The Queen’s baton for the Commonwealth Games is in the city. It is indeed a tribute to sportpersons from the region

There is a significant addition to the technological accomplishments of India. It doesn’t always need to be the multi-crore annual turnover of software developing IT companies; equally revenue generating IT outsourcing or space technology. Even the Queen’s baton made by Indians for the first Commonwealth Games in the country is a proud achievement!

And here’s why. The baton has a small screen whose colours change as per the flags of a particular country. It also has the GPS facility, which can help track it anywhere in India. Another addition is an inbuilt voice recorder meant to record messages of important personalities and also a camera to capture all celebrations. “These hi-tech provisions were added to the baton to increase the involvement of the public and send across a message to the world that India is technologically progressing,” says Col KS Banshtu, director and relay commander, Commonwealth Games.

One can also send in best wishes for the baton and the games via SMS. “It’s a novel concept to reach out to maximum people. Type Baton <space> your text message with the name and city, and SMS it to 53030,” he adds.

And the love for the country gets reflected through the crest of the baton, which is made up of different coloured sand found in India, “This was intentionally done to make people emotionally connect to the baton and the games.”

The usually hidden Queen’s message, which is read on the day of opening, is encrypted on the gold plating of the baton this time. “For the first time, the baton has travelled 70 countries and covered a distance of 1.70 kilometres. It has to be special in every way.”

The realisation of how special it is came after the real experience. Before this, Queen’s Baton was one of the important symbols of the Commonwealth Games, but wasn’t perceived as a medium that would unite people. Col. Banshtu, at a few metres distance from the Queen’s baton when it entered India through the Wagah border, could make out a few voices that were celebrating: “Hindustan Zindabad! India India! I have never seen people getting so patriotic before.” He and his team of 90 people are visiting different cities with the baton.

On Saturday evening when the baton will be handed over to Milkha Singh at Sector 16 stadium, Chandigarh, Col Banshtu expects the same jubilation. “People from different political parties have also celebrated the coming of the Queen’s Baton to India. Sports is common to all, irrespective of contrasting ideologies or religion.” He says the baton is special for Chandigarh as the city has produced many successful sportspersons. Something every Chandigarhian is proud of!

Who else can better explain the feeling of holding a baton than our very own Flying Sikh — Milkha Singh? “It’s a feel similar to that of winning the gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in 1958. The games are being held in India for the first time and it is an award for Indians,” he says.

And what’s the feeling of being the chosen one? “I feel proud and elated to do the honours in the city. It is the recognition of the hardwork that I had done years back. It shows that people of India value their sportspersons.” For Milkha, the baton has a larger purpose to it. “It should inspire people to help their children take up sports. And more than them, it should inspire the administration and authorities concerned to make facilities for sports available to the general public.”

On his wish list is a racetrack in the city, which can help aspiring athletes. “Be it cricket, lawn tennis or football, running is required to win any game. It’s the backbone of any sport. A race track and athletes would help raise the standard of any sport.”

As for the preparation for Commonwealth Games, he feels the authorities have limited their concern to just the infrastructure at the cost of players. He feels that quality athletes can only be produced if parents give equal weightage to sports. He cites the example of Tiger Woods in golf, Ramesh Krishnan in tennis and Yuvraj Singh in cricket, all of whom were well supported by their parents.

The baton is an award for the city and Milkha knows why. “The city is either known for its architecture or successful sportspersons. The baton should motivate people to put their children into sports.”

Milkha is also for a fully equipped sports academy for the city, “Where all games are available to youngsters as per their interest; where there are enough coaches and equipment,” he signs off. 

Romantic parody

This week we once again have a solitary release. No one seems to want to be up against a big film from Dharma productions, Karan Johar's home production house, which has not always been able to churn out the hits. The way in which his film Kurbaan which released solitarily, prior to his own directorial venture MNIK, tanked, is a case in point. The current film under review is directed by Punit Malhotra, yet another KJo protégé and has all it's pre-publicity hype concentrating on its entertainment possibilities. It may not be up there with the best romantic films of all time but I must say it provides enough fun popcorn moments to carry you through its slightly elongated runtime.

Film: I Hate Luv storys

Cast: Imran khan, Sonam Kapoor, Samir Dattani, Samir Soni, Bruna Abdullah, Ketki Dave, Anju Mahendra.

Director: Punit Malhotra

A love story that tries hard not to be stereotypical - Punit Malhotra's I hate luv storys subverts generic clichés and turns accepted tenets of romance on it's head. It's also a parody on the industry that seems obsessed with love stories. The storyline though is pretty non-existent. The plot exists of smartly manufactured 'situations' that are strung together by wispy threads constituting several subplots. It's a romantic comedy for sure but the mechanics at play are different from the run-of-the-mill.

