Kabaddi meet concludes
Kalka, January 15 Around 20 teams from Bhiwani, Hisar, Sonepat, Panipat, Kaithal, Chandigarh, Jind, Barwala, Rohtak and Panchkula participated in the event. Yogesh Kumar, SDM, Kalka, was the chief guest on the inauguration ceremony. Out of the 20 teams, eight teams made it to the quarterfinals. The final was played between Pai (Kaithal) and SAI (Sonepat), in which SAI (Sonepat) registered victory 34-28. The winning team got a cash prize of Rs 10,000, the team claiming the second position got Rs 7,000, while the team bagging the third position got a cash prize of Rs 2,500. The prizes were sponsored by the department of higher education, Haryana. OP Singh, IPS, and director sports, Haryana, who was chief guest on the concluding ceremony, congratulated the winning teams. |

Man commits suicide
Ropar, January 15 In one of the suicide notes, Surinder held his brother Rajpal Vinayak, partners Kewal Krishan and Mukesh Kumar and market committee employee Baldev Singh Gill responsible for his plight. His son Gagan Vinayak told the police that his father had been under stress owing to losses in business. He alleged that the people named in his father’s suicide note were responsible for his plight. |

Woman accused of murdering husband surrenders
Kharar, January 15 Kamaljit was with her three-month-old son, second husband Upkar Singh and mother-in-law. Kamaljit had plotted the murder of her first husband Gurcharan Singh, a resident of Sector 30 B, Chandigarh, whose charred body was found near Swara village in Kharar on October 3, 2008. GRP SHO Krishan Kumar said the accused had an illicit relationship with her uncle Sukhwinder, a resident of Ambala. Sukhwinder set Gurcharan ablaze and torched his motorcycle near Swara The police traced the call details of Gurcharan’s mobile phone and nabbed Sukhwinder in April, 2009. He is presently lodged at Ropar Jail. Kalamjit, who had been on-the-run since then, got married to Upkar Singh, a resident of Rajpura. Kalamjit gave birth to a son on November 26, 2009. Upkar Singh then filed an application and medical certificate in the Kharar court, in which he stated that his wife Kamaljit had just delivered a baby and she was unable to appear before the court. The police revealed that in the meantime, Upkar moved many applications seeking a re-inquiry into the case, but his pleas were rejected by the court. Kamaljit handed over her son to her mother-in-law in the court and surrendered. She has been sent to a 14-day judicial remand and is now lodged at Patiala Central Jail. |

Army Day celebrated
Fatehgarh Sahib, January 15 CGI was decked with metallic beauties showcased with pride by the Indian Army and civilians on the latest warfare available with the Army. The civilians had a busy time going through the latest tanks, artillery guns, missiles, infantry weapons and other engineering and communication equipment in use. The chief guest, media adviser to the Punjab Chief Minister Harcharan Singh Bains said such exhibitions were needed to bridge a gap between Army personnel and civilians. Lt Col BS Sandhu, chairman and managing director, WWICS Group of Companies, welcomed the guests. The gallantry award winners, including retired veterans of the region, were also present. Fifty war widows of the district were also honoured. A cultural show was also presented. |

Chandigarh, January 15 In his petition placed before Chief Justice Mukul Mudgal and Justice Jasbir Singh, Gorsi asserted that presently 80 private security agencies were operating in the city. Out of the total, only two have been granted license so far. The deputy commissioner had been designated as controlling authority for issuance of licenses, which were mandatory under the provisions of Private Security Agencies (Regulations) Act, 2005. The petitioner said the agencies had mushroomed during the recent years due to increase in the number of business establishments and government organisations and rise in the anti-social activities in the city. |

Man held for raping minor
Chandigarh, January 15 According to Sector 34 police station SHO Udheypal, the matter came to light around 11.30 pm when the victim’s mother found her bleeding on the terrace of her house. The accused has been identified as Shambhu of Burail village and he hails from West Bengal. He was not living with his wife for the past over five years. The police said the accused had come to the residence of his friends for a party. They were having drinks. He spotted the minor daughter of his friend’s neighbour and took her to the terrace and raped her. He fled the spot leaving the victim behind. When the victim’s mother could not find her daughter she raised an alarm and people searched for the little girl. They later found her on the terrace. The victim was rushed to Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 35, and was later discharged from there. The police also got the accused medically examined and took his blood stained clothes in its possession. A police officer said as such a heinous act indicate that the accused could be a psycho they would look into other such incidents occurred in the area tio find out whether he was involve din them also. Recently a minor girl was raped by an unidentified man in sector 35. the accused was produced before a local court which remanded him to police custody for one day. |

Shikha grabs gold in javelin throw
Chandigarh, January 15 In the girls’ U-17 high jump event, the first position was attained by Neha of GMSSS-26 by covering 1.15m, whereas, Gaytri of GMHS-26 and Sushmita of Saupins-32 got second and third
positions respectively. DAV-8 bagged three gold medals in the boys’ section. The first medal was won by Vickey in the U-17 triple jump While, the second gold was won by Arjun, who won the U-19 javelin. Arjun completed a golden double as he won the triple jump with a leap of 11.79 m. CFA to conduct U-21 team trials on Jan 17
Chandigarh January 15 The U-21 team will be selected from among the 25 probables for the National Football Championship for Dutta Roy Trophy, which will be held at Gurg from February 13, Rakesh Bakshi, CFA secretary, said. All players were born on or after January 1, 1990 are eligible and those who have played U-21 nationals or senior nationals are not allowed to appear for trials. |
Dalbir wins women’s golf title
Chandigarh, January 15 Three women tied for the second spot returning identical nett 75 cards. But Babbles Singh, who had the best back nine of the trio, was declared the first runner-up. The other two who tied for the second spot were Binny Bath and Pauline JM Singh. Fifteen women took part in the January medal round competition. |
City lad to get training at pace academy
Chandigarh, January 15 Sahib would leave for Chennai tomorrow. The pace academy is famous for producing the best fast bowlers for Indian team. Being an all-rounder, he has taken 22 wickets and scored 185 runs in four matches in the under-19 tournament last year. While playing for Himachal Pradesh against Delhi, he got six wickets each in both innings and also scored 80 runs in the first inning. In another match against Jharkhand, he repeated his six-wicket haul. He has been representing the Zonal Cricket Association (ZCA) from the past three years. He also represented north zone, the national champion of the last season under-19, who won both one days and test matches. |
