Small, with big impact
It’s no more just a family thing, the small cars have become sturdy, steady and stylish
Neha Walia

Now that’s called driving yourself crazy! Zooming, screeching, extreme flips and jumps…a drive down the same old roads turned into a high adrenaline affair like that on a racing track, of course, while away from the madding crowd. And guess what? Your best bet may not be a rugged SUV but a small, ‘family’ car. What? It doesn’t match the standards? Think again, or be a witness to the crowd pulling live demonstrations of some of the most anticipated luxury cars in smaller segment.

Going by the trend, or call it a high-energy marketing effort, most automobile brands are busy turning their small cars into small wonders. How? By promoting them as rough and tough mean machines, which can provide thrill equally as they provide luxury. The most recent example was the event organised by Volkswagen to test the limits of their luxury car, Polo. In a display of power and thrill, Ronny Wechselberger, the Danish Peugeot Spider Cup champion and third position holder in Formula 3 Germany trophy, came behind the wheels performing some breathtaking stunts. But the star performer wasn’t actually him, it was Polo.

“It’s a question of quality and design now. Even with small segment cars, the emphasis is on their features and the optimum advantage. You don’t have to buy a racing car to experience a powerful performance; a normal car can do all those things. Though not at the same level, but then not everybody’s a racer as well,” says Ronny. The nation wide campaign to bring out the thrill factor in Polo will cover all major cities like Mumbai, Chandigarh, Delhi et al and promote the car as a tough machine and not just a family car.

Ford Figo test drive flag off.

In a similar attempt, Ford Figo’s test drive was held, with an off-road route map from Chandigarh to Ludhiana. The aim was to put focus on the characteristics of the car, both on-road and off-road. Packaging Figo with its driving characteristics in terms of size, power trains and interiors as well.

Similarly, the new blue-eyed boy from the Maruti Suzuki den, Wagon R, has R Madhavan endorsing the car in a ‘Neo’ from Matrix style. “There are layers to the A2 segment cars with different gradations. The toughness of a car is the reliability and cost of ownership factor. Wagon r falls in eth mid A2 segnment which means it’s a mini SUV,” says a spokesperson from Maruti Suzuki India. And so, when Madhavan promotes it in a Matrix style, customers are impressed.

Mercedes Benz, premium luxury car brand too joined the bandwagon by organising the star drive while launching CGI technology in its latest C-class model. Combining essential elements of driving with road situations and highlighting the safety features, the Stardrive emphasised on the technological advancements and the dynamics of the vehicle; performance in conditions off-road and on-road conditions. The participants were made aware about the tangible benefits of key safety technologies like Pro-Engineering Package, Airmatic, etc. “The latest technology offers improved output, optimised consumption and reduced carbon imprint to top it with a more pleasurable drive, more sporty and quick. The brand focuses on a luxurious experience, with the safety intact,” says Piyush Arora, director technical, Mercedes Benz India. And so, the star drive made the participants aware about the tangible benefits of key safety technologies like Pro-Engineering Package, Airmatic, in its latest models.

So, while you drive in luxury, you know these cars offer much more!

Day to pass by
It’s June 21. So, how do you plan to spend the longest day of the year?
Manpriya Khurana

Summer solstice, is a term derived from the Latin words sol and sistere meaning…oh well, how does it matter. The fact of the matter is the Earth’s axis is tilted towards the sun, the moral of the story is, today’s the longest day of the year, which means the sun will set late. So eat, snooze, play, pray…whatever it is that can be done in a day.

We’re talking India here! The worldwide interpretation of the annual event has varied connotations in each culture. Read up on the significance, history, holidays, festivals, superstition, rituals, anything everything that the activity can lead to, especially in the incredible India.

Astronomy junkies, science geeks, curious Jacks and Jills…visit the Jantar Mantar and do some star, sun, sky gazing with an astronomical purpose.

Read up on the ten things to do when you have nothing to do. If you belong to the brigade that already has nothing to do, chances are you’ll have more time doing nothing! While reading, circle out the things that can be done in minutes.

