Credit Card Code Theft
Fatehgarh Sahib, November 26 The police had yesterday arrested five persons, including a Coimbatore resident, for stealing credit card codes of tourists and illegally transferring money after using the codes through fake credit cards. During investigations, it was found that the accused used to give five per cent of the cash to the person who went for shopping with a fake identity proof, said SSP Dr Kaustubh Sharma. He said 15 per cent of the amount was given to the shopkeeper in lieu of cash instead of material purchase from the shop. The SSP said 10 credit cards of various banks of Sri Lanka, the US and France had been recovered from their possession. Police officials investigating the case said whenever a user used his credit card at a shop or a hotel, the accused, in connivance with the shopkeeper, retracted its code number and used it in another credit card. After stealing the code, they used to put it in another credit card and use the money of tourists. The main target of the gang were tourists who could not trace the accused once they reached their country. Once the accused got the code, they used to pass it over to an illegal credit card manufacturer in Kolkata, who supplied them with fake credit cards with original codes of foreigners. Police officials investigating the case said the accused had carried out transactions using fake credit cards worth lakhs of rupees at Patiala, Khanna and Amritsar during the past just six months. Fake identity cards and driver’s licences had also been recovered from their possession. The accused admitted to having purchased fake credit cards for Rs 1.11 lakh from Kolkata. The accused have been identified as Mohammad Javed of Coimbatore, Harmandeep Singh, alias Sambha, Gaurav Kumar, Gurvinder Singh Bopi, all residents of Batala, and Sandeep Singh of Verka in Amritsar. Police officials said the main accused, Viplov Shah, would be arrested soon. The accused were travelling in a Honda City car near Mandi Gobindgarh when they were arrested on a tip-off. They were produced in a local court and remanded in police custody till November 28. |

Fire at suitcase factory
Patiala, November 26 According to Rajiv Garg, owner of the factory, the fire was noticed at the factory around 7 am and the fire brigade was informed. Three fire tenders from Patiala and another from Rajpura were pressed into service to douse the flames. It took the firemen three hours to bring the fire under control. |

8 students booked for clash
Lalru, November 26 The investigating officer said Vimal, a resident of Banur, alleged that he was leaving the college when a group of college students allegedly waylaid him with sharp-edged weapons. After the attack, the students fled the scene, the police said. He was taken to the Civil Hospital, Dera Bassi, from where he was later referred to the GMCH-32, Chandigarh. The other victim, Sunil, a second-year engineering student, alleged that he was on his way to the college to submit his fee when Vimal and other youngsters attacked him with sharp-edged weapons and left him severely injured, the police added. He added that the attackers snatched his college fee. He was taken to the Civil Hospital. The investigating officer said a case had been registered after recording the statements of the injured. |
Man gets life for murder
Chandigarh, November 26 The convict, Inderjit Singh, was held guilty of the crime on November 24. The court of additional district and sessions judge Raj Shekhar Attri also slapped a fine of Rs 2,500 on him. On August 6, 2008, a woman in her mid-forties was rushed to the PGI in a semi-nude state, bearing severe head injuries. Two passersby had found her in an injured condition. The complainant, Satish Kumar, who was one of the passersby to have seen the woman being brutally beaten up. He told the police that the accused was trying to rape her. The police then arrested Inderjit, a resident of Attawa village. The woman, however, died on August 10. As per the prosecution, Inderjit had raped her, finding her alone behind a market in Palsora, and then disfigured her face by hitting her with a stone. The charges of rape could not be proved in court. The deceased could not be identified till date and her face was beyond recognition. |

Newborn’s body found
Chandigarh, November 26 Sources said the incident came to light around 10:30 am when a sweeper noticed the body in a dustbin outside a toilet in the gynaecology ward in the OPD. After cleaning the toilets, the sweeper emptied the dustbin and found the body. Shocked, he raised the alarm and soon, a lot of people assembled on the scene. The police was informed about the incident and it took the body into custody. The SHO of the Sector 11 police station said the body was shifted to the mortuary for postmortem examination. Meanwhile, inquest proceeding under Section 174 of the Criminal Procedure Code were initiated in this connection. |

Man run over by PRTC bus
Chandigarh, November 26 The police said the victim had been identified as 76-year-old Rakesh Kumar of Sector 32. He was walking down the road when a PRTC bus ran over him. He was rushed to the Sector 32 Government Medical College and Hospital, where he was declared brought dead. He had retired from the PRTC as director. His family refused to lodge a complaint against the bus driver, following which the police initiated inquest proceedings. Interestingly, a press note issued by the police said a case of causing death due to rash and negligent driving was registered in this regard. |

Chandigarh, November 26 The DSP (South) Jaswant Singh Khaira said the police arrested Sukhdev Singh of Sector 47 and Surjit Singh of Sector 51 on November 17 following the receipt of information. The police recovered two stolen Maruti 800 cars from them. During interrogation, they disclosed the name of their accomplice Raj Kumar, alias Raju. BMW leaves two students injured
Mohali, November 26 The car (PB 11 AK 5033) was being driven by a youth, who fled the scene after the accident. Parminder Singh was admitted to a private hospital with critical injuries. He suffered serious foot and arm injuries. Mohit, who was riding pillion, also suffered injuries in the accident. The victims were going towards Phase 11 when the BMW car coming from Sohana hit them. The motor cycle was badly damaged in the accident. The police has registered a case and is investigating the matter. |

