Workout in style
Exercising in the gym isn’t the only thing; one needs to do it in chic clothes and accessories
Ashima Sehajpal

We know you know it all, but lets revise the 'history'. Working out in the gym is about losing weight. It's about staying fit. It's about toning up muscles…building abs, cardio, weight training, pilates and many more such clichés. And just when we thought there was nothing more interesting in there, a fact flowed in. Manish Arora, ace designer, is all set to launch a gym line under the designer label Fish Fry. That brings in some spice!
Rayshita Sachdeva
Rayshita Sachdeva

He justifies the addition of gym range to the existing collection with the obvious fact, "It's usually youngsters who visit gyms and their intention is not only working out. They also go there to be seen and admired, which of course is not possible without stylish clothes and accessories like shoes, bags, bands and bandanas."

Till Manish is out with his line of gym wear, youngsters are supporting nothing less stylish. Who wears 'just any' pyjama or to make it sound a tad better 'lower', a silly tee or shoes? 'Just any' won't do. Priyanka Bajaj, a young entrepreneur, makes an effort to wear brands that fellow gym-goers don't. Her favourites are tees from the house of American Eagle, Aero Tostale and Amber Crombi. "A huge gym wardrobe motivates me to be regular. It's important to feel comfortable and confident while working out on different machines, and one can't feel the same in clothes that are inappropriate," says Priyanka. And she feels almost everyone in the gym has the same approach. "You can't wear a worn out set of clothes to the gym. Looking good is very important, the reason all gym-goers wear the best of clothes and even accessories." For girls, available in the market are hairbands and caps while for boys it is wristbands and bandanas.

As Vikram Kapoor, General Manager, Ozone, says, "The ultimate aim of joining a gym is to improve the way you look. Wearing right clothes is the beginning if it all. Also looking stylish is a good way to grab attention." To have a better style quotient than fellow gym members, it is vital to understand certain basics. "Practicality and durability of what you wear in the gym are important. Like a pair of jeans or ethnic wear is not good for doing cardio exercises and this shouldn't be compromised in the name of style," suggests Manish.

Several sports brands like Adidas, Reebok, Nike and Puma enjoy a huge clientele of fitness freaks. "Staying fit is extremely important for youngsters these days for which they join a gym. And a chic wardrobe is indispensable," says Nikhil Jain, Adidas store-17.

But for Rayshita Sachdeva, a student, simplicity holds the key. "One doesn't need a huge gym wardrobe, lowers in basic colours and tees are enough." She uses hairbands matching the colour of the tees and shoes every now and then.

So, what's your style quotient for the gym?

Poster boy
Neha Walia

Now, here's something different, literally. You are one of the most happening poster boys of the fashion circuit (counted among the top five supermodels in the country), have been on the cover of GQ, walked the international ramp and recently represented the country at the Mr World competition held in South Korea last month. And the 'being different' part of it is yet to come!
Inder Bajwa
Inder Bajwa. photo: Vinay Malik

It is but natural that with a profile like this, Milan, Paris, London fashion weeks are just another addition. But, "I don't aspire for international success, I love being in India and working here. I am not the outsourcing type." That's Inder Bajwa for those who are not familiar with him yet.

Inder walked the ramp for Jack and Jones in the city and fell in love with it once again. "I love Chandigarh and it has always been my favourite city." Keeping his roots in Bajwa Kalan intact while he transformed himself into a ramp scorcher in Mumbai, Inder sees it as no surprise. "I never believed that I would not become something that I am today. When I first started off, I was clueless about where to begin. Sans any godfather, my only best friend was the optimist in me. I was always a stubborn child, and this stubbornness turned into a positive."

Well, for someone who just returned from the Mr World contest after competing with 75 good looking men, ending up among the top 15 was an achievement. "After the Mr World contest, I think I know the world. Now, the world knows me as Mr India, isn't that an achievement?" Guess we have answered the question already!

Apart from his chiselled face, toned torso and killer looks, Inder made the world learn bhangra. "I performed on the song main nikala gaddi leke from Gadar and everybody thereafter was doing the same step." What else do you expect from a hardcore Punjabi munda, huh? Four years into modelling, Inder feels it's time to move on. "I am currently working on my diction and grooming my acting skills." We got the idea, but isn't it obvious? "Not really. I don't want to work in one or two movies and then fade away. I want to do quality work. Offers have been pouring in but I don't want to say yes until it's worth the effort."

