Abohar
Free medical camp held
: About 200 physically impaired persons were escorted by their parents to the free medical camp that was organised by the Seth Shankar Dass Daulat Ram Nagpal Charitable Trust here at Jaycee Palace on Saturday. A team of experts led by Captain (retd) Dr RL Handa examined the affected persons, took measurements to prepare artificial limbs that would be fixed during the next camp on April 4 free of cost. The camp convener, JC Nagpal, informed that free medical check-up camp will also be organised here on Sunday as well.

Shyam Mahotsav: Business activities in the old walled city area came to a halt for half of the day as several persons joined the Dhwaja Shobha Yatra on the eve of Shri Shyam Mahotsav being organised by Shree Sanvaria Mittar Mandal to celebrate the foundation day of Shyam Bihari Mandir here on Saturday. A large number of devotees had converged from a dozen villages of Abohar and Fazilka sub-divisions.

Dev Arjun wins cycle race: Dev Arjun who displayed “Chak de India” motto topped in the cycling race during the thrilling Annual Sports Meet of the pre-primary section at the LRS DAV Senior Secondary Model School here Friday. The winners were honoured by the civil judges Ashok Kapur and Girish.

Toppers honoured: Toppers in house tests including Chandani, Sonia, Palak, Varsha, Jatinder Kaur and Mukesh were honoured during a seminar on “data structures” that was organised by the Swami Keshwa Nand Memorial College here yesterday. Lalit Goyal, senior lecturer from DAV College, Chandigarh was the chief guest. The college principal Saroj Nagpal honoured Ankita, Kiran, Sonia, Sumit, Prem Lata, Sandeep, Ashu, Piyush, Swaran Jit, Gaurav, Raman Brar, Aman Sharma and Neha who had won laurels during the youth festival held last year.

Missing boy found
:The police has managed to trace a class IX boy, who was missing since February 13.The police traced the boy with the help of phone calls that he made to his parents. Shashtri Guru Dutt Sharma, a resident of Ward No. 3, Amloh, had filed a missing report of his son Pryya Dutt Sharma, alias Kakoo.After working on various theories, the police succeeded in tracing the boy last night from Langer Kot village under the Kahnoowan police station (Gurdaspur). The boy was handed over to his parents today.

‘Udd de Panchi’ released
:Cluster center Katar Singh Wala of the Parho Punjab campaign released “Udd de Panchi”, a magazine for primary students in which they mentioned their own poems and stories.Claiming it to be first of its kind in Bathinda district, the cluster master trainer Rupinder Kaur Sidhu said the focus of the magazine was to enhance the thinking power of the students. 

Blood donation camp held: Celebrating the birthday of founder president late Dr Valaiti Ram Bansal, the staff and students of the SSD Girls’ College and the SSD Women Institute of Technology, led by Dr Anil Bansal, organised a blood donation camp on Saturday where 30 volunteers donated blood.

Family planning camp held
: In a campaign launched by the health department, a four-day special family planning camp was organised by the local civil hospital authorities on the directions of civil surgeon, Ferozepur, Dr Dalip Kumar, which concluded here on Saturday. In this camp, vasectomy and tubectomy operations were conducted by the team of surgeons. Senior Medical Officer (SMO), civil hospital, Fazilka, Dr YK Gupta said that team of surgeons led by Dr Rajesh Sharma and Dr Kavita Singh conducted 80 tubectomy operations of women and eight non-scalpel vasectomy (NSV) operations of men were performed. Dr Gupta said that the health department has given incentive of Rs 1,100 to everyone who was operated upon in the camp.

2 killed in  mishaps
:Two people were killed in separate accidents in Khanna.Amritpal Singh, a resident of Bhattian village, died on the spot after the scooter he was riding was hit by a speeding truck on the Samrala road yesterday evening. The truck driver fled from the spot.In another accident, an unidentified man was killed after being hit by a speeding SUV near Mandiala Kalan village. The police has kept the body in the civil hospital for identification.

Skill development centres
: CM Parkash Singh Badal on Saturday announced that state-of-the-art skill development centres would soon come up at block level to train the unemployed youth. Badal said the government would provide employment opportunities to the rural youth by establishing such centres that would not only help them to earn their livelihood, but also change the economic scenario of the state.

New Bar room at Mansa
: Justice Lakshmi Narain Mittal of the Punjab and Haryana HC and also the Administrative Judge of Session Division, Mansa, inaugurated the new building of Bar room here on Saturday. He called upon the lawyers and the judges to work harmoniously to reduce the workload. He said a new building of court complex at Sardulgarh would be constructed soon.

3 village chowkidars attacked, hurt
:Some assailants attacked and seriously wounded three chowkidars at Bhakhriana village late last night.The assailants attacked the chowkidars with sharp-edged weapons and managed to escape. The chowkidars, Gurbchan Singh, Mahinder Paul and Vijay Kumar, were admitted to the Civil Hospital.A case has been registered.

: An environment awareness programme under the National Environment Awareness Campaign in collaboration with the State Council of Science and Technology, Chandigarh, was organised by the Bhai Gurdas Institute of Engineering and Technology, Sangrur. The students planted trees saplings. A poster-making competition on environment was also organised by the institute.

Mobile shop burgled
:Thieves broke into a mobile phone shop, Om Communication, in the Raja ka Talab area last night and decamped mobile phones and recharge coupons. Initially, the police had reported a loss of Rs 96,000 after lodging an FIR under Sections 380 and 456 of the IPC. According to shop owner, Harminder Singh, the total amount of robbery can be over Rs 2 lakh.

Two die in accident
:Two motorcycle riders died on spot when the two-wheeler struck against the stationary truck parked at Khudla village in Sarkaghat subdivision of Mandi district yesterday. As per information received from the police the motorcycle struck against the truck around 11 pm yesterday, which was parked out side the house of Sunil Kumar. Both deceased were identified as Dinesh Kumar from village Khudla and the other was Hardev from Kanda village in Mandi district. A case under Sections 279, 304-A of the IPC has been registered at Sarkaghat police station.

India as herbal country
: Former minister and president of the Aromatic and Medicinal Plant Growers’ Association of India Randhir Singh on Saturday demanded that India be declared as herbal country. Given the fact, that the country is home for rare aromatic and medicinal plants, Randhir Singh said India’s diversity was unmatchable as it had 16 different climates zones, 10 vegetative zones and 15 biotic provinces. 

Boy commits suicide: A teenage boy reportedly committed suicide over a minor dispute with his father on Saturday, police sources said. The police said the body of Ganesh Mahajan was found hanging with a ceiling fan in his house at the Canal road, while no suicide note was recovered from the spot. The body has been shifted to the GMCH for postmortem.

1 hurt in accident
: Bashir Ahmed Ganie was seriously injured when an unknown vehicle hit his motorcycle on the National Highway at Palhalan Pattan in Baramulla district. Ganie, a resident of Chawdhama Pattan, was later shifted to the hospital.

Educational tour: The ‘K Force’ of the Army today flagged off an educational-cum-motivational tour for 18 students of the Kashmir valley belonging to the age group of 13 to 15. The students would visit naval and coast guard ships and interact with the Governor of Tamil Nadu. In Bangalore, the children would visit Hindustan Aeronautic Limited and information technology companies. In Delhi, they would visit Parliament House, India Gate and Rashtrapati Bhavan.
