His vote hangs in balance

Congress councillor Devinder Singh Babla is planning to file a request in the District Courts on December 31 for permission to allow him to cast his vote in the coming mayoral election scheduled for January 1, 2010, but his councillorship of the Municipal Corporation is still uncertain, as his exemption request has not been approved by the house so far.

Family members and friends of Aradhana take out a march in memory of Ruchika in Panchkula on Tuesday. While former DGP SPS Rathore was booked under different Sections of the CrPC by the Panchkula police today on the 16th death anniversary of Ruchika, the family of Anand Prakash and residents of Panchkula held a peace march up to the old residence of Girhotras, where Ruchika committed suicide on December 29, 1993.

Retirement age of Profs likely to be raised
Chandigarh, December 29
In line with other union territories the retirement age for Panjab University’s professors might be raised to 65 soon. As per official sources, the Vice-Chancellor made the declaration today in front of the UGC Committee.

Allegations mark MC meeting at Mohali

Heated arguments over various issues and trading of allegations marked the meeting of the Municipal Council here today even as a controversy arose over the clearing of estimates for development works worth over Rs 5 crore with opposition councillors adopting a pick and choose policy and the ruling group opposing such a move, which adversely affected the development of the town.

Amendment in IPC provisions sought

City-based advocate and convener of the RTI Users Association HC Arora has, in a memorandum to the Union Home Minister P Chaidambram, called for an amendment in the provisions of the Indian Penal Code that deal with crime against women.

2 more fall prey to H1N1 virus
Chandigarh, December 29
Two more person succumbed to swine flu in the city today, raising the death toll so far to 50. The number of H1N1 patients has also risen to 320, with new cases being reported during the day. Of these, two were from Haryana and one from Punjab.

The Patiala police today claimed to have arrested a woman, Supriya, and her paramour Charinder on charges of “murdering” Pawan Kumar Chibby, who was Supriya’s husband.

Building activity likely to pick up

Recent recoveries of stolen vehicles and success in tracking down tricksters behind theft of cash, vehicles apart, car thieves and burglars continue to remain a step ahead of the Mohali police.

Woman duped of Rs 60 lakh
Chandigarh, December 29
Three Mohali residents allegedly duped a woman of over Rs 60 lakh, which they had borrowed. The police said Hardial Kaur of Sector 33 lodged a complaint alleging that Amar Nath, Ashok Kumar and Rajesh Kumar, all residents of Mohali, had borrowed Rs 62 lakh from her husband on April 25, 1999 for purchasing a house in Sector 19.

Two arrested in theft case

The police today arrested two youngsters on charges of committing a theft at a resident of their common friend in Sector 20 here this afternoon. One of the accused told the police that he needed money for his mother’s operation.

2 killed in mishaps
Mohali, December 29
Two labourers died after accidental fall in two separate incidents in the district. An 18-year-old labourer, Kundan, a resident of Indira Colony, Sector 17, Panchkula, while working as a daily wage earner at Maya Gardens project, Zirakpur, slipped from the stairs of the fourth floor.
