Villagers blame it on health department
40 admitted to private hospital in Ambala; more cases reported
Our Correspondent

Ambala, May 23
The untimely death of two teen-aged girls due to a mysterious disease has annoyed residents of Samlehri village. The disease has affected a large number of residents and more cases were reported in the village today.

The agitated villagers are holding the Health Department responsible for the death of the two girls. They said that the disease had been prevailing in the village for past one fortnight but the doctors could not diagnose it. A team of specialised doctors of PGI Chandigarh should have been summoned to the village, they said.

Seeing the disease spreading its tentacles, the villagers have panicked. Some of the villagers are temporarily shifting their kin to relatives’ houses residing in other villages. A few villagers have got their patients admitted to private nursing homes instead of taking them to the civil hospital.

Additional Deputy Commissioner Renu Phulia along with senior officers of the Public Health and Health Department visited the affected village. Former Zila Parishad chairman Brahmpal Rana also accompanied them.

The villagers told the ADC that the contaminated drinking water could be one of the reasons behind the mysterious disease. They said the drinking water pipelines coming across the village pond had leakage into it. They said that they had made repeated complaints to the officials of the Public Health Department but no one had taken the complaints seriously.

On the other hand, the officers of the Health Department were of the view that mustard oil being used by the villagers could be one of the causes. They said that one of the shopkeepers of the village was bringing the mustard oil from Uttar Pardesh and adulteration could not be ruled out. The Health Department made an announcement in the village this morning in which it advised the villagers not to purchase eatable items, including mustard oil, from the village shops till the matter was solved.

Deputy Commissioner Samir Pal Saro said a team of doctors and paramedical staff would be present in the village round the clock to keep a close watch on the situation. He said that 40 affected villagers had been admitted to a private nursing home at Ambala Cantt, where two senior doctors of civil hospital had also been deployed.
