Infighting takes it toll
First time in 46 yrs, winners not handed over trophy

A 46-year-old tradition went for a toss, when the winners of Bhagwant Memorial Hockey Trophy were not handed over the gold cup today, thanks to infighting and subsequent splitting up of the Grewal Sports Association.

‘Tatkal’ Ticket Bungling
2 rly booking clerks, in charge suspended

Ludhiana, February 21
In a raid conducted by officials from divisional headquarters of the Northern Railway at the reservation complex here on Saturday, two reservations clerks and in charge of the reservation centre were placed under suspension for gross financial irregularities and alleged manipulations in the booking of “tatkal” tickets for the day.

Act of Sacrilege
Christians stage protest, demand action
Ludhiana, February 21
Up in arms over the act of sacrilege and torching of a church in Batala by miscreants on Saturday, a large numbers of Christians staged an angry protest at the Jagraon bridge here today. They demanded immediate action against the miscreant and steps to inculcate a sense of security among the minorities.

Migrant beaten to death
Ludhiana, February 21
A 20-year-old migrant succumbed to his injuries after he was brutally beaten up by his neighbour, who did not like the youth’s advances towards his wife. Anil Kumar, a resident of Kishore Nagar in division No. 7, breathed his last at a private hospital in the wee hours today.

Scuffle turns ugly
Man fires at younger brother

A scuffle over the financial matters turned ugly when an enraged brother allegedly shot his younger brother in the neck in the Dugri Phase- I area here today. The victim has been identified as Ravinder Singh (32), who sustained a bullet injury, which was being fired from an air rifle amidst the scuffle.

Municipal Corporation XEN (O&M cell) Manjit Singh was hit on rear by an auto here on Saturday night while he was inspecting work of sewer near the Jalandhar bypass. He was rushed to the DMC Hospital in critical condition. He would be operated upon twice tomorrow.

Youth killed in accident

A youth of Agwar Ladhai was killed yesterday when his motorcycle was hit by a tractor-trolley at Kothe Pona village, near here. Bhola Singh, father of the victim, said his 30-year-old son Sonu, alias Waheguru, was going on his motorcycle (PB10CB-7319) last evening when he was hit by a tractor-trolley.

The member of parliament and national spokesperson of the All-India Congress Committee, Manish Tewari, today laid stress on the need for promoting kabaddi in the state.