Inder is interested more in being a bad guy on screen, though his looks are meant for the opposite. "Negative roles are more challenging and give you more room for experimentation," says Inder. And his take on the fashion industry? "Being a male model is not easy. Fashion is a women-centric industry. But it's a fair deal as you are spared the gruelling make-up sessions."

Back to business, Inder is currently busy doing theatre workshops with Nadira Babbar and sorting out his options. "I have just come back from a holiday, back home in Bajwa Kalan. It's the best place to be when I need a break." And up next? Bollywood, Punjabi cinema or Tollywood? "I want to complete my homework first and then begin towards my next goal."

Good luck…is all we can wish to this good-looking dude!

Perfect scoop
Jasmine Singh

‘Forget love - I'd rather fall in chocolate," quoted Sandra J. Dykes. And we nod in approval, whole-heartedly, without an iota of doubt!

If a small, bright, curve on a face lights up a million hearts, a scoop of rich, chocolatey, ice-cream or a creamy vanilla gelato is a perfect stress buster, a good damage control exercise (in situations when you have emptied your husbands debit card, you can make up with some yup flavoured scoop), and the best all around dessert (eating ice cream in winters is the idea of romance of many couples).

On World Ice-Cream Day on Tuesday, we scoop in tantalising, gooey and yummy world of ice-creams, looking at their expansion from a matkey ki kulfi to exotic flavours to the rich gelatos, not to forget the growing fan following!

Amul ice-cream parlour, Sector-44 and 19, has started a cool initiative by organising a month-long celebration. The festival brings an array of ice-cream flavours, perfect combinations of sundaes, shakes, sodas and scoops. You can choose from the ever-popular Vanilla scoop or indulge in your favorite Sundae, made exactly the way you like it. Scoops of ice-cream layered with fudge and topped with cookie and whipped cream! Or quench your thirst with the mango and other varieties of ice-cream shakes and sodas.

And the diabetics or health conscious need not worry; sugar-free ice-creams are also available. Says Surinder Sharma, regional ice-cream head, Amul, "The world of ice-creams is growing. It goes without saying that it is an all-season dessert. Fifteen out of 10 people like ice-creams," he laughs. "The world of amazing flavours has grown as well. Earlier, it was either 'khoya ki kulfi', simple choco bar, mango or orange flavour, but now one can pick from umpteen flavours."

Amul ice-cream parlor has come up with very affordable range of scoops. "Apart from the usual Vanilla and Strawberry flavours, ice-cream lovers would be treated to Shahi Anjir, Raj Bhog, Black Currant et all. In Amul special section there would be cassata sundae, Hum Tum (any two flavors), Double Swirl, Magic Swirl, Fruit Cream, Fresh Fruit with ice-cream et all."

In addition, a variety of sundaes including mouth-watering banana split, brownie sundae, chocolate hot fudge, fruit and nut sundae, hot fudge, kesar pista sundae, oreo cookies sundae, tutty fruity sundae, triple scoop sundae and make your sundae are also available.

Then come the gelatos and their growing market. Nik owner Nik Bakers will be starting Gelato cakes pretty soon. "The thing with ice-cream is that every scoop is an experience, which is why people are gung-ho about it. Also, there are so many flavours that one wants to dig into each one." Although Nik still feels, "That there is need to upgrade the ice-cream market by looking at the transportation and storage facilities."

Mother Dairy too redefines and expands its ice-cream portfolio this summer to delight the 'health conscious' and the 'indulgent pleasure seekers'. Go on a guilt-free trip with the all-new Mother Dairy Dietz 'Sugar Free'- a hard to refuse option that is low on fat and high on fibre.

For the indulgent pleasure seekers, Mother Dairy offers delectable flavours with the latest innovation - Western Range. Now, it's time to dig into some of those scoops!

Over to Bollywood

Popular TV actor Hussain Kuwajerwala, who will soon be seen in the first-ever Bollywood musical, feels the task is quite challenging as he is required to sing, dance, fight, do acrobatics -- all in just two hours without any re-take.

"This musical involves a lot of hard work and there is no scope for mistake," Hussain said in an interview. "You can say that it is India's answer to the Opera and Moulin Rouge. It is the first of its kind where you will have a small Bollywood musical in which everyone will give live performance," he said.

