Rainwater harvesting plants for schools
Fatehgarh Sahib, February 20 This was stated here today by ADC (development) Pradeep Singh Kaleke during a meeting of water supply and sanitation committee at district administration. He said the Punjab government had passed the project with the help of World Bank in view of the problem of increasing pollution in water and various diseases due to dirty water. He said village panchayat water supply sanitation committees would be set up with the help of water supply and sanitation department and NGOs wherein persons from village would supervise developmental works. For sewerage system, those villages would be given preference, where 70 per cent houses will agree for septic tanks of their own. Besides, panchayat would be allotted free land for water works, sewerage treatment plant and other works under the scheme, he said. |

Solar car demonstration
Banur, February 20 The solar car demonstration was organised to provide creative atmosphere for college students. The car is designed by professors of Glyndwr University, Tom Boddington and Natasha Samatha. It is manufactured with off-the-shelf components and it is 7 feet 3 inch long and 3 feet wide having three tyres and one seat. It can reach to the maximum speed of 57mph. Prof IK Kataria, managing director of Gurukul Vidyapeeth said: "Solar car demonstration was a great footing for the young aspirants. Students were informed that in the present scenario of soaring petrol prices solar car is the best alternative.” |

Development Work
Fatehgarh Sahib, February 20 The residents raised slogans against the MC officials and demanded removal of unauthorised meat shops in their ward where the historical gurudwara is situated. The area residents alleged that despite repeated requests and written complaints, no action had been taken by the officials concerned. The residents said roads leading to historical gurudwara were in a shamble and drainage system also does not function properly. The residents said they would launch an agitation soon if their demands were not met. They submitted a memorandum to the executive officer. |

Youth found dead
Lalru, February 20 According to the Railway Police, they got information around 12.35 pm that a body of a man was lying at railway track. The police said he was wearing a white shirt and a white lining trouser. The body of the deceased had been kept for identification at the Civil Hospital, Dera Bassi, for 72 hours. |

Two held for fraud
Zirakpur, February 20 The case was registered against Nirmal Singh, president of the Motor Mechanic Association and secretary Manmohan Singh on the complaint of GMADA. According to the police, the Motor Mechanic Association, Mani Majra, had bought 14 acre in Bishanpura near the old police station for setting up workshop and shops. After some time, the association had divided in two groups. They were found carving out illegal colony and selling plots without the change of land use, the police said. As per GMADA rules, anyone who is selling more than 1,000 square meters of land should seek permission. The accused had illegally sold plots and had not informed the department or sought any permission. The police official stated that they have been booked under Section 36- 1 of the Punjab Apartment and Property Regulation Act. Theft
Thieves decamped with taps, along with other sanitary items, worth thousands of rupees from an under construction house of Punjab and Haryana High Court Judge at Swastik Vihar on Zirakpur-Patiala road on Friday late night. According to the police, the complainant Gurnam Singh, son of Hari Singh alleged that some unidentified miscreants had entered the house last night and fled with taps and other sanitary items. The miscreants had managed to flee in darkness, the police added. The police said a case had been registered against unidentified persons on the complaint of Gurnam Singh and started further investigation. |

One detained for murder
Panchkula, February 20 A Maruti car used in the crime has also been recovered. The other accomplice of accused identified as Amit is stated be at large. It was on Monday, when the police found a body on Saketri road near Mansa Devi Complex. The genital parts of the deceased were badly crushed and marks of tyres of a four-wheeler indicated that the deceased was killed at some other place before the body was disposed. According to the police, it was found that the deceased was a resident of Darua village on the border of Chandigarh. The deceased, a native of Rai Bareily, had been living in a small apartment. The name of the deceased is, however, yet to be confirmed. Though the police is yet to complete the investigation, the sources said the murder was an outcome of a dispute over possession of the house where Maan Singh used to stay. It was on February 14 night when the accused took him in the car and killed him with wooden planks. Later, they dumped the body in a pit on Saketri road. |

Indian hockey team pull out of exhibition match
Chandigarh, February 20 Organisers of the event had to make do with the local hockey team led by Jugraj Singh, Gaganajit Singh and Kamalpreet. Fans, who had come from far-flung places like Jalandhar, Amritsar, Shimla, Ambala and Delhi had to return. However, Bollywood star Sunil Shetty and television actors Irfan Khan and Aamir Ali, Punjabi singer Babbu Mann and comedian Bhagwant Mann brought cheer to spectators. Samarveer Singh of Jalandhar said he had come all the way from Jalandhar to see the national stars in action ahead of the World Cup to be held in New Delhi from February 28. He said the Sports Ministry should immediately sack the hockey players, who tried to defame the national game. Anjali from Delhi said hockey was her favourite game and she was shocked to know that India players refused to participate in the mega event just for the sake of money. She said stern action should be taken against the players for blackmailing the organisers who had put in lot of efforts to organise the major show. Sunil Shetty urged spectators to cheer the Indian hockey team during the Delhi Olympics. The players will have a face off with Pakistan on February 28. Even though the Chandigarh administration had made elaborate security arrangements for the smooth conduct of the mega event, it failed to make special parking arrangements. The organisers also failed to make arrangements for potable water and spectators could be seen visiting the nearby market to fetch mineral bottles. |

Avatar Singh wins silver in shot put
Patiala, February 20 Avtar Singh threw the shot put to a distance of 9.98m in the 60 plus age group to bag the silver medal. Avtar Singh said: “My family and friends had pinned high hopes on me and I am glad that I could live up to their expectations. After retirement, I was aiming to make a mark in the international level, which I could not do earlier due to my job. I am glad that my hardwork paid off”. Avtar Singh, who has been training on his own for this competition since long, tasted success at a very young age when he won various medals in hockey during school nationals. “Sports has been my passion since childhood but I could not take it up as a career due to parental pressure. Those were the times when everybody wanted secure jobs, but I continued playing while I was doing electrical engineering,” he said. Avtar Singh has also won medals in athletics and hockey at the college and university level. His message for future generations is that sports is the heart of life. |

Mohali, February 20 Stating this in a press note yesterday, MDLTA president Tilak R Sarangal said competitions would be held in three categories in both singles and doubles. He said players from Punjab and Chandigarh, who have attained the age of 35+, 45+ and 55+, as on January 1, 2010, are eligible to participate in the event. He said a large number of entries from all over Punjab and Chandigarh were expected. Sarangal said the interested players should contact MDLTA general secretary Harjit Singh on his mobile No 98765-31000 for registration and added that the last date for submitting the entries was February 25 by 5 pm. |
