Compulsory computer
classes irk govt teachers
Patiala, March 12 All teachers have been asked to attend computer classes in two shifts. Those who have exam duty from 9 to 12 am or are not on exam duty are to attend the class from 1.20 pm to 3.20 pm whereas those who have evening duty have to attend the class from 11 am to 1 pm. The teachers who are on duties in the board exams have been asked to attend classes in their respective schools. The
most common reason for teachers’ disapproval of this idea is the
shortage of time for checking papers. “This is a very difficult
situation. While I am on duty in the morning shift, I have to take this
class in the afternoon, which leaves me with no time to check papers. As
per the directions, we are supposed to do table marking and cannot carry
papers home. We have been ordered to check all papers till March 20 so
that the results could be prepared by March 25 but when are we supposed
to check them?” questioned one of the teachers. Secondly, the
department has issued strict instructions that no teacher would be given
1/3rd leave in the afternoon as they are not allowed to miss these
classes. Teachers are against this as well. “Casual leave is my right.
My kids too have their exams and if I cannot take leave for their
preparation, what is the point in offering casual leaves. Casual leaves
are supposed to be taken casually but many headmasters deny that as
well,” added another teacher. Many school teachers are on exam duties in the board exams in other schools and that leaves their schools with lesser staff. What is worst is that Class X board exams are starting from March 16 and the students are still coming to schools for preparations. That leaves the teachers with no option because they have to take the exams of lower classes and also have to manage Class X. Where is the time for taking computer classes? they asked. District Education Officer (Secondary) Surinder Kaur Verma when contacted regarding this, said this was the decision of the higher authorities and she could not comment on that. As far as making arrangements for these computer classes was concerned, Patiala district has around 320 centres. |

IPL Punjab franchisee hopes to earn profits this time
Mohali, March 12 Without revealing the statistical figures, Colonel Arvinder Singh, senior vice president, cricket operations, Kings XI, said they would end earning profits this time. “You see the league has been growing rapidly, thus attracting a number of sponsors and advertisers. This time, hopefully we would finish with some profits”, said Singh while talking to TNS at PCA Stadium here today. However, he maintained that the franchisee bore losses in the first edition of the league, started two years ago while last year there was no profit, no loss situation. Further adding he said there was no dearth of cricket fans in the country but we were striving hard to win our own fans for the Kings XI. “More the fans, more the sponsors”, said Singh adding that the sponsors had increased in comparison to the previous year. Giving details about the strategies in this direction, Singh said their basic brand campaign is ‘home coming’. “For our fans, we have introduced an exciting and rewarding loyalty programme, with which we can create an ecosystem between the team, fans and advertising brands to engage with each other. Under the concept, the entire Kings XI online/mobile fan base is now being managed on Mloyal-the most comprehensive mobile loyalty platform. I want to prove myself in T20s: Kaif
Chandigarh, March 12 Q: Rajasthan Royals dropped you after the first match in IPL2. What actually transpired? A: Something went wrong last time, but it was the franchisee’s decision in the end to decide as to who they wanted to keep. I do not want to comment on it. That is past. These things happen and now I am looking forward to the new season. Q: What difference do you see between Kings XI Punjab and Rajasthan Royals? A: It is too early to say anything though it has been great mixing up with the guys. I am very excited to play along with Yuvraj and Irfan again and its going to be fun. The environment has been great at the team meetings. We have been sharing a lot with each other. Q: How do you see your role in Kings XI? A: I am thankful to the franchisee for giving me a chance. This is a great opportunity to prove myself in T20s and I am looking forward to play my part in the team’s success. Q: Are you happy with your form? A: Oh, I am very happy with my form at the moment. I scored a double century last week in the state match. I hope to carry on playing like this in the tournament. Q: Will change of captaincy affect the team? A: Deciding about the leader is purely a decision taken by the franchisee. At the end of the day, its all about performing as a team. Both are great players in their own right and their experience is bound to come in handy in the crunch situations. Q: You were a reliable middle-order batsman in tests as well as ODIs for India. How do you approach the shortest format? A: Oh, it is a great concept. You just have to adjust your mindset according to it and perform. I just want to put in my best according to the team’s needs and enjoy my time in the middle. Q: With a successful IPL, do you think you can push for a place in T20 World Cup? A: I just want to perform and make sure that our Kings XI wins. At the start of such a big tournament, I do not want to take that extra burden on me. It is not the end of the world. If I perform and the comeback happens I will give my best for the Indian team again. |
Cricketers lie about their fitness to play: Prof Dhillon
Chandigarh, March 12 This trend has got the doctors worried and they have proposed to the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) to computerise the health and medical records of all players registered with it and monitor the same from time to time. Talking to The Tribune, Dr Prof Mandeep S Dhillon, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, PGI, and consultant physician with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), said a recent study conducted by them had revealed that a considerable number of players lied about their physical fitness in order to play a match. He said they had examined 95 players registered with the PCA and discovered that 14 of them were having some sort of injury, which either they were not aware of or had not disclosed to their coach or the physicians. “In absence of any medical or fitness records, it’s impossible to know the nature and the severity of their injury and neglecting them can prove disastrous for their careers in the long run,” he said adding that for proper treatment these records were an absolute necessity. Dhillon said the study revealed 54 new injuries. Of these, he said 42 were significant and 12 were categorised as those where the players did not miss any match. He said of these 42 injuries, 13 were on the back, 10 on the upper limb and 45 per cent of all injuries were reported in the lower limb. The 95 players who were examined included 24 bowlers, 19 batsman, 8 wicket keepers and 44 all rounders. The study also revealed that one of the reasons for injuries was poor ground condition. He said such injuries, though on the face of it they appeared to be minor, but could be serious and result in grounding of the players for quite some time. The study also showed that bowlers were more prone to getting injured as compared to those batting or fielding. |

Pitch to be batting paradise: Curator
Chandigarh, March 12 “This is the same pitch we used in the T20 match against Sri Lanka in November last year. I expect it to be a fast, hard, bouncy wicket and the ball will certainly come to the bat very nicely. Batsman once in will be hard to contain,” he said while talking to The Tribune on the eve of the match. Sangakkara-led Kings XI Punjab locks horns with Delhi Daredevils in their first match of the IPL 3 at the PCA Stadium here tomorrow. “There will be bounce in the wicket but it would not seam much and that is ideal for a T20 clash. We have left the dry grass on the strip, which will help the batsman,” he added. Fans will be in for a run-feast with the likes of Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir and Kumar Sangakkara taking centrestage. “I don’t predict scores but bowlers could be in for a tough time once the batsman gets in. There is nothing for the spinners in it. Viewers can expect some high-hitting. The pitch will play the same for the entire duration and will give the team batting second an equal chance to score,” said Daljit. About the low temperature in the night helping the bowlers, he said, “The night temperature here is on the lower side compared to the rest of the country and it should somewhat help the bowlers.” |