The musical Zangoora will also have actors like Isha Sharvani and Gauhar Khan at the Kingdom of Dreams - India's first entertainment and leisure destination at Gurgaon which will be launched in the end of July.

The Kingdom of Dreams is owned by the Great Indian Nautanki Company, a joint venture between Wizcraft International Entertainment and Apra Group of Companies. The official announcement about Zangoora was made in Colombo on the last day of the ongoing International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) awards.

Talking about his role in the musical, Hussain says that it is a very demanding job and all actors who are part of this musical are working on improving their stamina. Before Hussain, actor Vivek Oberoi was signed as the lead actor for the musical extravaganza. Vivek opted out of the project and Hussain stepped into his shoes. "Well, when I got a call from the organisers, I didn't know about the project, nor did I know about Vivek. So, I don't know why they signed me for the role, but all I can assure you that it is one of a lifetime opportunity," said Hussain. The actor said that it would be a cliché if he said he is not aiming for the tinsel town.

"Every actor wants to be in Bollywood and like all of them, it is my dream to be a part of Bollywood. But it would be a cliche to say that I want to do something different and am waiting for that dream role," Hussain said. "I feel what is important is to be consistent with your work and you will definitely be noticed," he added.

The actor's popularity soared at an all-time high when he won the second season of the dance reality show Nach Baliye with his wife Tina. Ever since that, he has hosted reality shows like Kisme Kitna Hai Dum, Khullja Sim Sim 2, and is now hosting the third seasons of Indian Idol as well. — IANS

QUICK shopper

Hollywood actress Mischa Barton has admitted that she is a very impatient shopper and hates trying out things while shopping for clothes.

The OC star, who loves picking out clothes from the street, calls herself lucky as without even a trial she is normally right with her choices, reported a fashion magazine. "I like to shop in Brooklyn, New York, where there are a lot of people selling their things on the street. I love to pick out weird stuff like that. I'm not very patient when I shop. I don't try things on - if they don't work out, I take them back, but usually I have a pretty good eye," said Mischa. The 24-year-old actor, who has her own line of handbags, said that pockets are the most important for her while shopping for one.

"On bags, I always look for pockets that are actually functional - that's the most important thing. I tend to have quite big bags, but I do like little purses - just for the things I need, like a credit card and Chap Stick. Other days, I like to be able to throw everything in there!" said Barton. — PTI

Sweet tweet

Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan has wished superstar Shah Rukh Khan a speedy recovery from his aggravated back problem. "Speedy recovery for your back Shah Rukh! It is such a bother really. I take resort through medication, but massage is better," Bachchan wrote on microblogging site Twitter.

Shah Rukh's back pain has aggravated following the hectic shooting schedule for his film Ra.One. He is finding it tough to get into the superhero avatar for the film and perform dangerous stunts due to the problem. He tweeted: "Huge blue screen... 100 cars... cranes wires... gawd i am making a film beyond my means. Now working with my doctor on my back. Time to scream out ouch... ooh... aah." — IANS

Rescue ranger

Popstar Christina Aguilera came to the rescue of Twilight heartthrob Robert Pattinson when the actor was being mobbed by paparazzi. The Genie In A Bottle hit-maker was in the driveway of her Beverly Hills home when Pattinson showed up on her gate asking for a refugee from the hounding paparazzi, a website reported.

Aguilera who is a huge fan of the British actor, was surprised when she heard someone at her security gate and went to see who was there.

Outside, a desperate Pattinson was trying to get help to escape the paparazzi and asked Aguilera to let him in. She did and then let him hide out for a few hours. When it was time to leave, the pop star allegedly went out first and drew the paparazzi away, so her guest could slip out unnoticed. —PTI

Break up party!

British pop star Cheryl Cole is reportedly all set to throw a big bash after divorcing from British soccer player Ashley Cole. The Fight For this Love hit-maker is organising a lavish party with her close female friends to celebrate the end of her marriage to Cole, who allegedly cheated on her with numerous women, a publication reported online.

"Cheryl is very keen to have the divorce settled so she can get on with her life. She wants to let her hair down and forget about Ashley. There will be a strict no televisions policy so Cheryl and her pals do not see the 29-year-old love-rat in the game," a source said.

