Bricks line the street following a land dispute at Tarf Kara Bara in Ludhiana A dispute over land in Tarf Kara Bara on Bahadur K. Road here turned ugly today afternoon when some area residents allegedly assaulted several members of a family over a vacant plot of 500 square yards. Several people including women were injured in the incident that occurred in Baazigar colony. Allegations and counterallegations flowed between the two sides involved, blaming each other for the violence.

Popular social networking sites like Facebook and Orkut have cast their spell on teenage and even pre-teen children who, watching grown-ups surfing these sites, become easily addicted to them. Delay in justice today led the kin of a gang rape victim to come out on streets and lodge a protest outside the Police Commissioner’s office.

Camp on kharif crops

Ludhiana, April 29
The directorate of extension education, PAU, organised a two-day training camp on improved practices for kharif crops for agricultural officers, agricultural development officers, district extension specialists and faculty of krishi vigyan kendras. The training camp will conclude tomorrow.

Poem recitation competition

The Senior Humanities Forum of Kundan Vidya Mandir, city campus, organised a poem recitation competition here yesterday. Feelings of happiness, love and sense of duty were reflected in the poems selected by the students. The pronunciation, presentation and performance of each child were immaculate. Judges Reena Kapoor and Shashi Goyal had a tough time choosing the winners. Headmistress Namita Raj Singh lauded and appreciated the efforts of the students and the teachers and also felicitated and encouraged the students to participate actively in the future competitions.

ETT teachers protest census duty

Showing resentment against the census duties, ETT teachers today staged protest at mini secretariat, outside the office of the Deputy Commissioner, Ludhiana. These teachers have termed the assignment of duties to be impracticable.

1 held with 200 gm opium
Mullanpur Dakha, April 29
The Dakha police nabbed a youth along with 200 gm of opium on the outskirts of Rurka village on Wednesday evening. Accused Sakandar Singh of Bhutta village, near Dehlon, was coming to the village on his scooter (PB 10 AW 1977). On seeing the police naka, he tried to escape but was overpowered by the police party. On search conducted on his scooter, the opium was recovered, concealed in the glove compartment of the scooter. A case under Sections 18, 25, 61, 85 of the NDPS Act was registered against the accused.

The local police yesterday evening booked a town municipal councillor and another person in a case of cheating. Both have been accused of being involved in assisting the parents of a newborn child in getting the birth of their son recorded twice in the municipal council records in 2008.

The greed for money claimed the life of a 27-year-old woman here last night. Mona was allegedly done to death by her in-laws for dowry.
