Centre working to reduce health risk in coal mines, says Union Minister
Mussoorie, June 14 He also said state-of-the-art gas masks had also been purchased to avoid any untoward incident resulting in decrease of mining accidents in the coalfields. The coal mines were burning in Jharkhand, Bihar and West Bengal since the past 30 years and the government had allocated more than Rs 10,000 crore for the treatment of such mines and stop the burning which was leading to immense loss of revenue in the country, said the minister. He added that an adequate compensation was being paid to the injured mine workers and deceased’s kin in such accidents. Speaking on Anderson and the Bhopal gas victims issue, Jaiswal said it had been blown out of proportion by the BJP. He raised the question as to why the BJP while in the NDA government had not -acted to extradite Anderson. He said it was just a political gimmick and the Law Minister in the UPA had already said all efforts would be made to bring Anderson back to India. He also said some Congress leaders were raising the issue due to their personal interest and nothing more than that. He added that the law would take its course. Jaiswal further said it was an unfortunate decision and the state and the Centre both should work leaving aside the politics towards providing relief to Bhopal
victims. |

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day
Mussoorie, June 14 The senior citizens carrying placards appealed to tourists to respect elders in their family and show them love and affection, thus removing their isolation. Later, talks were held at the Nagar Palika premises in which chief guest Speaker, Vidhan Sabha, Harbans Kapoor was felicitated with a shawl and a flower pot by members of the Senior Citizens Forum, Mussoorie. A study report on elders abuse prepared by HelpAge India was also released on the occasion. Palika President OP Uniyal announced to give Palika land for a senior citizens recreation club in the town. Mussoorie MLA Jot Singh Gunsola also promised to assist financially for the club. Kapoor said by merely making laws one could not improve the condition of elders, and effort at the level of the society was needed. He said the main problems faced by the elderly in the present age was isolation and neglect. Society should not ape western materialistic culture blindly and act in accordance with our traditional culture where elders had an important place in the family,
he added. Kapoor also said government departments should be sensitive towards senior citizens and assist them on priority basis. Showing concern over the neglect shown by children towards their elders, he said “the greatest virtue in
this world was serving the elders”. Deputy Director Dr Aapga Singh from HelpAge India said there was a need for all aspects of care for older persons, namely social, economic, health and shelter. The study report conducted by HelpAge India and Sigma revealed that feeling of being neglected stemmed from family related factors, such as family members not spending time nor interacting with them. Fortysix per cent elderly believed that family members were too busy with their own work. The most common form of abuse was verbal abuse, neglect, economic abuse and emotional abuse. Chennai led in cases of disrespect and Mumbai in cases of verbal abuse towards elders. Emotional abuse was reported more in Delhi (62 pc) while Bhopal (70 pc) led in abuse by sons,
followed by Kolkota. Nearly one-third population believed that elderly faced abuse due to
property issues. Dr Aapga Singh said more than 92 pc did not register any complaint against the abuser. Awareness about the laws, policies and programmes was low among the elderly. Coordinator of the forum RS Mishra thanked HelpAge India for their support and said another such centre would be established at Radha Krishan Temple at Kulri in near future. He also thanked convener SP Kochar for his support. Kochar said imbibing the Indian culture instead of western one was key to reduce elder abuse. Elder Abuse Awareness Day was started in 2006. In its initial year, several 100 organisations and government entities participated in activities intended to help promote a better understanding of the issues surrounding elderly abuse. |

Forum head Mishra talks about plight of elders
Mussoorie, June 14 “Back then the culture of throwing garbage on roads was not prevalent and people had a sense of responsibility, but now the situation is completely the opposite”. He added that then elders were respected, but now the youth pass by blowing pressure horns and in high speed risking their as well as elders’ lives. He said this all had arisen due to cut-throat competition among the youth and mad rush for money and they had forgotten elders in the process. Shanta Bai of Dehradun said with tears in her eyes that her children had forgotten her completely and she was now dependent on others for clothes and medicines. Still she did not say any adverse words against her children. “Can’t help it. I am a mother,” added Shanta. Press Club of Mussoorie president Bijendar Panwar said the condition of elders in the Himalayan state was of serious concern as due to migration of youth for employment, the elderly were left behind to fend for themselves under tiring circumstances. There had been many instances where the elders had been attacked by leopards due to the solitary life they led, added Panwar. Coordinator of Senior Citizen Confederation of Uttarakhand Yogendar Kohli said senior citizens should also learn to become self-dependent and fight for their own cause. The main concern of the elders was loneliness, security and economic negligence. |