The 26-year-old beauty is planning the get-together to coincide with the England's soccer match against the US during the FIFA World Cup this month. "She has no interest in watching England's World Cup matches because of Ashley's involvement so she thought the perfect time for a mini-celebration would be during the USA game," the source added. Cheryl filed for divorce last month, and has been spotted since then with her backing dancer Derek Hough while Ashley has been linked to a 23-year-old lap dancer Sarah Purnell. — PTI

Birthday bumps

Bollywood actor Shilpa Shetty's husband Raj Kundra has planned a surprise trip for his wife's birthday on June 8.

An ecstatic Shilpa wrote on her blog: "Glad Raj is back to celebrate my 1st birthday after marriage on the 8th of June. He has instructed my manager to keep 7th, 8th, 9th free to surprise me with a break (Yes, he's full of surprises! He's made arrangements for a trip but I have no idea where to... too sweet, all very exciting)."

Meanwhile, the actor re-lived her good old filmi days during the shooting of dance reality show Zara Nach Ke Dikha when the female participants paid tribute to her by performing on her songs.

"The girls performed on a medley of my songs for an act and in similar costumes that I wore in my songs... made me very nostalgic and brought back some beautiful memories that made me a tad bit emotional (don't know why) in a good way," she added. — IANS

In limelight again

American actress Sandra Bullock made her first public appearance since she split from husband Jesse at the Guys Choice Awards in Los Angeles, where she grabbed a movie award.

The 45-year-old star won the Troops Choice award for Entertainer of the Year, from presenter Robert Downey Jr and the honour was bestowed by members of the military and received a standing ovation from the audience inside the Sony Pictures Studios on Saturday, a magazine reported.

"Let's be honest here, just for a moment. We're all going to be honest, right? Did I win this for being entertainer of the year, or did I win this because of the spectacular I.E.D. [improvised explosive device] explosion that became my personal life!" Bullock said to the audience.

"No, it's okay. Because I would do it over again if it was to entertain our troops, and our extraordinary troops deserve something much more than some actress in a tight dress talking herself," she added.

The Oscar-award-winning actor also thanked the troops for their sacrifices towards the country. "Having a dad that's a veteran, I see the sacrifices you made for this country. I'm so lucky everyday to wake up having what I have and I thank you guys for that. I would sing, but you've seen enough pain in your lifetime. I would dance - I'm a pretty good dancer, but as I mentioned, the dress is pretty tight," Bullock said. — PTI

What’s clicking?
With just about everyone possessing a high-resolution camera phone these days, has the use of other cameras taken
a backseat?
Jasmine Singh

Sweltering sun, humid weather or torrid rains… there is no way you wouldn’t want to step out from the monotony of your schedule and neighbourhood. Even if you wish to spend a weekend in the cosy comfort of your home, the little ones would ensure they drag you to a nearest hill station or take them to their grandparents place!

No matter what the situation, you definitely wouldn’t want to move without one thing in tow - a camera to get cartloads of memories, both good and bad. With just about every member of the family walking with a high resolution camera phone, which by the way is loaded with music, videos and is connected on Internet 24X7, has the usage of cameras in capturing moments taken a backseat? Often now, mummy doesn’t break all hell loose if daddy forgets the ‘England wali aunty’s’ gifted cameras in the closest.

All the same, we ask people to take their pick- a camera or a camera phone. This is what they say.

“Camera phones are getting better with each passing month. Mobile companies understand that people use them not just to make and receive calls, but as a gadget that is a one-stop answer,” feels Sahil Jain, owner of chain of Exotic Flowers in Chandigarh. “A mobile is used as an Ipod as well as a camera. Personally, I have forgotten the last time when I carried a camera to click pictures. Mobile phones like Sony Ericsson or Nokia offer higher megapixels and have a good storage capacity as well.”

Nokia N 91, E73, N86, Samsung G600 etc are some of the handsets that come with a good camera, which promise good quality images. Shares Tarangpreet Sandhu, a blogger and a freelance copy editor, “It would be an exaggeration to say that mobile phones have sabotaged the market for cameras. There is definitely no replacement for a high resolution or a 24-megapixel camera. However, people prefer to click pictures from their mobiles, one because they carry it all the time and second, they can immediately share pictures without much effort.” For Tarangpreet, “Mobile phones are a good substitute for a camera.”

