Cultural bonanza at British school

British Co-Ed Junior and Prep School organised a variety shows here recently.

Deputy Commissioner of Patiala, Dipinder Singh, inaugurated the function. School principal Rosa Kucharskyj and Tejinder Singh accompanied the chief guest.

It was a great delight to see children in the age group of three to five years performing confidently and enthusiastically on the stage.

It was the hard work and a great effort on part of the young performers to show their talent and skills on the stage.

There was a wide range of items, including an English song and a Hindi song by The British Co-Ed choir, different songs and dance performances.

Chief guest Dipinder Singh appreciated the hard work and efforts made by the young ones and staff members.

6 vehicles collide, 2 hurt

Dappar, November 16
The early morning fog has started taking its toll on the Chandigarh-Ambala National Highway.

Six vehicles rammed into each other near the Dappar Toll Plaza today morning, in which two persons sustained minor injuries.

Traffic remained standstill for more than a hour, as the matter was resolved after intervention of the local police.

The police stated that the incident took place at around 8 am when a truck coming from Ambala side suddenly applied brakes after crossing the toll plaza where a CTU bus, a canter, a Haryana roadways bus, a Tavera and an Indigo car rammed into each other.

Two persons sustained minor injuries in the collision.

However, the police said the accident took place due to heavy fog and the vehicles owners left the place without any complaints.

National Press Day observed

The department of journalism and mass communication, Amar Shaheed Baba Ajit Singh Jujhar Singh Memorial College, Bela, and the Ropar Press Club observed the National Press Day today.

Ropar SSP Laxmi Kant Yadav was the chief guest. Yadav said being the fourth pillar of democracy, media had an important role to play to ensure fair functioning of other pillars, legislature, judiciary and executive.

He also urged the media to make truth as the hallmark of their journalistic endeavours by following the principle of “satyam, shivam sundaram” and highlight the problems of society for their prompt redressal and urged the journalists to follow journalistic ethics.

Amar Shaheed Baba Ajit Singh Jujhar Singh Memorial College of Pharmacy director, Dr GD Gupta, felicitated mediapersons and students of journalism department and said the media should play a proactive role for the betterment of society.

Highlighting the importance of the day, the Ropar Press Club president said the National Press Day was observed every year to commemorate the constitution of the Press Council of India with an aim to preserve the freedom of press and maintained high standards of journalism.

Workshop on role of faculty in professional institute

A workshop on the “Overall role and responsibility of faculty in professional institute” was organised at MM Engineering College, Mulana, today.

Around 100 lecturers participated in the workshop.

MP Sinha, executive director GHRDC, was the keynote speaker. While addressing the faculty, he said a lot of changes had been coming in the teaching method.

He asked the faculty members to keep themselves acquainted with the latest knowledge to give more authenticated information to the students.

MM University Chancellor Tarsem Kumar Garg and Vice-Chancellor SJ Damle also addressed the participants.

Another workshop was organised by the MCA department on “Career in Dot Net Technology.”

Dilip Jha, business manager Ducal Institute, Noida, while addressing the participants said it was in the interest of the students to attend such workshop to channelise their career in various directions.

Principal Anil Kapil also interacted with the participants.

Conference on endoscopic spine surgery ends

The international conference on endoscopic spine surgery concluded at Gian Sagar Medical College and Hospital, Banur.

Participating delegates performed the procedure taught during the conference on cadavers and plastic spine models.

The Chandigarh Chapter of Indian Orthopaedic Association had organised the conference in collaboration with the Arthroscopy and Spinal Endoscopy Centre, Chandigarh.

The participants were delivered lecture on endospine features and operative technique of endoscopic disc surgery.

Around 100 Indian and foreign doctors, especially neuro and orthopaedic surgeons, with interest in endoscopic spine surgery participated in the conference whose primary aim was to make spine surgery less traumatic for patients devising the endoscopic method.

The intensive two-day course training has instilled a confidence among surgeons to perform these endoscopic spine procedures in their hospitals, thus advancing the treatment of the spine disorders.

