Rain keeps 80 young golfers from teeing off
Chandigarh, July 5 Heavy overnight showers, which continued till late morning, forced the club management to postpone the tournament to October 11, much to the disappointment of boys and girls who had skipped school to participate in the first mega junior golf event organised by the Chandigarh Golf Club. The young participants had come from various districts of Punjab and also from Delhi. Most of them were accompanied by their parents. The kids were keen on testing their skills on the challenging Chandigarh greens. The club management was also eager to conduct the tournament. The organisers deferred a decision on postponing the tournament till afternoon, hoping the greens would be back in shape by the tee-off time of 1 pm. However, a final inspection of the course showed that fairways were wet and slushy. The greens had become very soft and would not have allowed good playing conditions. In fact, allowing the tournament in such conditions could have even damaged the course. The decision to postpone the tournament to October 11 came as a blow to young golfers. However, all was not lost. Seeing disappointment on the faces of the young golfers, club president Birinder Singh Gill invited the youngsters to a golf clinic by Arjuna awardee and Asian Tour winner Harmeet Kahlon. A national amateur champion for several years, Kahlon, who is also the director of the CGC Golf Academy, gave a presentation of the finer nuances of the game. They also received tips on putting, grain and line reading, use of teaching aids, hitting, mental routine, warm-up and physical stretching exercises from the international professional player. |
