NSS camp concludes

Patiala, December 26
A seven-day NSS camp concluded at Government Bikram College of Commerce in Patiala. Corporation Commissioner MS Narang was the chief guest.

He lauded the efforts of the NSS volunteers and college principal Satinder Kaur for their contribution in making Patiala a clean city. He also praised the sketches of college students on female foeticide.

Narang stressed on the need of being self-dependent and work towards the betterment of society. He described NSS as a platform that channelised the energy of the students for constructive purposes. He said NSS was an institution, which inspired the students towards the dignity of labour. He further encouraged the students to keep up the good work with a positive look towards life.

Dr Paramvir Singh, chief coordinator of NSS wing of Punjabi University, Patiala, inspectedthe camp.

Prof PS Reiki thanked the principal for her contribution towards the drive and also congratulated her for starting BCA course.

A series of extension lectures were also presented. Dr RS Atwal apprised the audiences of the symptoms of swine flu.

Pvt Colleges
Non-teaching staff want revised pay scales

In the wake of demonstrations by non-teaching staff of private-aided colleges, Shamsher Singh, president of Khalsa College Non-Teaching Union, urged the Punjab government to implement the 5th Pay Commission recommendations for non-teaching employees of private colleges.

He said education minister Upinderjeet Kaur had assured them of fulfilling their demands at the earliest.

He said while the teaching and non-teaching employees of all government colleges of Punjab and teaching staff of private colleges had started getting revised pay-scales, the same should be applicable for non-teaching staff of private colleges.

Imposter arrested

Ambala, December 26
The Army police has nabbed a resident of Rewari at Ambala cantonment late last evening who was posing as an Army personnel. The police handed him over to Parao police station which registered a case against him.

According to information, a person wearing Army uniform was wandering near the bus stand. The Army police on patrolling duty enquired of his identity. He disclosed himself as Shiv Kumar, an Army personnel.

When the Army police checked his identity documents it was found to be forged. Later the police reported the matter to the civil police.

Protest by bank officers today

The All-India Punjab and Sind Bank Officers Union will be holding its All-India Central Co-ordination meeting at the Red Cross Bhavan tomorrow to protest against the management’s decision to dismiss nearly 300 employees.

GS Khera, president of the union, said in the meeting the union leaders would be chalking out their next plan of action in an attempt to get the employees re-instated.

Mohammad Rafi remembered

The Sangeet Sabha, Patiala, organised the Mohammad Rafi memorial evening contest at the language department on the occasion of the singer’s birthday yesterday.

MC Commissioner MS Narang lit the lamp to inaugurate the evening. Prominent among those who were present were social worker Shaym Lal Navjot and chairman, anti-drug society, Dr Harkirat Singh Sidhu.

Paramjit Singh Parwana recited a shabad to start the proceedings.

Tejpreet leads BECC to victory

Patiala, December 26A fine all round performance by Tejpreet Singh (62 runs and 4 for 19) helped Black Elephant Cricket Club (BECC), Patiala, to defeat Sunshine School, Rohtak, by 42 runs in the first CSF Cup in Military Ground No. 1 today. It was a crucial match for BECC as they had lost the first match yesterday.

After winning the toss and electing to bat first, BECC scored 180 for 5 in allotted 35 overs. Skipper Tejpreet (62), Simran (35) and Jasanpreet Singh (26) were the main scorers of BECC. Rohtak boys also started their inning in sound knock and made 60 runs without losing any wicket. However, the boys could not perform consistently and were all out for 138.

Black Elephant CC, Patiala: 180 for 5 in 35 overs; Tejpreet (62), Simran (35), Jasanpreet Singh (26), Vikram (22), Subham (1/28) and Sagar (1/27);

Four shops burgled at Dera Bassi

In less than a week after three shops were burgled, yet another series of thefts at shops were reported here. Thieves decamped with cash and other valuables from four shops at Dera Bassi late last night.

According to sources, the first theft was reported at Anaj Mandi. The owner of the shop, Sunil Jain, alleged that an unidentified person broke the locks of his shop and decamped with Rs 1 lakh after breaking the cash box.

In another incident, thieves entered the utensils shop after cutting down the sheet of the main door. The owner of the house, Sunil Kumar, claimed that the thieves escaped with Rs 10,000. He alleged that the utensils worth Rs 15,000 were also missing.

In the third incident at main market, thieves decamped with cash and silver jewellery worth thousands of rupees. The thieves did not even spare the sweets shop as they decamped with Rs 4,000 and a few kg of sweets.

Sources said last week three thefts were also reported at shops in Ramlila ground. The residents alleged that the incidents of theft were on a rise and the police was unable to check such incidents. One of the residents said the police had failed to check crime in the area and the residents were feeling insecure.

A police official said he did not receive any complaint from the shopkeepers. After receiving the complaint a case would be registered and investigations would be started, he added.

One held for fraud

The local police yesterday arrested Rajiv Kumar of Sector 15 for selling shoes, clothes and other articles carrying the fake Puma logo.

He was held on the basis of a complaint by Juggal Kumar Ahuja of the Jai Mata Colony in Delhi.

A case was registered and the police started investigations.

Laptop stolen

Rishikesh of Sector 12 at Panchkula reported to the police that someone stole a laptop and some documents from his Bolero jeep (HR05S-6240) parked in front of a showroom in Sector 7 of Chandigarh on December 22. A case was registered and investigations were on.

