7 B’desh nationals nabbed in Ambala
Ambala, July 1 Earlier, the police had arrested six Bangladeshi robbers on June 19 from a deserted house at a local colony and recovered a pistol, live cartridges and sharp-edged weapons from them. During police interrogation, they confirmed their involvement in several robberies at Kurukshetra, Yamunanagar, Ambala, Ghaziabad and Delhi recently. The sources said the kingpin of the gang Md Kabir, from Bangladesh, said the gang members used to collect garbage and waste papers from the colonies during day time and were involved in robberies during night. Shashank Anand said the police had recovered two pistols, one revolver, 18 live cartridges, three knives and several tools from them. He said they entered India illegally through a Kolkata-based agent Motiar, who had been arrested by the Ambala police after interrogation. Anand said there were a large number of Bangladeshi intruders in the country involved in criminal activities. “Now, we hope to crack several high-profile cases that took place in the past six months in the state.” |

Residents block traffic against erratic power supply
Bassi Pathana, July 1 The protesters raised slogans against the government as well as the electricity board. The people parked their trolleys on the road and sat on dharna even in the heavy rain. The drama continued for hours, the passengers and commuters had to face great difficulty. The police led by DSP Rajwinder Singh Sohal cordoned the protesters and tried their best to lift the blockade. The traffic was converted through rural-link roads. XEN Amardeep Singh reached the spot and assured the protesters that the loose wires passing through their fields would be repaired within two days and the regular power would be ensured in the rural area with in three days. He promised to bifurcate the power feeders of the rural and urban area. With the intervention of the DSP, the dharna was lifted. 1 booked for breach of trust
Zirakpur, July 1 In his complaint to the police, Amit stated that he went to Zirakpur market for his personnel work and asked Vijay Kumar, who is living on the first floor of the house, to take care of his house. When he returned from the market, he found two laptops and a passport missing. He suspected that the accused had run away with his laptops and the passport. Thieves decamped with taps and a radio after breaking into Nafisa Agro Farm situated on the Zirakpur-Patiala Highway. Pritam Singh, a resident of Mohali, reported to the police that he was sleeping at the farm on June 29 when the incident took place. Next day, he found that the windowpanes were broken and things were scattered. He claimed that the taps and a radio were missing. A case has been registered against unidentified persons. |

2 killed in road mishaps
Rajpura, July 1 Hardyal was going towards his village on a motorcycle when he was hit by a speeding unidentified SUV on the Patiala-Rajpura road. He was declared brought dead at the Civil Hospital. Dharminder too got killed in a similar manner when he was crushed by an unidentified vehicle on the Rajpura-Chandigarh road. Two different cases have been registered and the bodies have been handed over to their family members after conducting a post mortem at the Civil Hospital. |

‘VIP’ violators headache for traffic cops

Zirakpur, July 1 According to sources, the challans include wrong entry, helmet-less rides, triple ridding, leaving vehicles in the “no parking” zones, driving without wearing seat belts, drunken driven and driving without documents. “There is no denying the fact that violation of traffic rules is rampant in the town. Driving without helmets tops the chart of traffic rules violations along with wrong parking. However, we are continuously trying to check the violations by laying check points and deploying policemen at various points”, a senior police official said. Giving details of the challans from June 3 to June 29, sources in the traffic police said about 222 persons were challaned for not wearing headgears, 42 challans were issued for wrong parking and 26 challans were issued for overloading vehicles. Other miscellaneous violations included not using of seat-belts, triple riding, using pressure horns, blue beacon and using ‘press’ stickers without permission. Use of pressure horn, black filming, besides drunken driving and driving without documents also led to issuance of challans, the sources added. A cop on the condition of anonymity said even before they could issue a challan, the erring driver would ring up their ‘top links’ and try to pressurise them. DSP (Traffic) GS Mann stated that no violator would be spared regardless of his status or link. He said the traffic police would establish more checkpoints to curb the menace of rash and negligent driving. |

Farmers fear auction of 5,200 kanal land
Dera Bassi, July 1 They held a protest rally in village and requested the Government of India to intervene and provide them justice. Farmers threatened agitation if they were not provided justice and said they had been cultivating 5,200 kanal for the past five decades that was allotted to them under the consolidation scheme. They alleged that now state government was trying to occupy the same land. Farmers informed that this land case was pending in the court of director panchyat and rural development Punjab, but DDPO district development and panchyat officer, Mohali, was trying to hold auction. Farmers also raised the issue with Punjab Chief Minister, who assured them justice. They submitted memorandum to SDM Dera Bassi. Meanwhile, DDPO Kulawant Singh said under Section 7 of the Punjab Village Common Land Act, 1961, village panchyat is the owner of the land and that its auction would be held on June 30. However, he expressed ignorance regarding the pending land case. “If the case is pending in any court then villagers could present proof of the pending case and the auction would be cancelled,” he added. |

