Four killed, three hurt in accidents
Sirhind/Rajpura, February 25 Pawan was driving a motorcycle and was hit
by a speeding truck near Rurki village on the Sirhind-Patiala road and he died on the spot. The truck driver, Gurnam Singh, a resident of Sekhonpura village in Patiala, has been arrested and a case in this connection has been registered against him. Another Gurpreet Singh of Abdullapur village got killed when the tractor he was driving lost balance after its tyre busted near Bassi Pathana. His friend Ajit Singh received serious injuries in the accident and was being treated. In another incident, Joga Singh, a resident of Dhanksu village, died near Rajpura railway station after being hit by a speeding train. Joga was trying to cross railway lines from platform number one when a speeding train from Sirhind hit him. In a similar accident an unidentified man fell from a speeding train near Rajpura railway station. The Railway Police was trying to identify the deceased who seems to be in his thirties. In yet another accident at Rajpura, Harvinder Singh, a resident of Chamaru village, got seriously injured when the bike he was riding collided with another Rajpura resident, Ashok Dahra. Ashok, too, got injured in the accident and was undergoing treatment at the Rajpura Civil Hospital. |

Rs 1.30 cr approved for Zirakpur MC building
Zirakpur/Dera Bassi, February 25 Sources in the MC confirmed
that the new building would be constructed opposite the Zirakpur police station in Lohgarh village. While the Zirakpur municipal council has passed the annual budget of Rs 23.60 crore, in a simultaneously meeting of the Dera Bassi municipal council, the members approved a budget of Rs 9.52 crore for the coming financial year. The meeting of Zirakpur municipal council was chaired by MC president Narinder Kumar Sharma and all elected councillors were present. During the meeting, Sharma said for the next financial year the MC had planned to spend 90 per cent income (approx Rs 21.24 crore) for the development works and Rs 7 crore would be spent for the improvement of roads. Rs 1.70 crore would be spent for upgradation of sewerage and water supply and Rs 1 crore would be spent on landscaping and parks. The council has also approved four tubewell connections for dealing with the shortage of water supply in Zirakpur. These tubewells would be set up by the MC. The council had passed Rs 1.90 crore for non-plan head and Rs 42 lakh for contingency for the coming financial year. In Dera Bassi, the MC meeting was headed by MC president Manjeet Kaur Dolly here today. High drama prevailed during the meeting, as eight councillors who are opposing the president took two hours for reading the budget and passed it after going through the details. The council had passed Rs 9.52 crore for the coming financial year. MC officials stated that from the passed budget, Rs 11.66 crore would be spent for development and rest of the money would be spent on council employees and other works. A sum of Rs 8.85 crore has been balanced at the account of MC from last budget. That was not used during the tenure. The MC official added that Rs 3 crore for the non-plan head, including salaries, and Rs 25 lakh for the contingency had been passed for the coming financial year. |

Clash between Nihangs, villagers
Anandpur Sahib, February 25 Police officials, led by DSP Sant Singh Dhaliwal, reached the spot and took representatives of both the factions to SDM APS Sandhu. Baba Balbir Singh told the police that a case had been pending in a court regarding possession of land of the dera. He claimed that the court had granted him stay in the case and the villagers from Ladhran had forcibly tried to take upon the area today. He later alleged that this was being done on behest of an influential SAD cabinet minister. “This minister has tried to take law in his hands by superseding the court orders of stay. We will file a case of contempt of court against him,” he said. Meanwhile, the administration had got the dera vacated so that Hola Mohalla celebrations could be held peacefully. |

New varsity to come up in Amritsar
Patiala, February 25 In his convocation address, he underlined the need to impart quality education to student to enable them to meet their professional requirements in today’s competitive world. He also lauded the achievements of the college’s faculty members. 14 students were honoured for attaining leading positions in the university merit list. College principal Sudeep Bhangoo welcomed the chief guest and presented the college annual report that highlighted the achievements of both the students and faculty during the 2008-09 session. She also urged the government to construct a new block on the campus for postgraduate and computer courses. When queried about problems pertaining to ETT (elementary teacher training) teachers, Sidhu said the government was considering their demands on a priority basis and
the issue would be resolved soon. He also announced a university with a 750 acre campus would be set up in Amritsar. “A central university, spread over 500 acres with an investment of Rs 150 crore, will soon come up in Bathinda. The government has also decided to set up about 15 new degree awarding colleges in
the state’s educationally backward districts,” Sidhu added. |