Rs 3 lakh stolen from car
Mohali, November 26 According to sources, the victim had withdrawn the money from an Axis Bank branch in Phase 7 and gone to buy sweets from the Phase 5 market. Moments after he had parked his car in front of a jeweller’s shop in the market and gone to the sweets shop, an unidentified person opened the car and removed the cash kept under the front seat. The place where the incident reportedly took place is located in a busy area. The police is verifying the antecedents of the complaint before registering the case. Meanwhile, burglars struck again in Phase 5 and decamped with a car stereo after breaking into the car in a residential area. Burglars also broke into two other cars in the area. |

Panic as cops in mufti pick up 2
Panchkula, November 26 Believing it to be kidnapping, the family members informed the local police, which flashed a message throughout the district as well as neighboring areas of Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Chandigarh. However, the two later returned to their shop, much to the relief of the family. Superintendent of Police Maneesh Chaudhary said the Yamunanagar police officials had picked up Amit Chandana, owner of the showroom, and his friend Vinay for questioning related to some case registered with them. Man held for opening fire
Zirakpur, November 26 The shots were fired by Avtar Singh, a resident of Dashmesh Colony, who was roaming in an inebriated condition. He was later arrested by the police. The investigating officer stated that the incident took place around 11.30 am, when Avtar Singh, a property dealer, was moving towards to the godown area and suddenly fired two gunshots in air from his licensed .12 bore gun. The police reached the scene and arrested Avtar Singh. A case has been registered. |

Miscreants damage INLD leader’s car, house
Panchkula, November 26 Ashok Sherwal, general secretary of the INLD, was asleep at the time of the attack. Sherwal said he heard a big thud around 3.45 am and when he came out of the house, he found the windowpanes of his Scorpio and house damaged. Stones were also found in the courtyard and inside the car, he added. He had no enmity with anyone, claimed Sherwal. The police has registered a case in this regard. |

Rana triumphs in Air Force golf meet
Chandigarh, November 26 Wing Commander Titu Gill and Wg Cdr DS Bajwa were winners in the team event with Grp Capt PP Gill and Wing Commander Bhupinder finishing runners up. Grp Capt MS Sihota, who plays with a handicap of 15, won the nine-hole competition with Air Cdre BI Singh finishing runner-up. As many as 33 retired Air Force officers teed off in the competiton which has become a regular feature from its inception in 1995. The wooden spoon was taken away by Group Captain Dhadli. 85-year-old Sqn Ldr JS Gill was honoured for being the oldest participant. Moin Grewal putted her way to glory, winning the ladies putting event with Nagi finishing runner-up. CPC, GGSC-26 emerge volleyball champs
Chandigarh, November 26 Final match in women section was played between GGSC-26 and GCG-11. GGS Club defeated opponent team in three sets- 25-18, 25-19 and 25-14. Poonam of the victorious team displayed excellent game and the opponent team could not defend her powerful smashes. Poonam was selected best player in the women section. In men section, final match was played between CPC and Athletic Club, Sector 7. CPC defeated Athletic Club Sector 7 in a five-set thriller. In the first set, CPC dominated the proceedings and did In the second set Athletic Club 7 regrouped and gain confidence and fought for each point at 24-24, and won the set at 27-25. In the third set, CPC team bounced back and won the set by 25-19. In the fourth set, players of Athletic Club-7 changed their technique and the opponent could not follow them. |
Holy Child girls on winning spree
Chandigarh, November 26 DPS-Pinjore took the third position defeating St Xavier’s School. Gul Walia of Holy Child School scored 22 points, a record that she has been maintaining for the past few tournaments. She won the trophy for being the best player in girl’s category. In boys’ category, St Xavier’s School, Panchkula, could not get the better of DPS-Pinjore who won with a huge margin of 20 points, scoring 60 points against 40 by St Xavier’s School. Karan Malik was the highest scorer of DPS-Pinjore with 34 points to his credit followed by Tarun who scored 15 points. Jacob pat for CHA lads
Chandigarh, November 26 It was the brainchild of Lt. Gen (Retd) Jacob under whose initiative Chandigarh Football Academy came into existence in 2000. After two years, the Chandigarh administration introduced Hockey Academy with the induction of 24 players in the age group of 11-12 for a six-year scientific training. Later, both academies were combined and came to be known as Chandigarh Football Hockey Academy (CFHA). He congratulated the former Chandigarh sports director-cum-additional deputy commissioner Inderjit Singh Sandhu for his efforts. |

Chandigarh, November 26 A felicitation programme for winners of the 17th All-Indian Forest Games and Sports Meet held on the Panjab University Campus in 2008 was organised at the Lake Sports Complex here yesterday. Nidhi Shrivastava, Gurdeep Singh, Kulwinder Kumar Bhullar and Harinder Singh Bhullar got a cash reward of Rs 20,000 each for winning gold medals . Kulwinder, Balbir Singh and Amarjeet Kaur got Rs 10,000 each for winning silver medals, while Charanjeet Singh and Kulwinder got Rs 5,000 for bronze medals. Chandigarh, November 26 The spokesperson for the department while giving details said trials for volleyball (U-14, U-17 boys) will be held on November 27 at 9 am at the Sports Complex, Sector 7, while for girls, the trials will be held on November 28 at 9 am at the same venue. For weightlifting (U-17, U-19 boys) trials will be held at the Sector 42 Sports Complex and for sqay martial art (U-17, U-19 boys and girls) at Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector- 21, on November 28 at 9 am. |
