Patiala railway station gets facelift
Patiala, January 3 The new reservation office, inaugurated by Union Minister of State for External Affairs Preneet Kaur here yesterday, has provision for six counters and has a touch screen enquiry system. It has other public amenities, including an ATM. The heritage character of the old building has not been altered and the new reservation office looks a part of the old railway station. Besides the new reservation office, the railways have made provision for a big parking lot. A new parking has been readied, which has enough accommodation for 500 scooters and cycles, 50 cars and 44 auto-rickshaws. This is hoped to ease traffic congestion at the main compound outside the railway station
building, which otherwise used to get crowded every time a train arrived. Divisional Railway Manger HK Jaggi said the signal system up to Bathinda would be upgraded soon. The new alarm signal system, which is to be commissioned shortly, would give an alarm to the driver to alert him about a signal in fog at least 600 metres before the signal. Railways had plans of development at this station such as landscaping and development of green patches in circulating area, provision of couch guidance system, electronic train indicator boards etc, he added. Concern over sale of gurdwaras’ land
Preneet Kaur said the Union Government had conveyed its concern to Pakistan on the sale of pieces of land attached to gurdwaras and urged Islamabad to look into the matter and take appropriate remedial action. In an informal chat with mediapersons on the sidelines of the inaugural function, she said the matter related to incidents of sale of some of the land attached to gurdwaras in Pakistan had caused concern among Sikhs. She said the Indian government had conveyed the concerns in this regard to the Pakistani government and requested the latter to look into the matter. Notably, the Pakistan Evacuee Trust Property Board (PETPB) had reportedly sold around 855 kanal worth hundreds of crores of rupees on a nominal price. This includes nearly 811 kanal in Lahore. The sale violates the Nehru-Liaqat pact signed by the two Prime Ministers in 1950 in New Delhi. The PETPB had reportedly sold 855 kanal belonging to Gurdwara Deh and Samadh Bhai Mann Singh in Lahore to the Defence Housing Authority of Pakistan, 25 acres belonging to Gurdwara Bebe Nanaki Ji at Dera Chehal village and 307 kanal at Hadbast Mauja Mota Singh Wala district in Pakistan. The matter of these lands was raised in parliament a few days ago and External Affairs Minister SM Krishna had promised to take up the issue with Pakistan, she added. |
