Trickster dupes man of lakhs
Fatehgarh Sahib, May 31 The businessman, Satnam Singh, carrying the bag, was on way to his office. He was sitting in the rear. He told his driver to get the biscuits exchanged from the shop. A passerby told him to look at the oil leaking from the car. As soon as the driver and the businessman opened the bonnet and checked the engine, an unidentified man took away the bag. The businessman raised the alarm and searched for the man, but to no avail. The police was informed and senior police officers reached the spot. A description of the man was noted down by the police and a search was on to nab him. The police failed to find any clue so far. Police officials investigating the matter disclosed in the morning that the amount was nearly Rs 16 lakh, but said in the evening that the amount had not been disclosed yet. The police registered a case in this connection. The amount was not mentioned in the copy of the FIR. |

Patiala, May 31 Kharar team were all out at 177 in 32.2 overs. Yash 57, Sahil 33 and Karamjot 42 (not out) were the main scorers for Kharar team. Atul of BECC took five wickets for 21 runs and he was well supported by Ashish Karki who claimed two wickets for 30 runs. The hosts achieved the target in 33.4 overs after loosing just two wickets. World No-Tobacco Day
Ambala, May 31 He said nicotine replacement therapy was available in India to help smokers quit the bad habit. He urged doctors to reach out to masses. He spoke on the ill-effects of tobacco consumption and warned pregnant women from chewing tobacco, as it could disable the newborn. Members of Shri Hari Charitable Trust pledged to create awareness among youngsters. They also made a human chain. Others present on the occasion were senior medical officer Dr G Kumar, nodal officer Dr Archana Jindal, Dr BB Lala and Kuldip Singh. An exhibition was also organised at the Civil Hospital to mark the day. Patiala: 5 Punjab Battalion, NCC, Patiala, in collaboration with Sri Guru Nanak Education Help Society, Patiala, organised a rally against tobacco chewing. Students of various schools and colleges gathered at National High School, Old Lal Bagh, Dharampura Bazar, to take out the rally. Around 500 students took part in the rally. The rally passed through Twakali Moad, Bhasha Bhavan, Sheran Wala Gate, Nabha Gate, Anardana Chowk and culminated on the school campus. Kaka Ram Verma from Red Cross and Commanding officer of the battalion Col Surjit Singh and school principal Harinder Kaur spoke on the ill-effects of drugs and encouraged students to keep away from the bad habit. Specialists are the casualty
Kalka, May 31 As a result, hundreds of patients, who come from far off places to the hospital, are suffering daily. Patients alleged that they have been facing inconvenience due to the non-availability of doctors in the hospital. The sources confirmed that out of three specialists, one has gone on leave for three months, eye surgeon has gone on deputation to a hospital in Panchkula, Sector 6, and one has resigned from the duty. The hospital is in dire need of an emergency medical officer (EMO), the sources added. Due to EMOs shortage, the hospital has been putting specialists on post-mortem/casualty duty. Notably, despite directives, the director general, health services, Haryana, and the financial commissioner and principal secretary to government, Haryana, Health Department, specialists in Community Health Centre, Kalka, were posted as casualty medical officer. Sources in the hospital said the finance commissioner and principal secretary to Haryana government, health department, had issued a letter to all civil surgeons/PMOs/medical superintendents of Haryana on May 19, 2009, regarding optimum utilisation of specialists, medical officers in the hospital. The letter also interpreted that it had come to notice that medical officers, PG/Diploma holders were being put on post-mortem/casualty duty and other miscellaneous duties in the hospitals and they were not being given an opportunity to do OPD/IPD in their respective specialty. The letter also directed SMOs of the hospital to ensure that specialists, who could render specialist services, were not detailed for post-mortem/casualty duty and other miscellaneous duties. The sources said on September 29, 2009, the director general, health services, Haryana, issued a letter and on January 28, 2010, a reminder regarding the violation of directives was also served upon the hospital. But in Kalka CHC, the specialists were still posted as casualty medical officers by the hospital administration, and were also deputed on special duties in sub-centres, in outreach camps and on VIP duties. A special drive has already been launched to recruit medical officers having diploma/PG qualifications to facilitate the patients. |

Police Inaction
Kalka, May 31 According to sources, the accident occurred on Sunday night on the NH-22 in which a recklessly driven tanker hit a pedestrian Prema, who died on the spot. The residents, of the Preet Nagar Bangala Basti adjacent to the Kalka Railway Station, alleged that after the accident, the body was lying on the road. The police delayed to reach the spot and also failed to register a case. Subsequently, due to the police inaction they blocked the Kalka-Shimla Highway this morning, which disrupted the traffic for more than one hour. The traffic was resumed only with the intervention of the Kalka SDM. According to the police, on a complaint of Nachhtro, wife of the deceased, a case was registered at 1:30 am and the truck driver Vishal, who hails from Himachal Pradesh, has been arrested. |