The course concluded with closing remarks and thanks by Dr Mohinder Kaushal, organising chairman, on behalf of the organising committee to all course participants on making this course a value based by their participation and deliberations.

School organises annual function

Blossoms Senior Secondary School organised its 27th annual function at the school here recently.

Justice Surinder Singh Saron from Chandigarh was the chief guest. The programme started with Saraswati ‘vandana’, followed by orchard and jungle presentations.

Various mythological and political characters were presented by the preparatory section. The special presentation ‘Tribute to womanhood’ was highly appreciated.

A cultural programme was also organised by the students. The school annual report was presented by Sant Chahal, trustee of the school.

Justice Surinder Singh distributed prizes among the students. Inter-house trophy was given to Ashoka House.

Nitin Grover, Nikita Rai and Indermeet Singh Sarao were awarded merit certificates for the 2008-09 session. Principal H Oberoi appreciated the efforts of teachers and students and thanked chief guest.

Jaskaran declared best actor

The North Zone Cultural Centre, Patiala, in collaboration with Rang Darpan organised the Children Theatre Festival at the Virsa Vihar Complex near the Sheran Wala gate here today.

The festival was inaugurated by president Prema Nayar, State Bank of Patiala Ladies Club, by lighting the traditional lamp.

Municipal Corporation Commissioner Manjit Singh Narang was the chief guest.

The schoolchildren presented “Vichare bache girgit” and “Murkhanand” during the theatre festival. The judges declared Jaskaran Singh of Green Well High School as the best actor.

The students of Arya Girls’ High School also left the audience awestruck with their performance, wherein gidda and bhangra was choreographed with sleek.

Kathak dance was performed by special students from the School for Deaf and Dumb, Saifidipur, with passion.

Isha Dang was honoured for her dance performances while Kavita Sharma was felicitated for her contribution in the children theatre activities.

Residents of the town took out a shobha yatra here today. A warm welcome was accorded to saint Nirale Baba.

A large number of devotees joined the yatra.

Kirtan mandlis were reciting bhajans.

Rishabh Jain, president, SS Jain Sabha, said Nirale Baba would inaugurate the Jain Bhawan and deliver religious discourse in the evening.

Jagdeep Singh Cheema, district president, SAD, and Lal Chand Jindal, district president, BJP, will grace the occasion. Nirale Baba was accompanied by Satti Maan Pushpa Devi and Shalu Maharaj.

1 held with marijuana

A resident of Chhattisgarh has been arrested by the police for possessing 3 kg of marijuana. He was arrested by railway police officials from the local railway station. He was carrying the narcotic in the Chhattisgarh Express.

A case in this connection has been registered against him. The police is investigating the case.

One killed in accident

Lalru, November 16
A 30-year-old daily wager died after being hit by a Maruti car on the Ambala-Chandigarh highway near the ITI chowk on Sunday night. He succumbed to injuries here this morning at GMCH-32, Chandigarh.

The deceased was identified as Pala Ram, a resident of Bhagwasi village, Lalru.

The police stated that the incident took place around 9.15 pm when he was going to Bhagwasi village from Lalru on his rickshaw when a speeding Maruti car hit the rickshaw from behind. A passerby took him to the Dera Bassi Civil Hospital from where he was referred to GMCH-32. However, the car driver fled the scene, leaving the vehicle behind, the police added.

The body had been handed over to the family after conducting a postmortem. A case has been registered against the car driver.

Dhiraj fashions CSE win

The department of CSE, Doaba Institute of Engineering and Technology, organised a cricket cup in memory of their student Deepak Kumar.

Batting first, the pharmacy team could score only 129 runs and was bundled out in 25.5 overs with Ajay top scoring with a knock of 29 runs and Gaurav scoring 27 runs.

The pick of bowlers from CSE was Arun Kumar, who claimed three wickets for 27 runs and Arun who took two wickets for 22 runs. The CSE scored 130 runs and romped home in the 35th over after losing nine wickets with Dhiraj Mishra scoring 36 runs. Dhiraj was declared the best batsman, Arun Kumar as the best bowler, best wicketkeeper title went to Ankit Verma and Dheeraj was declared all rounder.