Canal Waters
Fatehgarh Sahib, July 1 Due to this irregular distribution, farmers of Punjab were now finding it hard to get water for their own fields. There was hardly any canal water for irrigation in Punjab despite having three major rivers here, he said. Nearly 13 lakh tubewells were been pumping water for irrigation purpose. “We will fight the legal and political battle to get justice for farmers of Punjab”, he said, adding that it was the legal right of Punjab to get water before it was given to other states. |

Palsora. The incident took place when Jagir Singh was walking towards the Zirakpur bus stand. The investigating officer stated that a passer-by informed the highway patrolling team and he was rushed to the Dera Bassi civil hospital where doctors declared him brought dead. 3 held for drinking liquor in public
Chandigarh, July 1 In another incident, the police has arrested Sukhwinder Singh, a resident of Ambala, from near Himachal Sarai, Sector 24, for the similar offence. The police said three separate cases under the Excise Act have been registered against the accused in the Sector 3 and Sector 11 police stations.
Liquor seized
The police has arrested Amit, a resident of Phase 1, Ram Darbar, from near the Sector 52 bridge yesterday and recovered 12 bottles of country-made liquor from his possession. A case under The Excise Act has been registered at the Sector 36 police station.
Fraud
Surjit Singh of HDFC Bank, Sector-35, Chandigarh, has alleged that some unknown person has taken away a bank draft for Rs 2.67 lakh from the bank. The accused had opened an account at the SBI, Sector 31, by producing fake documents and deposited the draft. A case under Sections 419, 420, 467, 468, 471 and 120-B of the IPC has been registered.

An auto-rickshaw driver and a woman passenger were injured after being hit by an over-speeding car near Phase 1, Industrial Area, on Wednesday. 3 held for firing at dhaba owner
Panchkula, July 1 It was around 11.20 p.m. when the accused quarrelled with staff of the Hot Fist dhaba in the market of Sector 16 and beat up the owner. One of them fired with his rifle in the air while fleeing from the spot. The victim informed the police, which managed to nab them. A rifle, cartridges and a Scorpio, was recovered from the accused.

Chandigarh, July 1 The cavalcade of more than 30 vehicles, carrying the Baton entered the city from Mohali Phase VI and went ahead to Sector 11 from where it turned towards the Chandigarh Golf Club. The cavalcade reached its destination, Chandi Mandir around 6 pm, where the Baton would remain till July 3 evening. Earlier, taking no risk, the Chandigarh Police has deputed about 1,100 cops on the entire route of the QBR in the city. Even the Army personnel and the CRPF were deputed to avoid any untoward incident. SP HS Doon, under whose supervision the security arrangements have been made, said, “We do not want to take any risk during the period, the QBR is scheduled to remain here.” On July 3, the Baton will be taken back to Chandigarh where it will be welcomed by the Chandigarh Administration along with the city based illustrious sportspersons, including Flying Sikh Milkha Singh, Kapil Dev and Abhinav Bindra, at Matka Chowk around 5.30 pm. “Arriving of the Baton in the city is a proud moment for us. We have elaborate arrangements to make the event a grand success and memorable one on July 3. Chandigarh, July 1 The championship is scheduled to begin from July 8 to 15 at Bangalore, Karnataka. The selection trials will be held in the following age groups for both boys and girls: Junior: Group-I (15 to 17 years): born in 1993, 1994 and 1995. Group-II (13 to 14 years): born in 1996 and 1997. Sub-junior: Group-III (11 and 12 years): born in 1998 and 1999. Group-IV (9 and 10 years): born in 2000 and 2001. The selection will be made for different swimming events of sub-junior and junior categories. The interested swimmers should get their names registered with coach Jasjit Kaur or Tarun Negi at the Yoga Centre Swimming Pool, Sector 23, on or before July 2 up to 6 pm.The boys and girls, who have been participating from other states during the previous years, will have to procure “no objection certificate” from the respective state associations before the selection trials. |
City girl to represent country in chess meet
Chandigarh, July 1 Tarini is the only player from the region, who will fly to China, along with other four girls in her age group, who are being selected by the All-India Chess Federation (AICF) from other parts of the country. According to sources, before the championship, Tarini, a Class IV student from Sacred Heart Convent School, would be trained at the national coaching camp to be held in Jalgaon (Maharashtra). Earlier, Tarini had bagged bronze medal in the Asian Youth Chess Championship (U-8) held at New Delhi. The achievement made her the first chess player in the region, who had podium finish in the championship. Tarini started playing the game at the age of five under coach Naveen Bansal. Dr Vipnesh Bhardwaj, joint secretary, (AICF) and honorary secretary, Chandigarh Chess Association, wished her luck. |
