Nagar panchayat status for Lalru
Dera Bassi, March 29 Local MLA Jasjit Singh Bunny released copies of the notification during a press conference at Lalru today. The notification has been signed by Rakesh Kumar Verma, secretary to the Government of Punjab, department of local government. Exercising the power conferred under Section 4 (2) of the Punjab Municipal Act, 1911 as amended Act No. 11 of 1994, the Punjab Governor has brought the areas falling in Lalru, Alamgir, Dehar, Kauli Majra, Samahaleri, Lehli, Dappar, Gholumajra, Jlalpur, Chaundheri and Hasanpur under the nagar panchayat. These villages will be transitional areas for the purpose of constituting the nagar panchayat. According to notification, the step has been taken by considering the population of the area, density of population, percentage of employment in non-agricultural activities, economic importance, besides generating revenue for local administration and ensuring the development of the area in a planned manner. After releasing the copies of the notification, Bunny said development activities would now pick up pace in the area. He said the constituency would receive Rs 8 crore for development works within one month. He added that the process of constituting the nagar panchayat would start soon and the executive officer and the administrator would initiate their respective works. Copies of the notification have been sent to the authorities concerned. |

Fatehgarh Sahib, March 29 The millers said such decisions were in the favour of industrialists. However, regarding the decision of adjusting the refund of increased rates in the six months bills from April 1, the millers said the bills should be adjusted instead in two months. District president Inderjeet Singh rued that the millers were yet to give delivery of government custom milling of rice of 2009-10 as lack of storage space in government godowns prevented the same. He said even now the rice shellers of Punjab were full to their capacity with rice and milling was delaying. The millers demanded that the government should intervene to get the milling process at a faster pace. |

15-hr power cuts irk Kalka residents
Kalka, March 29 The residents are deprived of electricity for 13 to 15 hours daily, which has caused great inconvenience to them. Subsequently, they have great resentment towards the department of the UHBVN and the state government. The residents are sore over the erratic power supply for the past two months and allege that the official agencies have been indifferent towards their plight. They rue that it is especially harsh on the students who are preparing for their annual examinations. |

Man booked for killing brother
Ambala, March 29 The body of Jagdish (35) was found hanging from a tree in the cremation ground of Saphera village yesterday. Earlier, the police believed it to be a case of suicide. However, Bala Devi, widow of the deceased, lodged a complaint in Mahesh Nagar police station alleging that her brother-in-law Dev Kumar had killed her husband and to make it look like a suicide case he hanged his body with a tree. She further said her husband had a tiff with her brother-in-law over property dispute. The postmortem was conducted in the Civil Hospital, Ambala Cantt. Rajbir Singh, SHO, Mahesh Nagar police station, said a case had been registered under Section 302 and an investigation had begun. |

Chandigarh, March 29 In his petition, Abhineet Taneja from Panchkula had sought formulation of a policy on holding interviews for admissions to MBA and other courses. The Bench also directed that 50 per cent of the amount would be recovered from the salary of officials concerned.Taneja had asserted that a substantial number of institutions conducting courses in management were collecting large sums of money by way of application fee. But the money was not being refunded to those not called for group discussions and interviews. |

Two held for thrashing cop
Chandigarh, March 29 Police sources said a special anti-snatching naka had been set up last night. A police team spotted two motorcyclists, one of whom was riding without a helmet. The police stopped them and their breath was reeking of alcohol. They started arguing with the police, saying that the naka had been set up to harass people. They also claimed that they were employed as drivers at the GMCH-32 and asked the cops to let them go. The SHO of the Sector 39 police station said the motorcyclists tried to escape from the spot and two home guard volunteers stopped them. In the process, the motorcyclists manhandled them, besides a head constable, Dilbag Singh. They tore the uniform of the policemen and additional force was called to control them. The accused, identified as Bhag Singh and Darshan Singh of Mohali district, were taken to the Sector 16 GMSH and their medical examination confirmed that they were drunk. A case of causing hurt and obstructing a government servant from discharging his duty and common intention was registered against them. They were produced before a local court today and remanded in judicial custody. |

‘Missing’ Answersheets
Chandigarh, March 29 The police officials are trying to figure out the “play” behind the disappearance of the Class XI answersheets of music and computer science from the exam control room last week and the subsequent recovery through a parcel today. According to a senior official, it seems to be an outcome of an internal politics and to clarify that statements of various teachers and principals were recorded today. It may be noted that the answersheets of Class XI had gone “missing” from the school last week when an invigilator left them at the exam control room. The school evaded filing any FIR and tried to keep the matter under wraps. The matter, however, came to light when during a “search” meeting two of the teachers ended up having a scuffle. Meanwhile, the answersheets reappeared in the mail on Saturday, just around the time when a specially conducted re-test had been completed. Interestingly, the postmark on the envelope showed that the answersheets had been posted from a post office in Sector 19, located less than 2 km from the school. |