Ex-protector of emigrants convicted

The CBI special court today convicted former protector of emigrants (PoE) KL Gandhi in a graft case dating back to 2006.

The court of Darshan Singh today held Gandhi guilty of corruption. The quantum of sentence would be pronounced on November 18.

On March 29, 2006 the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) booked the (PoE), Chandigarh, along with a clerk and a peon in his office in a corruption case.

CBI officials had said Sohan Lal, a peon in the office of the PoE, was caught red-handed while accepting Rs 75,000 as bribe from a local travel agent on behalf of Gandhi in the office premises. Sohan Lal had later become a prosecution witness in the case.

Another employee of the PoE, Noor-ud-din, a clerk, was also nabbed for allegedly directing the peon to accept the bribe. The court had acquitted him earlier.

The clerk and the peon had told the raiding team that the money was being accepted on behalf of the PoE.

The bribe was demanded for giving the mandatory clearance in some cases forwarded by a recruiting agent.

A case under section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, and section 120-B of the IPC was registered against the trio. The CBI special court later framed charges against Gandhi on May 13, 2007.

Theft at Sec 7 temple, gurdwara

Thieves broke open the locks of a temple and a gurdwara in Sector 7 here last night and decamped with cash boxes containing thousands of rupees.

Head granthi Baldev Singh of Gurdwara Singh Sabha, Sector 7, filed a complaint alleging that Rs 25,000 had been stolen from the cash box last night. The theft came to light at around 3.30 am when a sewadar woke up and found the lock of the gurdwara main door broken.

He also saw the cash box lying ransacked and informed the head granthi, who further informed the police. A case has been registered.

In another incident, thieves struck into a nearby Sanatan Dharam Triveni Mandir and took away two cash boxes, ornaments and canopy of idols.

The temple authorities said they could not give estimate of the loss at this stage. Anil Jindal, temple secretary, said the matter was reported to the police.

They noticed the locks of the temple broken in the wee hours.

Pirated CDs seized

The police has arrested Krishann Kumar of Mani Majra from near the level crossing in Mani Majra yesterday, while allegedly carrying 105 pirated CDs. A case has been registered.

Theft

Vinod Kumar of Sector 47 reported that someone had stolen four gold sets, a gold kara, two gold rings and other articles from his residence yesterday by breaking open the grills.

In another incident, Vivek Sharma of Sector 37-C reported that someone had stolen gold ornaments, gold set and a pair of gold earrings from his sister's residence in the same sector by breaking open the locks. Two separate cases have been registered.

Motorcyclist dies in mishap

Chandigarh, November 16
A 35-year-old man, Madan Lal, died in a road accident involving a car and a motorcycle near the transport light point here yesterday.

The mishap occurred around 9:40 pm at the intersection when an unidentified car rammed into his motorcycle. His wife Rani, who was riding pillion, escaped with minor injuries.

The victims were rushed to the Sector 16 Government Multi-Specialty Hospital, where Madan Lal was declared brought dead.

The doctors kept his wife under observation. She was not informed about the death of her husband. He is survived by his wife and two minor children. A case was registered.

In another incident, Sudhir Kaushal of Kangra in Himachal Pradesh reported to the police that Pawan Kumar from Uttar Pradesh rammed his truck into his car near the roundabout separating sectors 40, 41, 54 and 55 on Sunday afternoon. The police arrested the driver.

Sidhu brothers bag golds in world games

Advocate Gurjiwan Singh Sidhu (75), former joint director, public relations department, Punjab, and his younger brother Pargat Singh (75), former managing director, Sugarfed, Punjab, have not only brought laurels to the city but also to the country by winning gold medals in the World Masters Games held in Sydney, Singapore and Malaysia this year.

Gurjiwan has bagged two bronze medals in shot put and hammer throw in the 75 plus category. He has also won three gold medals in shot put, javelin and discus throw in the 23rd Malaysian International Open Masters Athletics Championships-2009, which concluded on November 8 and two golds in the 30th Annual Track and Field Championship-2009, which was held in October at the Bukit Gombak Stadium, Singapore.

