Rs 12,000 stolen
: Miscreants broke opened the locks of the hall of Ram Sharnam Bhavan at Lal Chowk and took about Rs 12,000 from the donation box, pramukh sevadar Dr J.D. Verma said. The matter has been reported to SHO Raj Kumar.

Wheat purchase: To take stock of the wheat procurement, Deputy Commissioner Shruti Singh visited procurement centres at Rahon, Phanweran, Bazidpur and Garcha in the district on Tuesday. The Deputy Commissioner interacted with farmers, members of the arhtiyas’ association and representatives of the various procurement agencies.

Special lecture: Dr D.R. Vij delivered a special lecture on “Personality development” at Amardeep Singh Shergill Memorial College, Mukandpur, near here, on Tuesday.

Samples: The Health Department adopted the pick-and-choose policy while taking samples of some eatables in the town on Tuesday. A team of health officials, headed by the District Health took samples from a sweet shop, two bakeries and two karyana shops. The Tribune learnt that big karyana, sweet, bakery and confectionery shops were spared.

Science camp from May 20: Under the “Inspire Scheme” of Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, a science camp for students of Class XI and Class XII will be organised on the Panjab University campus from May 20-24. Students with percentage above the decided cut off in Class X are eligible to attend the camp. Senior scientists will interact with students during the camp. Visits to laboratories will also be arranged during the camp.

Students plant saplings: A week-long Earth Day celebrations commenced at Ajit Karam Singh International Public School on Wednesday. The day started with a skit presented by Class VIII students. Students of primary classes prepared pots and planted saplings on the school premises. They also adopted some trees. A poster-making competition was also organised for the students of the senior wing.

Shops on ground floor: The Chandigarh administration has decided to allow the use of ground floors of the premises allotted under different rehabilitation schemes in various parts of the city for commercial purposes, including mobile repair shop, barber shop, TV/radio repair shop, computer centre, stationary and electric shops. Small environmental-friendly, cottage activities like boutique, beauty parlour and tailoring shops have already been allowed by the administration.

One held for rape bid: A local court today framed charges against Ramesh Kumar (26) in a rape case of a minor. The police arrested Ramesh on the charges of attempt to rape. He tried to rape a 16-year-old by threatening her at Dadu Majra Colony here on October 22, 2009. The court has also dismissed his bail application. All prosecution witnesses are summoned for May 28 for the evidence of the prosecution.

Appointed: The Haryana Pradesh Congress Committee(HPCC) has appointed Pran Nath Sharma the district general secretary of the committee in Ambala (urban). Sharma is also the president of the Ambala Senior Citizens Welfare Association.

Seminar: A seminar on “Innovative Product Design and Development” was held at the PEC University of Technology today. Dr Kuldeep Singh Sangwan of mechanical engineering at the BITS, Pilani, was the key speaker.

Office-bearers elected: Pawandeep Singh Jolly was elected president of the district unit of the Haryana Patrakar Sangh on Wednesday. In a meeting of the HPS held here, Pankaj Dhingra was elected general secretary, Arun Bansal and Inderjeet Adhikari vice-presidents, Mohinder Kumar secretary and Ramesh Bishnoi was elected cashier of the sangh. Bhupinder Singh Panniwala, outgoing president of the sangh, presided over the meeting. Surinder Bhatia, vice-president of the state unit of the HPS, and Nand Kishore Ladha, president of the Press Club, Sirsa, were present on the occasion.

HPSC announces examination dates
: The Haryana Public Service Commission has announced the dates of screening test and examinations for the posts of Dental Surgeon, HCS (Executive Branch) and Assistant Engineer (Civil). Stating this here recently, a spokesman for the commission said the screening test for the posts of Dental Surgeon in the Health Department would be held on May 15 and the preliminary examination for the post of HCS (Executive Branch) for specially abled would be conducted on May 17. The examination (Class II Examination-2009) for the post of Assistant Engineer (Civil) in the Public Health Engineering Department would be held from May 18 to May 22. He said the time and venue for these examinations would be mentioned in the admit card to be sent to all eligible candidates in due course of time.

2 injured in leopard attack: Two persons, including a woman, were injured when a leopard entered into their house in the Tangmarg area of Baramulla district. Those injured were identified as Saifuddin Lone and Mymoona, the police said. The police informed the wildlife authorities, who neutralised the leopard.

1 killed, 4 hurt in mishaps: One person died and four others were injured in road accidents in the Kashmir valley since Tuesday. One person died when hit by a speeding vehicle at Sandipora in Budgam district, the police said.