Mutilated body of woman found
Chandigarh, March 29 Sources in the government railway police said the police received information about the body lying near the track around 5:50 pm. A police team rushed to the spot and found the body. The victim was wearing a pink suit, anklets and brass bangles. She appeared to be belonging to the lower strata of society. The police did not find any article or document which could help in identifying her. Meanwhile, it shifted the body to General Hospital, Sector 6, Panchkula, for post-mortem examination. |

Widow commits suicide
Zirakpur, March 29 The investigating officer stated that the incident took place around 11 am when she was alone at her home. A suicide note was found where she stated that no one should be held responsible for her taking the extreme step, the investigating officer added. The police said according to her brother’s statement, she got married with Chetan Bassi of Ludhiana four years ago. Her husband had also allegedly committed suicide in February. After the death of her husband she was under depression, the police added. She is survived by her one-year-old son. The body was handed over to the family after the autopsy at Dera Bassi Civil Hospital. The police has initiated inquest proceedings under Section 174 of the CrPC. |

Speed thrills, but kills
Chandigarh, March 29 The other motorcyclist escaped with minor injuries. The victim was identified as Manpreet Singh, a resident of Sector 70, Mohali. Son of a manager with the Punjab and Sind Bank, Sector 17, Manpreet was a student of Gian Jyoti College, Mohali. He was on his way back home when the mishap occurred. According to the police, both motorcyclists were overspeeding and the collision took place when one of them attempted to overtake the other. The other motorcyclist, later identified as Anil Kumar, was trying to overtake Manpreet and both vehicles got entangled. They lost control over their motorcycles and fell. Manpreet’s motorcycle was dragged a distance before it hit a road berm. He sustained severe head injuries while Anil had a narrow escape. Manpreet was wearing a helmet, which was crushed due to the impact of the collision. They were rushed to the Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32, where Manpreet was declared dead on arrival. The police arrested Anil, an employee with a private firm, on the charges of causing death due to rash and negligent driving. |

Punjab, Jharkhand in final
Chandigarh, March 29 Punjab team surged ahead in the 23rd minute with Inderjit scoring through a penalty corner. Repeated attempts by Orissa to equalise the score failed to yield result. However, they succeeded in restricting Punjab’s lead to the solitary goal in the first half. In the second half, Punjab got a penalty corner in the 59th minute and Harpreet did not make a mistake. Punjab got seven penalty corners but could convert only one, whereas Orissa wasted all four penalty corners that came their way. In the second semifinal, AG Jharkhand thrashed Rajasthan 5-1. Jharkhand led 2-0 at half time with goals by Yakub Nag (23rd minute) and Bangra (24th minute). After the lemon break, Jharkhand scored three more goals through R Sorang (41st minute), TM Dang (45th minute) and A Bangra (62nd minute). Chandigarh, March 29 Batting first, Saupin Fighters scored 134 runs for the loss of three wickets. Raman 56 and Nipun 40 were the top-scorers. For LIC Juniors, Kartvya and Divyanshu bagged one wicket each. In reply, LIC Juniors could only manage to score 128 runs. Pranjay contributed 58. Shubham bagged two wickets while Parvesh bagged one wicket. Saupin won the match by six runs. In the second match of the day, MCM Blue Caps beat GNPS and CCA by six wickets. Trends in boxing discussed
Patiala, March 29 He congratulated the six boxers who had won gold medals during the Commonwealth Championship at New Delhi recently. He also appreciated the efforts of the boxing department for organising the workshop, which was aimed at raising the prospects of probables for the 2010 Commonwealth Games. On facilities available to boxers at the SAI, Ranawat said the boxers were being provided with best facilities and it was the ultimate training ground for boxers. During the morning session, chief national coach Gurbax Singh Sandhu discussed the latest trends in boxing. Cuban coach BI Fernandes elaborated on scoring patterns. Dr Rajdeep Kaur, in charge of sports sciences faculty, and national campers attended the workshop. TL Gupta, in charge, boxing, shed light on the scoring system and change in rules. He said players must be less than 16 years of age as on September 1, 2010 (i.e. a player must be born on or after September 1, 1994). The players must bring a photocopy of the birth certificate or a certificate from the respective institute confirming the date of birth, he added. |