Chances are, it’s going to be hotter out there, add to it the summer solstice psychology factor; do everything it takes to keep the heat at bay. Splash around in a plastic kiddy pool, make Popsicles in your freezer, make a smoothie, and run around the sprinklers, you get the picture.

Beer guzzlers hurray, one more excuse for one more chilled mug.

It’s a long day, something that everyone wishes with each day; more time at hand. Snooze around, laze about, extend the afternoon siesta, lie low, while away, loiter, just be.

Spend more time on the Internet, plug in the earphones, listen to some music, and make a CD of your favourite songs titled “The background score of my life.”

No beaches anywhere near here, so no sand, that only means no surfing, only lots of sun. Don’t let geography get in the way of sheer summer fun. Dress up in summary best, take a swing at the parks, go out or stay at home, play scrabble, pictionary, Othello, Chinese checkers, carom, snakes and ladders, hop skotch…with family and friends in tow.

What difference does a couple of minutes make? Just another day, everyday’s the same, “let the sun take its own course”, meanwhile continue as it is, don’t bother. One need not play summer for a Happy Summer Solstice!

Inspirational tale
Mayank Mishra pays his father a tribute with his book Karma Ka Pujari
SD Sharma

Phool murjhate hain, alfaaz nahin murjhate, Duur jaana hai, bazurgon ki duayen le jaa…" As mentioned in our old epics, seeking the blessings of parents at any auspicious occasion is considered propitious for any generation and does not depend on the recently coined Father's day. But the young city journalist, Mayank Mishra came out with an altogether innovative way of paying a unique tribute to his father late GC Mishra by authoring a book, Karma ka Pujari. It was released on the Fathers day at the book release function held at the Post Graduate Government college-11 on Sunday.

Performing the release ceremony, the chief guest Pawan Kumar Bansal, Union Cabinet minister for Parliament affairs and water resources observed that it is not just a gift purchased from market or just another book but a reflection of love, affection and gratitude expressed by a son, a rarity indeed.

Mayank's endeavour of writing the book in a year deserves to be appreciated. Among those who shared their memorable moments of long association with GC Mishra on the occasion were Justice Suryakant, , Panjab and Haryana High Court, KN Pathak, former VC, PU, Madhu Chitkara, pro-chancellor, Chitkara University and Shyam Sunder, principal, Govt College, Sector-11 while deliberating on the significance of Father's day.

Divulging on the inspiration and content of the book author Mayank Mishra, senior city journalist said that the book Karma Ka Pujari is a biography of his father, late GC Mishra. "It is a sharing of the striking qualities of generosity and wisdom I relished and imbibed from my father who expired last year."

The book has 24 chapters delineating his life's elemental life experiences and achievements. "Not only me, but those who happened to know him laud his resolve, conviction and what he achieved inspite of coming from a humble background. Born and raised in the village, Pandypur near Ballia in Uttar Pradesh, he made it to the IIT Kanpur with distinction doing proud to his father, a schoolteacher and poet Pandit Surya Dev Mishra.

Before Joining PU, he had served as a lecturer at BITS, Pilani. He had taught at PU for 24 years and retired in July 2005. The book mentions about the hard work done by Mishra throughout his life. One chapter of the book is devoted to his simplicity and modesty, the only professor using a bicycle in the modern university campus flooded by cars.

Keeping alive the family legacy of writing, Mayank Mishra took to writing in newspapers when he was in class 10. "My forthcoming book is about the life of a media person, ground realities and demanding career in journalism, which allures many who drift into the profession," adds Mayank Mishra.

Spice up
Beauty care

Turmeric (haldi) is a part of our traditional beauty aids and has been in use since the ancient times. In fact, it has become a part of Indian wedding ceremonies and other rituals. During the ancient times, turmeric used to be added to body packs or 'ubtan' due to its skin beautifying and antiseptic properties. It also helps to soften and brighten the skin. Used over a period of time, it also helps to remove tan and lighten skin colour.

