About 200 illegal structures built in the vicinity of the Ambala Air Force Station are to be pulled down shortly.Deputy Commissioner Sameer Pal Srow said the departments concerned had been instructed to demolish the illegal structures. While some of the structures had already been demolished the remaining would be pulled down in the coming few days, he said.

Sources added that about 200 illegal buildings in two unapproved colonies -- Gandhi Nagar, a residential colony, and Shiv Transport Nagar, a commercial complex having a large number of transport offices and godowns -- had been identified as violators of norms.

The district administration, including an official of the district and town planning, Ambala, have already ordered demolition of these structures after getting survey reports from the DTP and officials of the municipal corporation.

Sources in the district administration said under the National Security Act, according to Sub Section 2 of the Work of Defence Act, 1903, no construction is allowed within 100 metre from the boundary wall of Air Force Station. But large number of illegal buildings had been constructed close to the boundary wall of Air Force Station without seeking any permission.

According to information, an Air Force officer had sent a copy to the state government regarding this matter. Following a complaint from the Air Force authority alleging a serious threat to the security of aerodrome, the Deputy Commissioner passed the orders to demolish all illegal structures.

Sometime back the police had arrested four unidentified persons on different occasions allegedly spying the aerodrome area. Air Force officers have strongly demanded to remove these illegal constructions causing threat to the airport.

75 pc exemption on toll to locals
Panel wants NHAI, GMR to be consistent
Our Correspondent

Dera Bassi, June 7
Members of the Dera Bassi Block Grievances Committee have raised the issue of Dappar Toll Plaza authorities charging full toll tax from local residents despite a notification of the National Highway Authority of India to provide 75 per cent exemption to the local people.

In the meeting presided over by SDM Puneet Goyal, the members of the committee pointed out that NHAI officials and GMR company were not giving the 75 per cent rebate to the locals.

The NHAI project director, Anil Dahiya, and representatives of GMR company reportedly expressed their helplessness in giving the rebate. The matter of the fact was that the NHAI and the GMR were not clear about the interpretation of the word ‘local’.

Members of grievances committee Raghbeer Juneja and Bhupinder Saini said there was a bias in the notifications given to toll plazas, as local people within the radius of 10 km around the toll plaza of Panipat were provided concession. They demanded the same notification for all toll plazas.

SDM Puneet Goyal said including above issues some other local problems raised by the committee members would also be resolved soon.

In-form Kahlon all set for Queen’s Cup
Donald Banerjee

Chandigarh, June 7
Harmeet Kahlon has done it again. Yes this 39-year-old city golfer has recorded yet another top 10 finish in the Professional Golf Tour of India to occupy the 11th slot in the Order of Merit after the Players’ Championship event at Aamby Valley.

Harmeet, who was the national amateur champion for nine years, is getting back into shape after a lean period in 2007 and 2008. He bounced back into the game last year and he has carried forward that shape into the 2010 season. This season, he has notched four top-10 slots in five outings, including two events in which he finished third (Panchkula) and fifth (Mumbai).

Armed with this show on the national circuit, Harmeet is all set for the Queen’s Cup Asian Tour event to be held at Koh Samui in Thailand from June 17 to 21, where he hopes to repeat if not improve upon his Thailand King’s Cup performance in December last when he finished fourth in that Asian Tour event.

Harmeet gives full credit to his mental trainer Pradeep Aggarwal and Florida-based British coach Jonathan Yarwood for his return to form.

“That stiffness in my stance has given way to a more relaxed approach to the game,” said Harmeet, who feels his new-found confidence gives him an advantage over the other players when playing on tough conditions. “Yes, I am now able to control my emotions on the greens,” he says, adding that golf is more of a mental game.

Harmeet, who represented the country in the Asian Games twice (1994 and 1998) with the team finishing fourth on both occasions, finds cricket captain Dhoni worth emulating. “Whenever something is not working he tries something new. That is his trump card. I have tried this approach and it has worked wonders for me,” said Harmeet who turns 40 on September 15, 2010.

Harmeet, who was awarded the Arjuna Award in 1997, soon after his victory in the Asia Pacific in Hong Kong, feels too much stress can spoil the game. Besides, one tends to bring home that stress and frustration. He claims to have overcome that stress and is all set to translate his form into good performances in the remaining tournaments.

He feels the turning point in his game after the two-year lean period came last year, when he clinched the fourth slot in the Thailand King’s Cup Asian Tour event. Since then Harmeet has not looked back.

His best round this year has been the five under 65 in the third round of the Aamby Valley Players Championship last month in which he finished with a six under 282 score to occupy the 10th slot in a field that included top professional golfers of the country, besides the top guns from Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

Harmeet, who is also the director of the Chandigarh Golf Club Academy, also takes tips from national grade A coach Jessie Grewal, who heads the National Golf Academy of India at the CGA Golf Range.