Jay (Imran) meets Simran (Sonam) in a cinema and they feel an attraction towards each other. But Simran is more or less engaged to the perfect guy Raj (Samir Dattani) while Jay is too much of a 'love' hater to make much out of a stray attraction. Then Simran comes to work for Jay's boss Veer Kapoor (Samir Soni), the foremost romance director of the film industry and things start hotting up. First they

are just friends, then Simran falls in love with Jay, gets rejected and then when Jay is finally ready to acknowledge his love for Simran, she rejects him. The script turns around conventionally accepted filmy truisms of romance. What hitherto had been a male preserve in a romance gets transferred to the female. So while Simran manages to get on with her life and make practical decisions despite being emotionally suckered by humiliation and rejection, Jay is shown as weeping copious tears, baring his heart to his mother and also gets ridiculed for behaving in girlie fashion when it's his turn to get rejected.

The relationship between Simran and Raj is typically Ken and Barbie. He is good-looking, has a solid well-paying job and follows the norm (read cliché) where romance is concerned. They wear the same colours, love the same things and get so boring in their 'together' choices that it takes Jay's entry into their lives to force them to evaluate their own antiseptic relationship.

The discontent is verbalised but visually there appears to be a disconnect. We get to know all this mainly from the superbly written dialogues and not from the visual plotting. The plotting is not sharp enough. The so-called fights between Simran and Raj appear to be mere expressions of minor discontent and not supportive of a dramatic shift in affection towards Jay. But the parallel plotlines bring in greater rewards. Veer's attempt to make the mushiest romance of all-time titled Pyar Pyar Pyar with reigning matinee superstars shores up the humour nicely. Veer appears to be a cross between Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Yash Chopra with character traits of the former and directorial savoir faire of the latter. His antics thereof are consistently chuckle-worthy.

The second half turnaround where Jay starts to feel his loss appears to be similar to the one in but it's not as convincing. It appears manipulative. The run in towards the climax also appears rushed. So much time was spent in establishing the stereotypes that the development becomes haphazard and the runtime gets extended to almost unbearable limits.

Vishal-Shekar's music also tends to be a drag. Imran Khan and Sonam Kapoor make sincerity a cornerstone of their respective performances. They appear likable and believable. The chemistry between them may not be entirely palpable but the freshness of their pairing and the visible vibes that they share translates well on screen. Despite the lack of a credible story and the predictable ending, this film is worth a watch mainly because of the appropriate candy-coloured cinematography, reams of sparkling wit, great comedic timing and humorously edged performances provide for some consistent popcorn styled entertainment!

One more time

Film icon Kamal Haasan will wear the director's hat for a third time in his 50-year-long career even as younger daughter Akshara steps into the film industry as assistant to Rahul Dholakia. Akshara does not want to follow elder sister Shruthi's example and don the grease paint, said Haasan who was here for the inauguration of an retrospective of his films.

In his career spanning 5 decades, Haasan has only helmed two films, Hey Ram (2000) and Veeru Mandi (2004), and he is raring to call the shots again, having already zeroed in on prospective scripts.

"I will direct more films. Many young actors want me to direct and guide them. There are so many actors, people and talents, who haven't got their moment of glory and if possible I'd like to help all of them. There are some scripts I am looking at," said Haasan.

The 55-year-old, who won his first National Award in 1960 at the age of five for his debut in Kalathur Kannamma, said that both his daughters are fiercely independent and make their own decisions. "I don't interfere in their career decisions, I give advice when it's asked for. Akshara has started as an assistant on a film, though it's not a part of my production house," said Haasan of his 19-year-old daughter.

Akshara and Shruthi are Haasan's daughters with actress Sarika, who separated from the actor in 2002.Haasan had flown in to attend the inauguration from Italy where he is shooting with Madhavan and Trisha for the film Manmadhan Ambu. — PTI

Even though Twitter seems to be the flavour of the season for Bollywood denizens, actress Kareena Kapoor has launched her own website. Her official website www.kareenakapoor.me is now up and fans are already thronging the site. The site is inventively designed by Kareena and is easy to navigate, a spokesperson for the actress said in a statement issued here.

On the home page, Kareena has written Post-it notes for her fans. These notes will be updated regularly. "This is my own site, my own space. I like the idea of leaving Post-it notes for my fans. I have created a special fan book where fans can write to me directly," Kareena says. "Also, 1GOAL campaign which uses the power of football to ensure that education for all of which I am a part, will reach a number of people who are not familiar with Indian cinema. Shoot at site

Bollywood stars Ajay Devgn and Bipasha Basu along with director Priyadarshan are in Diu for shooting of Akrosh.

The actors and film director arrived at Diu airport yesterday and are likely to stay in the union territory for six days for the shoot, Diu Collector office sources said.

Diu is famous for its Nagwa Beach and historic places like Nayda Cage. Sources said the cast and crew has started shooting of the film from today.

However, it was not immediately clear if other actors from movie Akshay Khanna, Paresh Rawal, Raima Sen and Sameera Reddy too would be here for the film shoot, sources added. — PTI

Hollywood actress Lindsay Lohan, who turned 24 Friday, claims she was attacked by a waitress while she was enjoying a night out at a restaurant. Lohan claims she was attacked "for no reason", reports a website.