Turmeric can easily be used for home beauty care:

To remove tan: Add a pinch of turmeric to curd and apply daily on the face. Wash it off after 20 minutes

As a body pack: Mix besan (gram flour) with curd and a pinch of turmeric into a paste. Apply on the arms and legs three times a week. Wash it off after half an hour.

For facial hair: Apply a paste of turmeric powder and milk and rub this on the skin with a circular motion. It is said to discourage facial hair over a period of time, but it may leave a slight yellowish colour on the skin.

To minimise stretch marks: First apply olive oil and massage it on the areas. Then mix besan, yogurt and turmeric and apply on the area. Wash it off after half an hour.

Antiseptic neem

Neem can easily be used as a home remedy for skin and hair care, not only to prevent problems, but also to soothe and cure.

Take a handful of neem leaves and simmer in five cups of water over a very low fire. Leave overnight. Next morning, strain and wash face with the water. Apply paste of neem leaves on pimples/rash.

Neem leaf infusions can be used to wash the skin and hair. First boil water and add the neem leaves to hot water. Cover and let it stand in the water overnight. Next day, strain the water and use it to wash the face and hair. The water can also be poured as a last rinse on the body. A paste of neem leaves can be applied, for pimples, acne, boils, heat rashes and prickly heat. In cases of dandruff and itching of the scalp, neem leaf infusions are very helpful. Use the infusion as a last rinse, after washing the hair.

Neem can also be used with oil for head massage. Heat 200 gms of pure coconut or sesame seed (til) oil. Take a handful of neem leaves and add it to the oil. Let it stand in the oil for about ten days, allowing it to remain in the sun during this time. Then strain the leaves and keep the oil for use. This is a preventive treatment for rashes, itching and other scalp conditions, including dandruff. It relieves itching and prevents scalp infections.

Neem can be used in scrubs for oily skins. The leaves should be dried and powdered and then added to wheat bran (choker) or oatmeal. Add a little rose water and use it as a scrub, rubbing it gently on the skin. It helps to reduce oil and keep the skin free from pimples and spots. For oily skin, add a few drops of lemon juice to neem leaf infusion and apply on the face. Wash it off after 20 minutes. This also helps to reduce oil and prevent skin problems.

Soothing sandalwood

Sandalwood has an antiseptic and germicidal effect. Both the oil and the paste have been used in healing, as tonics, as well as local applications. The paste has a cooling effect and was widely used to relieve prickly heat and other skin conditions. The tradition of applying sandalwood on the forehead developed due to its cooling effect. The fragrance of sandalwood is also said to have a calming effect on the mind.

Sandalwood paste can be applied directly on pimples and left on. Rose water can be added to sandalwood paste and applied on skin rashes. It is good for oily skin too. Add five drops of sandalwood essential oil to 50 ml olive oil, to make a fragrant, antiseptic body massage oil.

Add 2 to 3 drops sandalwood essential oil to 50 ml rose water and use as a skin toner.

Watch out
It’s important to apply and remove the eye make-up the right way
Ashima Sehajpal

Beauty experts might criticise the heavy make up look for they can cause reaction but a study by French scientists suggest otherwise. As per their study published in the journal, Analytical Chemistry, “The make-up that contains lead salts produce nitric oxide. It in turn helps better the immune system that guards the eyes against any infection causing bacteria.

” In general, another noteworthy point made by any beauty expert is that 40 per cent of the total make-up is done on eyes, which are the most sensitive area on the face. So, what make-up suits the eyes best, light or heavily layered? Says Richa Aggarwal, beauty specialist, Cleopatra, “More than the layering of eye shadows, what is important is a right base for eye make-up. Products in inferior quality can be taken a risk with if the base used doesn’t allow the pigments of the eye shadows to penetrate the skin.”

Eye shadows, foundation, shimmer and base should be used considering the skin type and the season. Adds Richa, “On oily skin, water proof base should be used. Also, it depends on the season. In summers, it’s recommended that creamy and oily bases should be avoided.” She suggests the use of Barrier Repair, a beauty product before applying cosmetics.

