Twists in tale over dog ownership

PU dental college denied DCI affiliation
Chandigarh, June 29
The Dental Council of India (DCI), which regulates dental education in the country, has rejected extension of affiliation to Panjab University’s Institute of Dental Sciences, currently facing a faculty crunch, for the new academic session. The four-year-old institute, located in PU’s south campus in Sector 25, presently has a student intake capacity of 100 every year.

Medicity a remote possibility now

Despite efforts by a section of the Chandigarh Administration to revive the ambitious medicity, the project seems to be a remote possibility in the present circumstances in the backdrop of the controversies surrounding the mega projects, particularly land acquisition.And, what is more worrying is the fact that this rise defies the national trend where the IMR has declined from 57 per live 1000 births in 2006 to 53 in 2008-2009.

The Chandigarh Administration yesterday claimed the “Z” security cover provided to Beant Singh case judge RS Sondhi has not been withdrawn. The assertion came just about a week after Sondhi’s representation on the withdrawal of “Z” security cover was placed on the judicial side.

Admn set to welcome Queen’s Baton Relay on July 3

The Chandigarh Administration claimed to have made elaborate arrangements to welcome the Queen’s Baton Relay on July 3.The city-based eminent sportsperson, including Flying Sikh Milkha Singh, cricketer of the Millennium Kapil Dev and country’s lone individual Olympic gold medallist Abhinav Bindra will carry the baton during the relay here.

Hiccups push deadline to 2011

Faced with operational hiccups, the construction of the rail link between Chandigarh and Ludhiana looks to figure on the list of those projects that have been hanging fire for quite some time. The project, which was to be completed this year, will now see the light of the day only by the end of 2011, as claimed by the railway authorities.

MC to propose another dumping site

The Chandigarh Municipal Corporation will propose another chunk of 100-acre land as the dumping ground at Dadu Majra as the landfill site to dump the city’s garbage. The proposal will be tabled in the house meeting scheduled on June 30.

UT to recruit 1,200 teachers

With a view to upgrading its infrastructure to implement the Right to Education in letter and spirit, the UT Administration is set to recruit 1,200 teachers, besides constructing about 40 new schools.

Two cops, one accused, receive bullet injuries

The Rajpura police today arrested three alleged criminals after a cross firing near Chahlan village in Samrala. Two cops and one of the accused received bullet injuries during the firing.

Two kids saved from drowning

An incident of drowning was reported near Longowqal College, Dera Bassi, today when two children were brought to the hospital, here.According to information, the victims were children of labourers and were identified as Shiva, who is 5 years old, and Gulshan who is10.

Encroachment on land for judges’ houses
HC gives Haryana, UT two weeks to find solution
Chandigarh, June 29
Less than six months after the Punjab and Haryana High Court issued notice to Haryana for alleged encroachment on land meant for judges’ houses in Sector 19, Justice Permod Kohli has given two weeks’ time to the state and the UT for settling the issue.

Vacancies in Debt Recovery Tribunal
PIL wants HC to intervene
Chandigarh, June 29
Vacancies in the Debt Recovery Tribunal (DRT) at Chandigarh were yesterday brought to the Punjab and Haryana High Court’s notice by a Patiala resident.In a petition filed in public interest, Chander Shekhar Jolly claimed the tenure of the officer presiding over DRT’s second Bench came to an end in December last and additional charge was handed over to the presiding officer holding court at Delhi.

Juvenile surrenders
Chandigarh, June 29
A juvenile today surrendered before a local court in a murder case of a 19-year-old migrant from Bihar who was stabbed to death by three Nepalese on April 24. The victim, Pintu, had some dispute over the payment for a mobile phone.

Two held for snatching
Chandigarh, June 29
The police claimed to have arrested two snatchers here today.The accused have been identified as Updeep Singh from Faridkot and Pritam Singh from Moga.The third accused, identified as Kaifi from Kotkapura, managed to give cops the slip.

Delhi clinch T-20 title

Delhi defeated Haryana by six wickets to clinch the title for Youth Cricket Council League (U-15) Hot Weather T-20 Tournament, at Sector 40 here today.Batting first Haryana team was all out for 92 runs in the stipulated 20 overs. Ankit scored 35 runs, whereas Pardeep contributed 26 to the total of the team.