"A waitress just hit me - punched me for no reason," Lohan posted on micro-blogging site Twitter. However, Lohan had no wild plans for her birthday owing to an alcohol-monitoring bracelet that she has to wear as part of her probation for driving under the influence of alcohol. "I mean there's not much you can do with a monitoring bracelet and no money," one of Lohan's friends was quoted as saying. She is due to appear in court Tuesday, where it shall be determined how well she is adhering to the court-imposed restrictions. — IANS

American actor Tom Cruise could reprise his role of Maverick from his 1986 classic Top Gun. Top Gun producer Jerry Bruckheimer and 47-year-old Cruise have already tried to follow up the 1986 hit, reports a publication. "We were recently approached again to start talking about it but, you know, nothing yet," Bruckheimer said.

 "We kicked around some ideas because the aviation community has completely changed since we made the movie. So we have to find a way in and how to incorporate the Maverick character into it," he added. — ANI

Million dollar mansion

Mel Gibson has sold his sprawling Connecticut estate for 16 million pounds and earned a massive 9.8 million pounds profit. The Tudor-style mansion has been in the market for sale since 2007, reports a publication. The actor bought the property in Greenwich, Connecticut, for 6.2 million pounds in 1994 while he was married to now-estranged wife Robyn.

According to a website, the final figure is 10.3 million pounds less than the original asking price of 26.3 million pounds, but it still makes a multi-million pound profit for Gibson on his original investment. The property boasts of a five-horse stable, a log cabin and a swimming pool. — ANI

An upbeat crowd amid loud beats of music, traditional dances, lots of stalls, bioscopes and rides for children — this mela has all elements of a traditional fair with only one added attraction dedicated to the king of fruits — Mango.

The ongoing Mango Mela at Pinjore Gardens is the 19th such fair that brings together mango lovers from the region.  From deep green to sindoori yellow, the mango stalls have different varieties in varied shapes and sizes. Shares Ravneet Gill, a student from Chandigarh, “I am a huge fan of mangoes and so is my family. I am here with my parents, cousins and friends to celebrate the mango season.” Huge mango cut-outs spread over the garden are the hot backdrops for some photo sessions.

With a total of 3,060 entries, including 410 varieties of mango and 10 types of products, this fair brings together mango growers from Himachal Pradesh Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Rajsathan and Uttar Pradesh. With traditional as well as hybrid varieties of mangos and varied products, the fair offers mango growers technical know-how, good variety seeds and tools. “The response to this mela is really great. We have already seen some 40 new varieties of mango,” says Rajesh Joon, media in-charge, Mango Mela.

“Our effort is to reach out to mango growers and lovers in the region, and provide assistance to those who want to invest in this profitable business,” says Rajesh.

“Probably it’s the season; the variety and quality of mangoes that we have got this year is much better than the previous year,” says Satish Narula, Punjab Agricultural University representative at Chandigarh. “This fair provides an excellent platform for identification of new hybrid varieties. After testing, mango growers can tap domestic as well as international markets for business opportunities,” says Narula, who has been judging the competition since its inspection.

Mango Mela, which is an annual fair, offers colourful cultural programmes as well. If it’s the traditional ‘dhol nagara’ at the entrance, it’s the traditional Rajasthani, Haryanvi and Punjabi artistes spread over different levels who entertain the crowds. The stage in the backdrop of a haveli reverberates to traditional folk music from Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan.  The performance by Punjab police troupe was a huge hit with the crowd. 

Rangoli, face-painting and slogan-writing competitions kept children busy while the evening saw people participating in a game of Tambola. And Day 2 (Sunday) has more interesting competitions in store — Mango-eating, fancy dress, mehandi and Tambola. A special demonstration on preparation of mango products will be the special highlight of the day.

With the advent of electronic media, Punjabi folk pop music has been showcased worldwide during the last two decades, but this unprecedented boom has its merits and demerits, claims noted Punjabi lyricist-singer Balbir Suffi.

Trained in classical music for five years by professor Bhupinder Singh of Kirana Gharana, Suffi left the job of a junior electronics engineer to pursue his passion for music. Credited with six music albums, for which he had also written the lyrics, Suffi attributes his success to his wife Shivani, a teacher, and daughter Smiksha who is also a prolific singer.

Suffi has performed extensively in Europe during his 16 tours, besides visiting USA and Canada four times each during the last ten years. Back after a series of programmes held in leading cities of Canada on his fourth tour to the country, Suffi was featured in a ‘Ru Ba Ru’ programme organised by Shangara Singh Bhullar under the aegis of Punjabi Patrakar association at the Chandigarh Press club on Saturday. He shares a few notes.

Q: If you sing Punjabi songs penned down by you, why do you claim to be a Sufi singer?

A: In fact, I carry the name of my village Suffian, from where I completed my schooling. I am just a Punjabi singer but with a difference, as I am strong proponent of saaf suthri gayakai for which organisations in UK have given me a gold medal.

Q: How does your training in vocal classical music help you when you do not perform in that genre?

A: It is essential, rather mandatory, for any singer to read literature of his land and learn classical music. Any untrained singer can win applause due to a good voice and hardwork, but it will be shortlived.

Q: What is concept of an ideal lyricist and a singer?

A: Any writer who gives a meaningful message to society with his lyrics and any singer who has cultivated the sense to embellish a ‘sur’ with perfection are ideal.
