the end of the first half of the game. After the breather in the 47th minute, Kamla again netted a goal. While in the closing minutes of the game, Umavati and Kamla contributed one goal each in the 63rd and 73rd minutes, respectively. In another match of the day, Tripura defeated Punjab by 7-2 in the cluster VIII match. Janu Debbarama from Tripura scored a hat-trick to ensure win against Punjab. Chennai lad clinches singles title
Chandigarh, July 16 In the final match, GP Prajnesh defeated Suraj Beniwal of Haryana in straight sets 6-0, 6-1. While in the women’s singles category, Sharmada Balu beat Bhuvana Kalva from Andhra Pradesh 6-2, 6-3. On the other hand, Ajay Yadav and Gurinder Singh pocket the men’s doubles crown. Mumbai overpower city team in semis
Chandigarh, July 16 The city team failed to convert three penalty corners into goals, whereas the opponents successfully converted two out of four penalty corners into goals. The first goal of the match came through the stick of Mumbai forward Gursewak Singh in the sixth minute of the game through a penalty corner, meanwhile, the city team got the possession of the ball, but failed to cross the ball through the goalkeeper. After water break, Chandigarh goalkeeper Harjeet Singh was awarded yellow card by referee for his rough tackling in the penalty area. Taking full advantage of the situation, Gurusewak Singh again scored for the Mumbai team to read the score board 2-0 in the 50th minute of the game. The final goal of the game came before the finishing whistle in the 65th minute of the match. |