Woman dead

Santosh Rani of Sector 29 succumbed to her injuries at the GMCH in Sector 32 today. According to the police, she fell down and was seriously injured when driver of a tractor (HR34A-0213) hit the rickshaw she was travelling in near the Poultry Farm Chowk yesterday and sped away. The Sector 31 police registered a case and investigations were on.

Loan

Vinod Kumar of Transport Nagar at Ramganj Mandi in Kota district of Rajasthan complained to the police that a finance company in Sector 34 had failed to provide him a loan of Rs 7 lakh even after taking Rs 36,000 in cash from him.

The police registered a case, arrested Rahul Aggarwal, Ashmi Gupta and Taj Mohammad, residents of Chandigarh, and started investigations.

Theft

Lalit Gupta of Industrial Area Phase II filed a complaint that someone stolen computer parts from his plot on the night of December 23. The police registered a case and started investigations.

DP Azad Academy drub DAVSSS-8

Excellent line and length spell by Talwinderjit Singh and Gaurav Singh helped Desh Prem Azad Academy to restrict the DAVSSS-8 to 140 runs in the Blue Chilly Cup Cricket Tournament for Under-16 being organised by Desh Prem Azad Cricket Academy here today.

DP Azad Cricket Academy registered their second successive victory by beating DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8, by five wickets.

After winning the toss, DAVSSS-8 elected to bat first and posted 140 all out in 40 overs.

Arvind Chauhan top scored with 37. Simranpreet Singh and Pradeep Kumar contributed 22 and 23 runs, respectively.

Talwinderjit Singh three for 27 and Gaurav Singh two for 37 did not allow any liberty to DAVSSS-8 batsmen to score freely and bundled them out with 10 overs to spare.

In reply, DP Azad Cricket Academy achieved the target in 35.3 overs by scoring 143 for the loss of five wickets.

Left hand batsman Talwinderjit played an unbeaten innings of 59, which contained ten boundaries. Gaurav Singh contributed 33 with the help of five boundaries. Daksh Aggarwal made 13. Vikas Chichi bagged three for 22.

In another match, Mohali Cricket Academy defeated Guru Nanak Public School (GNPS) Academy by 37 runs.

Mohali Cricket Academy batted first and hoisted 184 before being dismissed in 49.4 overs. Anmoljit (38), Pukhraj (28) and Amish Sidhu (20) were top scorers while Aditya two for 34, Arpit Singh two for 28 and Kuljinder Singh two for 38 were the main wicket takers for the GNPS Academy.

In reply, GNPS Academy was dismissed for 147 in 40.3 overs. Jasinder (four for 20) and Jagteshwar (four for 14) were the wrecker-in-chiefs of GNPS innings. Kuljidner Singh (37), Arpit Singh (22) and Abhishek Verma (15) played defiant knocks but could not avert defeat.

Parvesh shines in BTS Royals win

Once again fine all-round performance by Parvesh Sharma (33) and five wickets enabled BTS Royals to beat JMK International Cricket Academy, Pathankot, by (85) runs in the first Under-13 BTS Gold Cup Cricket Tournament held at Banyan Tree School, Sector 48, here today.

After winning the toss, BTS Royals elected to bat first and put up a modest total of 136 for the loss of two wickets in their stipulated 20 overs.

Parvesh Sharma (33), Yuvraj (47) and Honey (27) were the top scorers for their teams, while JMK’s Sagar took two wickets giving away 21 runs.

In reply, JMK International Cricket Academy was bundled out for 51 runs in 13 overs. Mohit Sharma (18) and Jatinder (19) were the only batsmen who showed some resistance to the BTS bowling.

Parvesh Sharma five for 14, Resham three for three and Amrit one for 12 runs were the main wicket takers for BTS Royals.

Score:

BTS Royals: 136 for two in 20 overs (Parvesh Sharma (33), Yuvraj (47), Honey 27 and Sagar 2/21).

In the second match, JMK International Cricket Academy, was again thrashed by DAV, Ambala, who won the match by 47 runs.

After winning the toss, JMK International Cricket Academy, elected to bowl first, however, its bowlers failed to restrict DAV, Ambala, batsmen who hit all around the ground and put up a modest total of 196 runs for their team in their stipulated 20 overs. Gagandeep 73, Sidarth 35 and Davish 30 were the top scorers for DAV. Sanyam was the only effective bowler who took two wickets giving away 31 runs.

In reply, JMK International Cricket Academy failed to achieve the target of 196 runs and scored only 149 runs losing nine wickets in their stipulated 20 overs. Sagar 70 and Mohit 27 were the top scorers for their team while Aseem two for 29, Davish two for 24 and Surdeep two for 32 runs were the main wicket takers for DAV, Ambala.

Rushil Avasthi and Anmol defeated Aashman and Himanshu 7-0 in the U-14 Gymkhana Lawn Tennis Tournament being organised by Sigma Events and Services at the Gymkhana Club, Sector 6, Panchkula, here today.

In the doubles open, Ajay Yashapal and Pintu defeated Dr SS Mehta and Sanjeev Sodhi 13-11, while Shalin Chandam and Navneet Kumar beat Himmat Singh and Dr Khular 13-2.
