Levy of parking fee irks vehicle owners
Our Correspondent

Kalka, April 27
Resentment prevails among owners of light and heavy vehicles, including auto-rickshaw drivers, taxi operators and daily commuters, over the imposition of parking fee outside the Kalka railway station for three months.

They said they had been parking their vehicles along the railway road free of cost for the past three decades. However, on the directive of the divisional railway manager (DRM), the department of railway, Ambala division, recently imposed the parking fee.

They alleged that parking rates were higher than even those prevalent in Chandigarh. They said in Sector 17, Chandigarh, only Rs 5 were charged for light vehicles, whereas the authorities at the local railway station were charging an exorbitant Rs 30 for light vehicles and Rs 40 for heavy vehicles for the first six hours. They rued that the department had not earmarked any parking area for them. Subsequently, most of the auto-rickshaws were forced to park on the premises of the railway station.

Accidents abound despite four-laning
Parmod Mehta

Dera Bassi, April 27
The four-laning of the Chandigarh-Ambala section of the national highway has failed to bring down the number of road accidents on the stretch.

In the past three months alone, 31 persons have lost their lives and another 45 have been injured in road accidents at Lalru, Dera Bassi and Bhankerpur here.

Police data reveals that since January, 25 men and three women have died and another 35 men, nine women and one child have been injured in road accidents.

One of the major reasons is the absence of designated pedestrian crossings on busy sections of the highway.

Speeding motorists are often caught unawares by pedestrians emerging out of nowhere.

Incidentally, the maximum numbers of accidents have taken place in Dera Bassi town. Still, the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has failed to provide a flyover or roundabout at Dera Bassi.

A local resident, Anmol Singh, says though overbridges have been constructed at Dappar and Lalru, no roundabout or overbridge has been constructed at Dera Bassi.

Sushil Kumar of Mukandpur village rues the absence of a proper crossing at the Dera Bassi bus stand.

“We are forced make a detour of 4 km to cross the main road,” says Hemant Kumar, a local resident.

Residents have sought the construction of a crossing or a flyover at Dera Bassi.

People of Lalru and nearby villages have also been facing difficulties at Lalru.

A former sarpanch of Aganpur village has sought the construction a roundabout near the PSEB office at Lalru.

Training Programme
CFA may not send team to Germany
Akash Ghai
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, April 27
Uncertainty continues to shroud the training-cum-exposure programme to Germany for the under-17 Chandigarh Football Academy (CFA) team this year.

Though UT Sports Secretary claimed that the tour would certainly be on after completion of certain formalities, both players and some UT sports officials said they were doubtful whether the German football club with which the local administration had a tie- up, would give them fresh dates.

As per the current schedule, the training session is slated to begin from May 6 and last until May 26. However, the team is unlikely to be able to meet the schedule now.

As of now, neither the officials nor the players have been provided with any information regarding the programme.

"We do not know whether or not the team would go to Germany or not, even if so, we do not know when? Nobody has told us anything about the programme even though hardly 10 days are left", complained the players while requesting anonymity at the academy. Even the senior officials preferred to remain tight-lipped on the issue. However, unofficial sources stated that some of the top brass of the administration were of the view that foreign trips that cost the authorities a hefty amount of money, had failed to yield the desired results and thus the trips were cancelled last year.

They also pointed out that there was a clash of interests amongst some top sports authorities regarding foreign trips. Asked for his comments, Finance Secretary Sanjay Kumar said, "This was not the case, but certainly, the authorities would be assessing what improvements did these trips bring in players' performances."

Yet Kumar also went on to say that the recent volcanic eruption in Iceland leading to disruption of flights across Europe was the reason behind the delay in decision.