Before applying any cosmetic on the skin around eyes and eye lids, it should be first tested on the wrist to avoid any reaction. As Dr. SPS Grewal, city based eye specialist puts in, “Testing of any allergic reaction before applying it to the eyes will reduce the chances of harm to the eyes. But in case of any reaction, medical help should be sought at the earliest.” Removing make up in the minimum possible time is another risk free option. Taking off make up from eyes is as important as its application. Suggests Ishani Nanayakkara, beauty expert, Oleega, “Eye make-up removers are the best option to remove make up. They are alcohol free, are rich in olive oil that nourishes and repairs the skin post eye make up.” A few recommended brands are Mac, Elizabeth Allen and Lan’come. Specialists also discourage removal of make-up by scrubbing, “It can further damage the skin as the cosmetic can be absorbed by the skin. Even water or cleansers can’t completely take off the make-up and residue on the eye lids can cause a reaction.” As for the study by the French researchers, the experts in the city feel that no amount of make-up can protect eyes from infection, only good care can.

BODY wise
Be positive

Healthy weight loss should be a gradual and steady process. We simply cannot create a lean and toned body within weeks. If you want a healthy life and want to maintain a healthy weight, you need to be willing to change the way you live. It doesn’t mean changing everything overnight, but simply being open to new ways of doing things. You need to create a healthy lifestyle that’s right for you and to look for balanced, realistic, and enjoyable ways to fit healthy changes into your life. Making small changes, such as being aware of your portion sizes, eating more fruits and vegetables, and adding a few more steps to your daily routine can all add up to significant improvements in your health.

Below are some tips to help change lifestyle in a more positive way:

Change your thinking

Instead of focusing on weight loss programs, which are rarely successful over the long term, change your focus to improving your health. Focus on other health aspects you can improve, such as raising your fitness level and reducing your blood pressure, your blood sugar if you have diabetes, and your cholesterol and triglyceride levels. Eating a healthy diet and becoming active are the two major ways to improve your health.

Set goals you can reach

Set goals that focus on small, cumulative changes in your activities and diet that will lead to long-term health changes. Your goals should be specific, within your reach, and flexible enough to break once in a while. A goal to simply work out more and eat better is too general. Instead, make a plan to be active 4 to 5 times a week. For example, start with a goal to walk for 15 minutes three times a week, and then slowly increase it to 20 minutes 4 times a week. This provides clear direction on what you want to achieve.

Add to your diet

Try adding something to your diet instead of taking something away. Add foods that you think you need more of, like fruits and vegetables. Taking things out of your diet (for example, foods that are high in fat or sugar) may leave you feeling deprived, which may make it more difficult for you to make a change.

Keep it healthy

Stick to many of your own food preferences but substitute them for the lower fat varieties. This will make it easier for you to follow and stick with, in the long term. For example, make a kathi roll at home using wheat roti rather than maida or if you’re eating out, order a vegetarian pizza with half of the regular amount of cheese and have a salad.

Let go of the counting game

Don’t get hooked on trying to achieve the perfect nutrient ratio, as long as there is enough activity and less energy intake the weight should come down no matter how many carbs/protein are consumed. Also don’t let counting calories take over your life, it can just be a rough guide so that you generally take in less calories until reaching your goal.

Be physically active

Make daily activity a part of your routine. But first you need to identify with what keeps you from being active or exercising and try and find a solution for that. If you are always caught up with children at home, try and seek support from your in-laws or your spouse

Love yourself

Use measures other than weight to track your progress in reaching your health goals. Don’t try to achieve an unrealistic body size. A big part of making a successful lifestyle change is putting your weight in meaningful perspective.

On a roller coaster
Anuja Jaiswal

Welcome to the flip side of new-age living, When you have less time and more work, feel constantly pushed and monitored and hardly relax. Your emotions play truant and the result is mood swings, a bug that’s biting everyone, from children and youth to executives and homemakers. Ignore it and you risk becoming a victim to serious mental ailments like the bipolar disorder, warn psychiatrists.