Power plants of factory inspected
Dera Bassi, May 31 Pollution control board officials inspected the power plants and pollution control devices that have been set up to control the pollution. Samples of smoke were taken and pollution control device, electro static precipitator was also checked. SE pollution control board Karunesh Garg expressed doubt that chimneys of power plants of the factory were causing ash due to defect in the pollution control device. Pollution control board official assured that inspection would continue. Notably, Nahar Spinning factory has two co-generation power plants of 12 mega watt and 5mega watt that have been reportedly causing ash problem for nearby residents. Jasbir Singh, sarpanch of nearby Lehli village, said dangerous ash from the factory was causing eye ailments for several persons in the village. Private doctors in Lalru admitted that cases of eye infection were on the rise due to harmful ash of Nahar factory. Meanwhile, Lokesh Dhawan, head of power plants of Nahar factory, said as per norms pollution control devices have been set up in the power plant units and were working properly. |

Chandigarh, May 31 According to prosecution, on June 15, 2004, Bachan was driving a tipper when he hit a cyclist near Sukhna petrol pump in Sector 28. While the driver fled the scene leaving his vehicle behind, the cyclist succumbed to his injuries. Later, the local police arrested Bachan and booked him under Sections 304 and 279 of the IPC. |

Patiala sneak into final
Chandigarh, May 31 In the first semifinal, the match was almost in favour of Chandigarh when Patiala came back strongly from behind with the help of 196 by Hiamnshu Chawla and surprised Chandigarh by chasing down a huge total of 504. They were at 252 for 5 when the third day play was over yesterday. Overnight batsmen Himanshu Chawla and Amrinder took the score to 278 before Amrinder was stumped by Simrat Bawa off Anil Sihag for 14. Chawla and Perry Goel stitched a vital partnership of 125 runs for the seventh wicket. Goel chipped in 59 off 84 balls before being trapped in front of wickets by Sihag. Patiala lads were at 403 for 7, exactly 100 runs away from the win. Chawla was joined by Vicky Sharma and the duo added 34 runs for the eighth wicket. At this stage, Patiala needed 67 runs with just two wickets in hand. Mohit Mohindra, along with Chawla, got their act together and the two took the total to 503 just two runs away from the victory. At this stage, it came as a jolt to Patiala with Chawla losing his wicket off Anshul Tripathi. Chawla was just four runs short of his double century and his team two runs away from the victory. Rock Rovers get better of ONGC
Chandigarh, May 31 The first half went barren. But in the second half, the Rock Rovers took lead in the 20th minute through Gaurav, who in the next minute bulged the lead to 2-0 through an excellent pass from Davinder. In the 24th minute, the ONGC reduced the margin through Arun, but the efforts of Gurdeep Junior bore fruit for Rovers, when he bulged the net in the 27th minute. Gaurav again struck in the 28th minute to make the score 4-1. In the last minute of the match, Dharmendra made it 4-2. Gurdeep Junior was declared man of the match. In the second match of the day, BPCL drubbed CISF by 13-6. Jarnail Singh and Karnail Singh pumped in five goals each during the course,while Sher Singh, Irshad Ali and Prabhdeep contributed one goal each. Training camp for soccer probables
Chandigarh, May 31 Perhaps, this is for the first time that the camp, which is on the verge of culmination, was stretched for a month. Earlier, it used to be held for a week or maximum for 10 days. “The immediate target for holding a month-long camp is to qualify for the pool,” said coach Tajinder Kumar under whose supervision all preparations during the camp were done. Tajinder had also captained the Indian football team and presently is senior coach of the Chandigarh Sports Council in the state-run Chandigarh Football Academy. “I am satisfied with the training schedule of the camp where the players used to undergo special skill and endurance training in two sessions a day. We have developed a team spirit among the probables here. I hope this time we will not only qualify for a pool but also be able to do good after that,” said Tajinder. Notably out of total 22 probables, there are as many as 14 players from the Chandigarh Football Academy. Out of these 14 players from the state-run academy, 12 were also a part of the school national team, which had won gold in the National Games. The selection of final 20 will take place in a day or two. The tournament will kick off from June 5 at Kolkata where the Chandigarh team will play their opening match against Gujarat. |
