Debate on traffic awareness today
Fatehgarh Sahib, January 6 “Eyesight of as many as 200 truck drivers has been examined on the first day of awareness campaign besides giving lectures and advertisement material for the truck, bus, auto-rickshaw and taxi drivers,” said district transport officer Amarjeet Singh
Shahi. The district transport officials said they had been trying to make people aware of the dangers of driving vehicles at high speed. A seminar, debate, quiz competition and a painting competition would be held during the traffic awareness camp which would conclude here tomorrow. Admitting that the number of accidents were on a rise, the officials of the district transport office and traffic police officials said the GT Road, Sirhind Flyover, link roads in villages and the Chunni-Landran road were the worst affected as many accidents had been reported on these stretches during the past year. They added that the use of SUVs had increased the number of major fatal accidents in the district. Usually five to nine persons could sit in an
SUV, which is driven at a breakneck speed on the highways that often collides into vehicles moving ahead or rams into stationed trucks. There have been instances wherein five, seven and 10 persons have lost their lives in such accidents at
Sirhind, Mandi Gobindgarh and Khamano areas. The most tragic accident took place in Mandi Gobindgarh wherein an influential family from Jammu, comprising two brothers, their mother and an NRI sister, was on its way to immerse ashes of a family member at Haridwar in a
Santro. Their car rammed into a stationed truck at Mandi Gobindgarh and all of them died in the accident. In another accident six youths were killed when their Scorpio rammed into a stationed truck near
Khamano. |