Mood swings have, at its root, a play of different emotions, which are essential for living. Human living is all about bonding. For example, in a sad situation, people express sympathy or empathy, eliciting a bond. However, mood swings happen when a person expresses irrational, inexplicable, inappropriate or exaggerated emotions. For example, in a perfectly chilled out setting, when a person alternates between euphoria, irritability, sadness, hostility and despair without any apparent reason, it’s because of a mood swing.

Says Dr BS Chawan, head of psychiatry department of Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32, “Anger and/or frustration can trigger a mood swing.” He has several patients enrolling for anger management sessions. Ironically, this pursuit for happiness often involves facing up to more instances of mood swings. “The changing lifestyle responsible for the problem that cuts across age and gender,” says Dr Chawan.

Explaining the concept, he says that when the basic necessities of life are not fulfilled like eating healthy and regularly, sleeping well, laughing often - our mind plays its own cards.

Today, an infant has to grow faster and smarter, because he or she lives in a nuclear family, with usually both parents working, and at times, separated. Even an adult has to deal with the pressure of clashing ambitions at work and egos at home. “There is enough scientific evidence to suggest that people who have never married and who are divorced are more prone to mood disorders. Certain medicines or treatments for hormonal, thyroid, high blood pressure problems or cancer may also place a person in the risk category,” observes Doctor.

He identifies four factors that explain why you may get mood swings but your best friend doesn’t. These factors include the self, situation, personality and past. People who are excessively emotional or indulge in self-pity belong to the risk group. The self deals with one’s perceived notion at any given point. How a person behaves at a particular point reflects his/her vulnerability and speaks volumes for his/her EQ.

The situation could be any event, happy or sad, and the person’s response towards it. The past could again be a memory that often prompts a person to swim in a labyrinth of emotions. Never mind if the memory is happy or sad, dwelling too much on it stretches your emotions. The solution, say mental health experts, lies in understanding and accepting your emotions.

If you’re hypersensitive, take the advice from a family member, friend, peer or senior. Otherwise, simply introspect on the possible trigger for your mood swing. Be objective. One way to do this is to reconstruct certain events in your mind chronologically. Once you understand and appreciate your emotional interface, you can then play with your moods rather than the other way around.

Detox diary
Karan Arora

“Come, let’s have a beer!!” Alcohol, cigarettes and all the other toxic temptations are also a part. And when you are a party animal, chances are that you live, eat and drink merry to these temptations.

And this doesn’t stop at alcohol, cigarettes and drugs. In fact, the list also includes caffeine in form of coffee, carbon dioxide in soft drinks and more.

Diseases are increasing all over the world and the reasons are linked to the toxic things we end up with. We are continuously put on a self-destructing diet and lifestyle, with the mention stuff.

Dr. Devender Jain, a consultant dietician from Sector 21 says, “Excess of toxic stuff like alcohol, cigarettes, caffeine makes people ill. Most face problems like sweating, nervousness, fatigue, blood pressure, shivering etc. One should resort to detoxification should at least two months in a year to recover the system.”

Detoxification is the process of clearing toxins from the body and clearing excess of congestion. It is done by removing the toxins by cleansing of the bowels (part below the stomach). Detoxification involves dietary changes, which reduces intake of toxins and improves health. Toxicity in our body causes nutritional deficiencies that create biochemical imbalances, which in turn result in anti-social behavior. These toxic materials not only create imbalances but also result in various diseases.

Some of the common signs of illness due heavy intake of alcohol or other stuff are fatigue, indigestion, cough, muscle pain and poor sleep. So if you are pondering upon the reasons that are affecting your career, then this might be one of them. To avoid such hindrances, one must take a break once in a while or go on detoxification.

Dr Madhu Sharma, dietician, PGI says,“Liver and kidneys are the main metabolising organs of body and they are most effected by toxic stuff, which results in bad health.”

Says Dr. BN Behra, dietician, PGI says, “Soft drinks are less effective if taken with balanced diet. All the toxic foods contains only calories, no protein and minerals at all. Calories lost by half an hour walk are regained with one bottle of cold drink.”