All fair and square, but what about the quality of the image? Mobile sets like Blackberry do offer good quality pictures, but can the neatness be as good as the digi-cameras that we have these days? “Have you ever seen the prints taken from a mobile camera?” questions Jagdish Ahuja, a freelance photographer. He adds, “The picture quality is bad. The mobile market is flooded with phones offering 3-4 and even more megapixel cameras, but they certainly are of no use when it comes to enlarging the pictures.”

Ahuja opines that mobile phones are handy for taking pictures and sending them across to friends or posting them on the blog. “But when it comes to taking prints or images for professional purposes, there is no alternative to SLRs or digi-cameras of high resolution,” he says.

Window dressing

Who’s in control of your Windows 7 desktop - you or the operating system? With applications and icons scattered all over the place, constant pop-up notifications, and programmes hidden deep within the Start menu, you might feel like Microsoft has done its best to hinder your productivity rather than enhance it. But with a little know-how and a few free tools, you can take charge of your desktop like never before.

Use your Windows computer long enough, and sometime during the day you’ll find you have a plethora of open applications. Getting back to a clean desktop within nothing running can involve dozens of clicks - and lots of wasted time. There has to be a better way, right? There is, but Microsoft didn’t provide it. Ntwind Software’s free tool CloseAll does pretty much what its name implies: with one click, it closes every application running on your desktop. The tool requires no installation.

Just download it, unzip it in a folder of your choice, and then create a shortcut to the exe file on your desktop. You can also pin it to your taskbar for even easier access. Its icon - a big red X - makes its intent obvious. It’s one of those little tools that you’ll wonder how Microsoft forgot.

When you’re trying to concentrate on an urgent report or presentation, the last thing you need from your Windows desktop is a distracting pop-up from the system tray, telling you of some software update that can certainly wait. You can get rid of those pop-ups for good in Windows 7, or you can customise the desktop to show only those pop-ups that you deem worthy.

First, visit the Action Centre by opening the Start menu and typing “Action”. Click the first entry that appears, which should be Action Centre. From the left-hand panel of the Action Centre, click “Change Action Centre settings”, and you’ll be taken to a dialog box in which you can deselect a number of types of system messages, including Windows Update notices, backup reminders, or internet security settings.

Turn them all off if you want to be left in peace. Click OK to make your selections stick. That will take care of notifications from Windows, but to control notifications from installed applications, you’ll need to open the Start menu and type “Notifications”. Click the resulting Notification Area Icons entry, which will open a dialog box of the same name.

Window 7 comes with dozens of keyboard shortcuts that let you take control of your desktop quickly. Many of these keyboard shortcuts use the Windows key - which has a Windows logo on it along with the word Start on some keyboards. We’ll abbreviate that key simply with the designation “Win”.

Home front
Far from the maddening crowd
Eco-friendly, low budget, architect Ajai Johl’s Foliage Farm is an ideal retreat from the hustle and bustle of city life
Mona

Earthy and cool are the words that best describe Ajai Johl's 'Foliage Farm' nestled among the bougainvillea shrubs and tall bamboos in Kishangarh.

Inspired by the piece of land amidst mango groves, this single storey mud house was an overnight vision of this gifted architect. "I moved in after just 11 weeks of conceptualising this house," shares Johl while sitting in his work studio. Grapevines cover this studio's entrance. Johl points out, "The benefit of grapevines is that they are bare in winters letting the sun in, while they provide shade in the summers."

Long terracotta chimes serve as the doorbell. Eco-friendly and easy on pocket, this two bedroom house has used natural materials wherever possible. The formal living area is simple and elegant. Red bricks have been used for the flooring as well as the ceiling. "Not only is this house eco-friendly, its low cost as well," says Johl.

"I have used burnt bricks that are available for a third of the price of the regular bricks," he adds. Red bricks lend warmth to the interiors. The walls are done in pilli mitti (raw sienna). "It takes me less than Rs 500 to paint the entire house," he says.

Another room has antique furniture in a mix of wood and iron. "This is my favourite area of the house," says Johl, sitting on the couch, "For it gives best visual feeling of the whole place." A side table displays Johl's golf and architectural trophies. An old gramophone and earthen lamps sit pretty on other tables. A reversible antique bench is part of the formal area of lobby that extends up to the open kitchen, while a round centre table in wood and wrought iron makes for the eating area, as does a yellow stone slab with wooden chairs.

