Class XII students attempt suicide, girl dies
Ropar, April 4 While the girl died on the spot, the boy escaped with injuries. In his statement to the GRP police, the boy, Manpreet Singh from Niashahr Badala village in Kharar said he was in love with the girl from Sakrulla village near
Gharuan. The parents of both boy and girl were against their marriage. The couple appeared for Class XII exam on Saturday where they decided to commit suicide. “The girl was not willing to elope and marry. She said it was better to die than bring disgrace to the family,” GRP officials said. Both reached the Sutlej in Ropar at around midnight to jump into the river and end their lives. However, they could not summon up the courage and decided to instead jump in front of the train. The couple then walked to the Nangal railway station. At around 4 am, an engine passed from Ropar to
Nangal. Both jumped in front of the train. While Manpreet Singh fell at the side of the track, the front portion of the train hit the girl and she died on the spot. “Assuming her to be still alive, Manpreet picked her up and carried her to a nearby railway cabin and informed the railway employees,” the GRP officials said. The police has booked Manpreet for attempt to commit suicide. The police has initiated inquest proceedings under Section 174 of the

Mob breaks road divider
Kharar, April 4 The residents alleged that the street was in the name of Shaurya Chakra recipient Shaheed Major Singh Harminderpal and the highway authorities must leave space to cross the road. Police officials reached the spot and pacified the agitating residents. XEN, CWD, Karnail Singh said a complaint in this connection had been lodged by them. The highway authorities said the divider was for the safety of commuters and more openings for commuters would pose a danger for commuters and the area residents. Police officials who reached the spot said investigation was on to identify those who had broken the divider and a case would be registered after completing the inquiry. |

Chhatbir zoo goes hi-tech
Chhat (Banur), April 4 “This will facilitate not only interaction with the other zoo officials, but also with the head office,” said the zoo officials. Presently, reporting work to officials at Chandigarh is done manually involving paper work. Inter-connectivity now means lesser paper work and expeditious completion of office work. Specially designed software would help in interacting with zookeepers not only in India, but also all over the world, said the officials. The zoo directors, from 20 zoos of the country, have already undergone six- day workshop held in Chandigarh to operate the system and apply it at their respective places. Officials have learnt the software to be used in communication and other benefits of interlinking. The data of zoos would be uploaded and made available on computers. Zoo officials would also interact with each other on daily basis. Presently, officials record birth and death of various species and this data is sent to Central Zoo Authority
(CZA) on regular basis. Internet facility would now help in accessing every minute detail among other zoos creating a vast database that could be developed for the betterment of the zoo. All the major zoos of the world have already registered through Internet that helps in exchanging species and negotiation with zoo officials. |

Chandigarh, April 4 The High Court had quashed the FIR in this regard recently. The scam had come to the fore in 2007 after the CBI detected building violations at the Fun Republic Multiplex in Mani Majra. After an independent inquiry, the CBI registered a case for allegedly causing loss to the government through building violations and misusing public posts. Panchkula, April 4 It was on March 27 when Nipun Gupta was allegedly kidnapped by Ratik with the help of Lavish Gugnani (19), a resident of Modern Housing Complex, Sitansu Puri (21), a resident of Sector 9, and Sahil Negi (18), a resident of Mansa Devi Complex, Sector 5. Another accused Abhisekh (22), a resident of NAC, Mani Majra, was arrested for selling SIM cards to the accused on fake documents. Lavish and Sitanshu were students of Khalsa College, Chandigarh, while Abhishek runs a shop dealing in mobile phones at Mani Majra. Shahil Negi, son of a bank official, was also a student. Nipun, son of an industrialist, was kidnapped by the accused and demanded Rs 80 lakh as the ransom. However, the police managed to recover the boy just after two hours of the kidnapping. Two cars used in the crime were also recovered. The police managed to arrest Ratik from the Sector 7 market today evening. He will be produced in the court tomorrow, said the police. |

2 thieves nabbed red-handed
Zirakpur, April 4 One of his accomplices, Prema Singh, a resident of Phase VIII, Mohali, sustained serious injuries when he jumped off the second floor of the building while trying to escape from the spot, but was nabbed by residents. The police said two other miscreants, who managed to flee from the scene, would be arrested soon. The incident took place around 1 pm. One of the labourers at the construction site noticed them and raised the alarm. Local residents nabbed Govind and Prema. The other two thieves fled with the sanitary items. Prema sustained multiple fractures and was rushed to the Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32. A case was registered. |

Chandigarh, April 4 The police arrested Sunny from near the traffic lights point, Sector 38-West, yesterday and recovered 400 grams of charas from his possession. A case under Section 20 of the NDPS Act has been registered.

Drunk cop hits cyclist, scooterist
Chandigarh, April 4 The police confirmed late in the night that the accused, Sarjagvinder Singh, was found drunk in his medical examination and a case of causing injuries due to rash and negligent driving was been registered against him. He was arrested from his residence, said the SHO of the Sector 3 police station, inspector Mahabir Singh. The policeman, who did not stop after hitting the cyclist, was given a chase by the villagers. He kept on driving, carrying the bicycle on the bonnet of his Maruti car. The cyclist, later identified as Kheru Ram of the same village, reportedly suffered serious injuries in the mishap and was admitted to the Government Multi-Speciality Hospital, Sector 16. According to eyewitnesses, the car stopped after hitting a scooterist, identified as Sushil Kumar. The car driver fled the spot, leaving his vehicle behind. Onlookers surrounded the vehicle and called the police. The police, after learning that a policeman was involved in the mishap, inititally tried to play down the incident. At this, infuriated villagers began protesting against the police, following which the SHO reached there. Additional force was also called to bring the situation under control. The sarpanch of the village also reached the spot. |

Chandigarh, April 4 Oscar Bansal had won the Mauritius International Tournament in March and than he flew to participate in the Kenya International Tournament of World Badminton Federation where strong and world top ranking players of Scotland, Indonesia, Austria, South Africa, Nigeria, Egypt, Slovakia, etc. were also keen to grab this prestigious title. Although Oscar was an unseeded player, he defeated all top ranking players. In the final, Oscar defeated top seeded Scottish player Alistair Casey in three closely contested games. Deceptive strokes of the city boy showed him the path of victory and he won by 14-21, 21-13, 21-19. With this victory, Oscar has become second Indian who won this prestigious tournament, as Chetan Anand won this tournament in 2008.
