NZ to introduce safety measures in taxis
Melbourne, February 1 Another cabbie Bipin Tavadia said the victim was a gentle man, who was working extra shifts to support his mother, wife and two daughters, aged five and three. “Those people... they have money to drink, they have money to spend, but they don't have money for taxi fare,” he said. Taxi companies in the country are now asking the government to pay for screens and cameras in cabs. Knife used to attack Indian cabbie found
The knife used to fatally stab an Indian-origin taxi driver in New Zealand's Auckland city has been retrieved from the scene of the assault described by the police as a frenzied attack. Hiren Mohini, 39, was found dead with multiple stab wounds in his crashed car early yesterday and the police said they believed he was attacked by a passenger. The police said they had found a knife that might have been used in the killing of Mohini, New Zealand Herald reported. Mohini's cab had crashed into a tree on View Road at about 1.20 am (local time) after he was allegedly stabbed by a passenger. Detective Senior Sergeant Hywel Jones said the knife had been sent for forensic examination and 30 investigators are hunting for the killer. The police is also looking at CCTV footage near where the passenger was picked up in the city and carrying out door to door inquiries in Mt Eden where the car crashed. "It was a frenzied attack... There are a large number of witnesses to interview not only from the street where the murder happened but also other locations such as the CBD where a male suspect is believed to have hired the cab driven by the deceased," Jones said. He said security surveillance footage was being assessed from a number of locations in what is a "complex murder investigation". The police is looking for a man in his 20s, who was seen fleeing the scene. —

41 killed in Baghdad suicide attack
Baghdad, February 1 The bombing was the first major strike this year against pilgrims making their way to the southern city of Karbala to mark a Shiite holy day. It raised fears of an escalation of attacks when the pilgrimage culminates on Friday. The bomber hid the explosives underneath an abaya - a black cloak worn from head to toe by women - as she joined a group of pilgrims on the outskirts of the Shiite-dominated neighbourhood of Shaab, said Major-Gen Qassim al-Moussawi, Baghdad’s top military spokesman. A police official said 41, including a number of women and children, were killed and 106 were wounded. Hospital officials in Baghdad confirmed the casualties. All the officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorised to talk to the media. Al-Moussawi put the toll at 19 killed and 80 wounded. Conflicting casualty counts are common in Iraq in the aftermath of an attack. Witnesses described a chaotic scene in the minutes following the blast. Raheem Kadhom, 35, was standing about 138 meters away when he says a huge fireball erupted among the pilgrims. Pilgrims were “on the ground, covered in blood and crying for help,” he said. — AP |
Sharif won’t contest bypoll
Pakistan’s main opposition leader and former premier Nawaz Sharif has withdrawn her candidature from the election to the National Assembly seat in hometown Lahore due on March 10.“The party has decided that Sharif should not contest byelection,” provincial president of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), Zulfiqar Khosa, told newsmen after a meeting of party leadership in Lahore. Under a revised schedule announced by the Election Commission on a directive by the Supreme Court, nomination papers for the election were due to be filed from Monday. The party is considering two or three names for selection of its new candidate. Nawaz had filed nomination papers for in November 2007 for traditional constituency NA 123 after returning from exile in Jeddah (Saudi Arabia). The acceptance of his papers by the Election Commission was challenged in the Lahore High Court and election on the seat was deferred in February 2008 when general elections were held in the country. After protracted litigation, Sharif’s disqualification by the Lahore High Court was overturned by the Supreme Court. Last year the Punjab government secured another postponement on pretext of serious law and order situation and threat of terrorist attacks. However, early last month the Supreme Court dismissed provincial government’s plea for continued deferment due to security condition prevailing in the country. Speculations have been rife that Sharif is reconsidering the pros and cons of participation in the elections against the backdrop of widely held belief that the country may have mid-term polls. Another view was that Sharif is obligated by the deal with Musharraf underwritten by Saudi Arabia that he would not take part in domestic politics for 10 years which expire later this year. Khosa dismissed these speculations. He said the party leadership has come to a conclusion that Nawaz Sharif’s status as national leader transcends the membership of any assembly. As such it advised Sharif not to contest elections under prevailing political situation. |
Zardari safe, secure in his chair: Aitzaz
President Asif Zardari cannot be removed from office even if the courts rule that he was not qualified to contest presidential election in September 2008, eminent jurist and leader of Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Chaudhry Aitzaz Ahsan said here on Monday. “The only way to dislodge President Zardari is impeachment under Article 247 of the Constitution in the joint session of the Parliament,” Aitzaz said while talking to reporters outside the Supreme Court building here. Aitzaz reiterated his expert opinion that Zardari enjoys immunity from being prosecuted in a court of law on criminal charges. This immunity does not apply to civil cases, he added. Commenting on reports that the Supreme Court had ruled against immunity to former president Pervez Musharraf in its detailed judgment on the petition annulling dismissal of Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry on March 9, 2007 by the Supreme Court bench presided over by Justice Khalilur Rehman Ramday, Aitzaz said the court ruling pertains to immunity claimed by Musharraf on civil suits as well. President Zardari has been fighting speculations about the stability of his office in the wake of court ruling annulling the National Reconciliation Ordinance that pardoned corruption against him. A heated debate is continuing in the media and political circles that he would be ousted through ‘judicial process’. His critics maintain that he should step down on ethical grounds even if he enjoys immunity. Meanwhile, information minister Qamruzzaman Kaira has said President Zardari was likely to shed his extra-ordinary powers he enjoys under the 17th Amendment introduced during Musharraf era. Kaira said the parliamentary committee for the repeal of the 17th Amendment has finalised its task and President Asif Ali Zardari is to announce its repeal on March 23, the Pakistan Day. |