A small lobby houses beautiful black frames that hold black and white pictures of Johl with his parents and two daughters. The master bedroom has an antique wooden bed, a bookshelf and a small workstation. It opens into the green lawns.

This place only has floor or ceiling lights. Lamps in bright colours adorn different corners of the house. Brij's abstract paintings in bright colours decorate the walls.

A Buddha in wrought iron, a wooden Ganesha, earthy flowerpots complement the traditional look of the house. Plain, horizontal grills not only look stylish but also give unobstructed view of the greenery around. Whether it is because of the cooling effect of mud walls or plants outside, a ceiling fan in hot, sultry June afternoon is good enough!

Even the pets — Gabru and Chora (an Alsatian and a Labrador) — have a mud kennel to themselves. Away from the hustle bustle of city life Johl has created a comfort zone that offers him both solace and inspiration.

Palate pleasure
Jasmine Singh

Rustic flavours of crushed garlic and fresh green chillies in tender morsels of boneless chicken tikkas; tangy potato cubes tempered with curry leaves and tossed in crushed peanuts or mushrooms and green peas served on puffed bread, Kaanji Wada… wondering what permutations and combinations are we talking about?

If not the names, the ingredients definitely sound familiar. Ought to be, because they are very Indian, often used at our homes, hotels and restaurants. So, what's new? Well, take it from Ramanpreet, executive chef with the The Lobby, a soon-to-be opened for public lounge in sector-26.

"It is called modern Indian cuisines and this should not be confused with fusion cuisines," explains Raman, elaborating with examples. "A chicken curry flavoured with rosemary is a fusion dish. But something like a Lahsuni Palak Ka Pulao, Paan Wali Rasmalai is a modern Indian cuisine."

A food connoisseur can see the clear demarcation, but for layman more explanation is required. "We do not use any foreign element in modern Indian dishes. These dishes are very Indian, save for the fact that we use new techniques and flavours, which are again part of our culture. Also, these are simple dishes that have been never tried before," adds Raman, who will also whip the menu with Modern Oriental cuisines.

A relatively new concept and sounds sumptuous too. Nods Raman, "This concept is picking up in the city although it is very new. This would be exclusive to The Lobby. The good part about modern Indian dishes is that people wouldn't necessarily want the chef to explain what is on the palate, they are simple, easy; just different."

Another new and different thing with the The Lobby is the bar menu that boasts of interesting combinations - Lily Martini, Smoke Melon Martini, Skinny Tinis (low calorie drink). Says Vijay Prakash, Bar Manager, "We will be using fresh flowers like Jasmine, Orchids, Lillies. Also, we will use fresh fruits for cocktails like Californian plums and red grapes to name a few." Delectable, what say? jasmine@tribunem,ail.com

Spade work
Space out
Satish Narula

Today I will deal with two things. One, the limited space for planting and the other, identification of plants, especially the Ashok species.

Limited space is more of a problem with residents whose houses are without a service lane and have a common boundary wall with that of the neighbours. The space is not good enough for planting big trees, but is apt for Polyalthea longifolia var pendula. The tree grows up straight and provides excellent screen cover. It is, however, advised that the tree be reduced to 10 feet height every year. Allowed to grow taller, it may branch and tilt, which becomes unwieldy. Even after pruning at the top, which should be done in December, it attains the same shape.

Now, the second issue is of identification of trees. There are four species that are called Ashok by the gardeners. In fact, there are three of them with similar leaves. These are Polyalthea longifolia, Polyalthea longifolia var pendula and Polyalthea longifolia var nana. The leaves of all these three species are absolutely similar in shape with the only exception being the nana leaves, which attain a miniature form. The tree also remains dwarf. The first two types are differentiated by the shape of the tree, which in case of Polyalthea longifolia is spreading type and in case of pendula like a pendulum. So when you go out to buy a tree that is to be planted in lesser space, insist on pendula type.

Another important specie, which is not related to these types but is called the Ashok, is the Sita Ashok (Saraca asoka). This, in fact, is the actual Ashok tree that also has religious significance. The tree has litchi-like, long, shining leaves and bears excellent bunch of orange-red blooms.

Myth of the week
Mind the mounds

With the monsoon approaching, strong winds are likely and one should make mounds around the trees to give them strength is a false notion. The lose mound around the plant not only conserves moisture, which causes rotting, but also becomes a breeding ground for insects. It hardly provides any support to the plant with heavy heads.
