DRDA staff cancel dharna:
The All India DRDA Staff Welfare Association has cancelled its five-day mass dharna and relay fast to be held from March 16 to March 20 at Parliament Street at Delhi.

Mass leave:
On the call given by the Punjab State Deputy Commissioners Office Employees Union, 80 per cent staff of various branches of the Deputy Commissioner’s office took mass casual leave here today in protest against the raising of education qualification for clerks to graduate with compulsory course of computer but not increasing the salary accordingly. According to the spokesman for the employees, almost all employees went to Ludhiana to participate in the state-level protest rally. Due to shortage of staff, the official work of various branches was paralysed today.

Body found: An unidentified body of a man, aged about 30 years, was found hanging in a water tank of a workshop at Chagran village on the Hoshiarpur-Chandigarh road on Tuesday. According to DSP (R) Jasbir Singh, after taking the body in its custody, the police had sent it to the Civil Hospital for identification and post-mortem examination.

Wife held for helping man in rape:
The police arrested Sonia Verma, wife of Deepak Kumar, resident of Kapooran Mohalla, here under section 120-B of the IPC on the charge of helping her husband in raping a domestic help on May 1 last year. The police said the arrested woman was produced before the Judicial Magistrate who sent her in judicial custody for 14 days. Deepak was booked under section 376 of the IPC and arrested a few months back.

Beggar found dead:
An unidentified beggar in his fifties was found dead today near Nirman Cinema in Sector 32 here. The police ruled out any foul play behind the death, saying the body did not bear any visible injury marks. The police said some passers-by noticed the body lying at a bus queue shelter near the cinema and informed the police. The police believed that the man had died due to some prolonged ailment.

Trials for baseball team: Trials to select the men and women baseball team for the seventh North Zone Baseball Championship to be held at Rohtak and Haryana from March 12 will be organised by the Baseball Association Chandigarh on March 10. TR Kalia, general secretary, said trials would be held at the Punjab Engineering College grounds, Sector 12, tomorrow at 8 am.

Charas seized:
In a foray conducted near Nakrod police post in Churah sub-division of the district, the police intercepted Sanjay Kumar, a resident of Hisar (Haryana), and recovered charas weighing 1.1 kg from his possession. The police said the accused had been arrested and a case registered against him under Sections of the NDPS Act.

Labourer killed: A labourer was killed when his feet slipped from the trail and he fell into a gorge near Bharmour last evening, according to a report. The labourer was identified as Vipin Kumar, a resident of Jawalamukhi in Kangra district. The report said colleagues of the labourer rescued him and brought him to a local hospital where he died.

Job fair:
Stressing upon bankers to provide hassle-free loans to unemployed youths on priority, Mehraj Ahmad Kakroo, District Development Commissioner (DDC), Srinagar, said on Monday that it would help the youths to establish their own income generating units. He impressed upon the youths to avail the benefits of various schemes made available under the new employment policy. “The policy will be implemented from the next fiscal,” he said while inaugurating a five-day job fair at Kashmir Haat here.
