Shops, house burgled:
A house in Nai Abadi and two shops in Dharam Nagari were burgled last night, sources said. As per details, unidentified person escaped with ornaments and cash from the residence of Parkash Chander of Nai Abadi on Saturday.

Man commits suicide: One Kashmir Singh reportedly committed suicide by hanging from a ceiling fan in village Koni of Hindumalkot area last night, police sources said. The deceased was a frequent consumer of alcohol and is survived by six daughters and his wife, the police added. Meanwhile, a report from Sangria said Bhala Ram drowned while fetching water from Sadul branch canal last night. His body was recovered on Saturday.

Shop owner, kin assaulted
: Some unidentified persons attacked a sweetshop owner identified as Kewal Manchanda and his nephew Sunny Manchanda in the Bazaar Durga Dass area in the city. The shopkeepers went to the police station and were enraged when they noticed some attackers already present inside the police station. Later, they raised slogans against the police and demanded action against the culprits. DSP Joginder Singh tried to pacify the shopkeepers. As per details, Sunny had a dispute with some college boys, who with help of some anti-social elements allegedly attacked him. — OC

Body found
: Following the recovery of the body of Kuldip Singh of Devi Dass from the Mukerian Hydel Channel near Sanghowal-Bambowal, the Hazipur police has registered a case under section 302 of the IPC on the complaint of the father of the deceased last evening. According to police sources, Kuldip Singh was missing from the house since 31st March 2010.

No progress in abduction case: A deputation of activists of CPM today met SHO, Chabbewal, to know about the progress of the recovery of a newborn male child of a migrant labourer, who was abducted by two motorcycle borne youths from a jhugi at Adda Bahowal eight days ago. The deputation was not satisfied with the way the case was going.

Habit-forming drugs seized
: In a joint inspection conducted by drug inspectors Kulwinder Singh and Karam Sachdeva of Jalandhar and Kapurthala, respectively, at a medical store in Dilkhusha Market here, habit-forming drugs worth Rs 1.5 lakh were seized today. The raid was conducted on the premises of Mahalaxmi Medicos. Tablets worth Rs 42,000, capsules worth Rs 49,000 and syrups that were confiscated were reportedly without any sale and purchase record.

IMA launches website: With an aim to strengthen ties between masses and medicos, IMA, Jalandhar launched its website here. The website was launched by Finance Minister Manpreet Badal on April 8. It contains a directory, along with addresses and contact numbers, of all the doctors based in every nook and corner of Jalandhar.

Wheat procurement:
Wheat procurement in Phagwara Grain Market got started here today. Technical Education Minister Swarana Ram said the government was committed to take all possible steps to facilitate the farmers.

188 cases settled: As many as 188 cases, out of total 211, were settled at a Lok Adalat organised by Civil Judge, Senior Division, Arun Aggarwal and Civil Judge, Junior Division, Jatinderpal Singh here on Saturday. A recovery of Rs 4,07,100 was awarded in the adalat.

Girl killed, father hurt
: Aman Kaur (16) was killed while her father Bhola Singh was seriously injured when the cycle they were riding on was hit by a car near Chabal village, 18 km from here, this afternoon. Bhola Singh was admitted to a private hospital in Amritsar whereas the body of Aman was sent to the Civil Hospital for post-mortem. The driver of the car, who fled from the spot leaving the car behind, has been booked under sections 304A, 279, 427, 337 and 338 of the IPC.

UHBVN invites bids
: The Uttar Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam (UHBVN) has invited bids for conversion of existing low tension lines into 11 kV lines i.e. high voltage distribution system under which the existing tubewell consumers of Dhand, Cheeka and Sewan area in Kaithal district will have their own independent transformers under the ongoing “Apna Transformer Yojna”. The estimated cost of the project is Rs.164.53 crore. A nigam spokesman said here on Saturday the general pre-qualification criteria, technical pre-qualification criteria and financial pre-qualification criteria of the bid were available on the website www.uhbvn.com.

Tyres stolen
: Some miscreants stole tyres of two vehicles - a tanker that was parked on the Rewari-Bawal road close to the bus stop of Bithwana village and a tractor-trailer that was parked on the Kalka road here on Friday. The Model Town police has registered cases of theft on complaints filed by the two drivers.

Threat call: Krishna Kumar, a resident of Jhabua village and a dismissed employee of Suraj Malting Limited, Banipur (Bawal), allegedly threatened to kill factory proprietor Mukesh Kumar Agarwal and contrive abduction of his daughters on his phone. The Bawal police has registered a case of offensive utterance and criminal intimidation against the accused on a complaint lodged by Mukesh Agarwal.

3 miscreants held: The Kosli police raided a hideout on the Kosli-Nahar road on Friday and apprehended three miscreants who were reportedly planning to loot passing vehicles. They have been identified as Pappu of Mewat district and Nizam and Arif of Palwal district. The police also seized an iron pipe and a torch from their possession. They were on Saturday produced in the court of SDJM PK Lal in Kosli, who remanded them in 14-day judicial custody.

3 injured in cylinder blast
: Three members of a family were injured when a gas cylinder blasted in their house at Bari Brahmna on Saturday. Bari Brahmna SHO Jitender Singh said three persons, including women, received burn injuries and were shifted to the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) in Jammu. A team has been sent to the spot to ascertain the exact reason behind the explosion.”

Workshop on first aid: A Punjab-based private hospital, Amandeep Hospital, in collaboration with the traffic police, Jammu, organised a first aid training and workshop at the Jammu club on Saturday. Dr Pankaj Soni gave an audio and video presentation on first aid and awareness on traffic management. SSP (traffic) Zahid Naseem Manhas was also present on the occasion.

J&K Bank opens 76th ATM: J&K Bank opened its 76th ATM at Greater Kailash in New Delhi on Saturday. Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer of the bank Ashok Mehta inaugurated it. Mehta said the number of monthly transactions on J&K Bank’s ATMs had gone up to 20 lakh.

Suicide by man: Ankur, a New Delhi resident, allegedly committed suicide by consuming some poisonous substance in the Jammu region on Saturday. He was admitted to the GMCH, Jammu, where he died. In another incidents, Tyoti Devi, a resident of Dai Chack, and Khalida Begum, a resident of Bathandi, were admitted to the GMCH, after they had consumed some poisonous substance.

Woman commits suicide: A 25-year-old woman reportedly committed suicide by hanging herself at her house at Jagti in Nagrota here. The police said Neelam, wife of Surat Singh, took the extreme step on Friday. However, no suicide note was found. “She was married a year ago and was on good terms with her in-laws,” it said.

Body of newborn found: The police recovered the body of a newborn baby from Nallah Sindh near Fraw Gund in the Ganderbal area on Saturday.
