Hair of 15 students cut for coming late
Srinagar, June 4 “We were stuck in a traffic jam and reached late. But when we told the school authorities the truth, they said it was an excuse and beat us up.Then, our hair were cut ,” alleged a student. The students alleged anyone who came late had to undergo similar punishment everyday. They protested against the school authorities, boycotted classes and lodged a complaint with the police today. “A case was registered against the school after a written complaint by the students at Ram Munsi Bagh police station. We have taken cognisance and further investigation is in progress. We spoke to the school Principal and he said the authorities had no animosity with the students who were mischief- makers,” SSP, Srinagar, Javid Reyaz told The Tribune.“ We have listened to both sides and will speak to the parents and ask them to do counselling with the students”,he added. The parents told The Tribune that they would make sure that those responsible were punished as the punishment meted to their children would have a psychological effect on them. “My child was so humiliated that he did not have dinner last night. He kept on crying. I will ensure action against the school administration,” said a parent. Meanwhile, Director, School Education, Kashmir, Shagufta Parveen said: “We are looking into the matter and will take action against the school, if the complaint is found to be true.” The school authorities refused to say anything in this regard. |
Brick kilns a cause for worry in Rajbagh
Rajbagh, June 4 Ironically, most of these kilns have been set up on a fertile land which has a good source of water from the nearby Ujh. Vast patches of barren land are witnessed everywhere in the township, as the top soil, full of humus, is being used for making bricks and not for agriculture purpose. Respiratory and skin aliments are common among villagers and hundreds of migrant labourers and their families, who work and live around these kilns. “Due to dust particles and pungent smell, I am facing acute respiratory problem for the last couple of years,” said Sham Lal, a victim of pollution. He added the matter had time and again been raised with the authorities concerned who seemed to be unmoved towards our plight. There is a general perception that there’s a strong nexus between officials of the Revenue Department and the Pollution Control Board (PCB). “Otherwise, how could one dare to operate brick kilns on an agriculture land and also use irrigation water for running such establishments,” alleged a local shopkeeper. Deputy Commissioner, Kathua, Sanjeev Verma admitted that the pollution level was crossing all limits in the town, with PCB officials taking no concrete steps to check it. Verma further said he had many a time raided and fined the violators and also informed PCB officials. “We, however, can not immediately shift these brick kilns, since they have been operating in the area during the past over a decade,” he added. Verma, however, clarified that no fresh permission was being granted to anyone for installing new brick kilns, although many had applied for the same. |
BJP wants provincial council for Jammu
Jammu, June 4 The BJP suggested adequate administrative and financial powers to the proposed provincial council would help remove discrimination against the Jammu region. “In the name of regions, Kashmir-centric parties like the NC and the PDP are hatching conspiracies to divide the Jammu region on regional lines and our proposal is aimed at frustrating such designs,” said Dr Nirmal Singh, who has prepared the document in favour of a provincial council. “Since the time of Maharaja Ghulab Singh, the Jammu region has a different identity so we have been demanding that this province should be given a separate council on the pattern of the LAHDC,” Singh argued. The BJP believes that successive state governments have meted out step motherly treatment in allotting developmental funds to the Jammu regions; thus, setting up of the provincial council is the only way to give just treatment to the region. Earlier, the BJP was demanding a regional council for Jammu but the party had changed the terminology from regional council to provincial council so as to protect the political identity of this region. The NC and the PDP have been supporting the demand of the hill development council for twin border districts of Poonch and Rajouri and the Chenab valley council for erstwhile Doda district. Some organisations of the Sangh Parivar have also supported this demand. After getting green signal from the high-command, the state unit would launch a mass movement in support of this demand. |
Omar optimistic about PM’s visit
Srinagar, June 4 Speaking at a felicitation function organised in his favour by the Civil Secretariat Employees Coordination Committee here today, he said confrontation had never helped settle the issues. “I have time and again maintained that the state government would actively facilitate the internal and external dialogue processes to help restore permanent peace and address political issues,” he asserted. The Chief Minister stressed the need to create a conducive atmosphere for a dialogue to seek solution to the issues and pave the way for a peaceful state. Referring to the employees’ demands, the Chief Minister assured that the government would fulfil all its commitments made to them. “ In fact, on the first day of opening of offices at Jammu after I assumed the Chief Minister’s office, I made it clear at a press conference that the government would implement recommendations of the Sixth Pay Commission. We have fulfilled the promise and are ready to gradually meet the other demands,” he said. He urged for cordial relations between employees and the government. Nazir Ahmad Mir,president of the Civil Secretariat Employees Coordination Committee, and other office-bearers lauded the Chief Minister’s efforts in helping resolve the issues. “We do not believe in confrontation, shutdowns and hartals. We always look for addressing issues through interaction,” the speakers assured Omar and said they would work wholeheartedly to implement the development policies of the
government. The employees union leaders also presented a memorandum of demands to the Chief Minister and expressed hope that these would be actively considered. |
Dejected kin of Zuhaib to go back to Srinagar
Jammu, June 4 “In 1984, the body of a youth who had drowned in the lake was found after 21 days and we were also hopeful that Zuhaib’s body could come up, if he had drowned. However, we have not been able to locate it after 21 days and have decided to leave the place”, said Showkat Khan, a maternal uncle of Zuhaib. He further said they had tried everything possible to locate the youth, but had failed. “Now, we have two options.Either the police will trace the body or God will help us”, added Showkat. He said they were thankful to the Army and the Samba police, who had made every effort to trace him. He further said he had talked to the principal of the college to get some clue about the sudden disappearance of Zuhaib. “The Principal has assured us that after the completion of exams, the students will be available to tell whatever they knew about Zuhaib”, said Showkat. Zuhaib has a younger sister and mother as his father died in a road mishap in 1999. The Samba police said it had not been able to trace him till now. |

Teams sent to rescue Gujjars lose contact due to snowfall
Jammu, June 4 The authorities could, however, establish the identity of two persons who died due to snow blizzards and rain in the higher reaches but the exact number of the livestock lost was yet to be ascertained. According to official sources, the rescue teams could not establish contact through satellite phones due to sudden snowfall, which started this morning. They said those who died due to adverse climatic conditions included 14-year-old Roshni Banu and six-year-old Affu Ahmed. Both died in the Warwan valley in Kishtwar district. The sources further said hundreds of people were believed to be stranded in the mountain ranges of Pir Panjal, Shivalik, Trikuta and Zojila. The Indian Air Force (IAF) has pressed into service its helicopters to drop food packets in remote areas where the nomads were believed to be stranded. They said reaching out to them was proving difficult because of the thick blanket of snow that was preventing choppers from landing. There is no exact count of people stranded in such areas. However, the IAF was continuing with its relief operations from its station at Udhampur. Reports said a team of at least 30 officials from revenue, police, health and veterinary departments, besides other local officials had been trying to establish contact with the affected nomads. A control room had been set up at Inshan. Meanwhile, demanding appropriate compensation for the affected nomads, president of the Tribal Research and Cultural Foundation, Dr Javed Rahi said, “A natural calamity of this magnitude has shattered their economy. If they are not given compensation, they are likely to take to begging as they do not have any source of income other than livestock rearing.” “Most of the species of goats and sheep, besides Bakarwali dogs are rare. We suspect some of them might have gone extinct,” he added. |