Residents upset over theft of sewer lids
Patiala, February 25 The menace has grown to the extent that thieves are not even scared to pick the lids from houses as well. Rajinder Kaur, a resident of New Mehar Singh Colony, is one such victim. Informing about the theft of the lid of the manhole situated inside her house, she said the incident happened around 8.30 pm. “We had invited a few guests and were sitting inside and talking when suddenly the bell rang. I went outside to open the gate and suddenly my foot got stuck in the open manhole. I later found that someone had picked the lid. What shocked me was the time when it happened. The thieves were so fearless that they stole the lid when we were all awake and the road was also busy,” she added. |

Art workshop
Patiala, February 25 The workshop which was inaugurated by Divisional Railway Manager Yatinder Pal Singh will be on different fields, including dance, music, painting and theatre for six days. The sources said this was the third workshop organised by the Department of Public Relation and Cultural Affairs. According to Suman, cultural officer, the students will learn various theatre excercises, voice excercises, diction and skits. |
Lawyers’ Chambers Complex
Chandigarh, February 25 He said, “Such chambers are beneficial for lawyers and its requirement cannot be emphasised as it is just like a car without engine. During 12 years of my service I have passed through similar experience. With this, the efficiency of lawyers will increase and justice will be delivered fast.” Mukesh Mittal, President, District Bar Association, told The Tribune that the five-storied building would be completed within a year. It would have 440 cabins, and three members would sit in a cabin. Members of the Bar Association thanked Mukesh Mittal for taking this initiative. Judges of the Punjab and Haryana High Court and the district courts along with the lawyers, Ram Niwas, Home Secretary, and Sanjay Kumar, Finance Secretary, were present on the occasion. |

Chandigarh, February 25 In the petition filed through the association’s general secretary Ashwani Munjal against the Union of India, the PGMIER and other respondents, it was added the committee, comprising the members of the institute’s body, was necessary for ensuring the redressal of grievances and the meeting of demands of the non-faculty staff. The demands and grievances were arising on continuous basis and their consideration was expected to go a long way in avoiding the unrest and disruption of the patients’ care, medical education and research work at the institute. Taking up the matter, Chief Justice Mukul Mudgal and Justice Jasbir Singh served notice of motion for May 20. |

Three held for liquor trafficking
Chandigarh, February 25 In another incident, Daljeet Singh, a resident of New Delhi, was arrested from the inner market of Sector 35 today. Twenty-five boxes of different brands of liquor was seized from his car (HR 05 P 4095). Ajay Kumar, a resident of Sector 56, was arrested from a road dividing sectors 55 and 56 on Wednesday. About 16 quarter of country wine was seized from his possession. Cases have been registered against them under the Excise Act.

Millennium School lift martial arts trophy
Mohali, February 25 Stretched over two days, the championship saw players from TMS bagging 10 gold, six silver and 16 bronze medals in the martial arts actions, kicks, forms, stretching and demo competition held at the school campus. St Anne’s Convent School was second as they secured nine gold, 10 silver and 11 bronze medals. Over 200 students from St Anne's Convent School, Baptist School, St Peter's Secondary School, The Millennium School, Shemrock Senior Secondary School, British School, Doon school and many other schools of Chandigarh and Mohali participated in this event. All gold medalists presented their self-defence techniques, dynamic stretching by Prerna. The senior team presented musical demo. Harjot Singh exhibited self-defence techniques and broke cemented tiles on stomach. The Millennium School director Robin Aggarwal presented awards to the winners. A skit was also presented on the occasion conveying message of change martial arts brings in one person’s life. |

Hockey photos to be showcased today
Chandigarh, February 25 The exhibition ‘A Salute to Indian Hockey’ is a unique photographic journey of the rich legacy of Hockey in India and will be displayed in public domain for the first time at Hotel Taj in Sector 17 here tomorrow at 12 noon. A special section dedicated to1948 Olympics will be unveiled by hockey legend triple Olympic gold medallist Balbir Singh Senior. The event will be graced by former legends of Indian hockey Balbir Singh, Gagan Ajit Singh, Harmik Singh, Jugraj Singh and Kanwal Preet Singh. The exhibition is divided into two sections: ‘Domination’ and ‘Innovation’, each representing an era in Indian hockey. ‘Domination’ showcases eight decades of unparalleled success and triumph enjoyed by Indian Hockey as they garnered six Olympic gold medals in a row. |
