Revival of unused playgrounds in city
Chandigarh, June 25 Deepinder Singh, secretary of the LIC Cricket Club, says he is willing to take over other playgrounds for their proper upkeep. “We have so many playgrounds in the city that are not fit for sports due to their poor maintenance. As these can be developed into top-class facilities, we are ready to take over and revive these,” says Deepinder Singh adding that many others private players like him are ready for the “job”. On experimental basis, the UT education department had handed over a playground of Government Model Senior Secondary School, Timber Market, Sector 26, around two years ago to Deepinder Singh. The ground was then a dumping ground. Deepinder, through his resources, spent several lakhs to convert it into a sprawling cricket ground. “The place where people once used to throw garbage now witnesses over 100 budding cricketers, mainly from slums, hone their cricketing skills under the supervision of three coaches. And we do not charge even a single penny from the trainees,” claims Deepinder Singh. Notably, one of the key matches of the JP Atray Memorial Cricket Tournament was held on this ground last year. International cricketers Wasim Jaffar and Rohit Sharma were part of the teams in the match. “I want to convert the ground into a regional coaching centre of the Punjab Cricket Association. The administration should give us free hand here”, says Deepinder. |