Similarly, his brother Pargat Singh has bagged two gold medals in the shot put and discus throw in the 65 plus category in the championship, which was held in Singapore.

Gurjiwan, who belongs to Poohla village, Bathinda, Punjab, said his son motivated him to take part in the games.

He added his coach Iqbal Singh helped him prepare for the games. He said his training programme included cycling in the morning, jogging, lightweight training and yoga exercises. He said after winning a gold medal in Hyderabad in shot put he never looked back and again won a gold medal in shot put in the masters games held in Chennai, Pondichery, Jaipur and Hissar in 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008.

He said he aimed at becoming the world champion in shot put in his age category.

PNB thrash MP XI in hockey

Punjab National Bank thrashed MP XI (6-0) in the 46th Jindal Steel Nehru Hockey Tournament being held at the Hockey Stadium, Sector 42, here today.

PNB’s Damandeep Singh scored the first goal in the eighth minute, while Ravinder scored the second goal in 10th minute. Lakhwinder scored two successive goals in the 32nd and 33rd minutes of the game to give 4-0 lead to his team at the end of the first half.

In the second half, MP XI attacked their opponents but PNB’s players foiled their attempts and took the ball again in their control. Banmali scored the fifth goal in the 48th minute, while Yudhvir Singh scored the sixth goal in the 54th minute to seal the fate of the MP team.

Earlier, in the first match, Rock Rovers defeated Indian Air Force, Chandigarh, (5-4). N Rawat of rovers scored the first goal in sixth minute, however, the IAF scored the equaliser in the 14th minute through Prabhakar. In the 18th minute, Virender of IAF scored the goal in the 18th minute to give 2-0 lead to his team. Rock Rovers again took control of the ball and scored their second goal in the 32nd minute through Gurjinder Singh. However, Raesh of IAF scored the third goal in the 38th minute to take 3-2 lead in the first half.

In the second half, Gagandeep (Sr) of Rock Rovers scored the equaliser in the 42nd minute, but again IAF’s Virender Singh scored his individual second goal in the 59th minute to give 4-3 lead to his team. Gurjinder of Rovers also scored his second individual goal in the 61st minute to again bring the score at par and at the end of the game, IAF’s Gangandeep (Sr) scored his individual second goal in the 75th minute of the game to take 5-4 lead in the match.

The last match between Central Railway, Mumbai, and Karnataka XI turned out to be one-sided affair, as the latter won the match by 5-1.

At the start of the match, both Central Railway and Karnataka launched attack on their opponents but could not score till 33rd minute of the game however, Karnataka’s CK Utthappa scored the first goal for his team in 34th minute to take 1-0 lead in the first half.

In the second half, Karnataka’s KM Somanna scored the second goal in the 53rd minute and just five minutes later Anthony of Karnataka scored the goal in the 58th minute to give 3-0 lead to his team. Central Railway’s Deepak Lakra scored the first and the only goal for his team in the 59th minute of the game to reduce the margin, however, Karnataka scored two goals in the 60th minute and 67th minute through Utthappa and Denesh, respectively, to take 5-1 lead.

New Public School girls victorious

New Public School, Sector 18-B, Chandigarh, had mixed fortune as their girls team claimed the Shanta H Singh Basketball Tournament, while their boys squad lost to Police DAV of Amritsar in the Rao Jai Singh Basketball Tournament at NPS here today. The NPS girls overcame a tough resistance from Chakwal National School, Kurali, in the final by 61-49 points.

Chakwal National School got the better of their rivals by winning the third quarter (16-14). However, NPS displayed their talent and outplayed Chakwal National School in the fourth and final quarter with a good margin of 16-8 and strongly tilted the scales in their favour. Their prolific scorers were Versha and Neha, who contributed 28 and 17 points, respectively. Pooja and Neelam gave outstanding display for Chakwal National School by scoring 25 and 12 points, respectively.

Brief scores (final): New Public School, Sector 18-B, Chandigarh, (Versha 28, Neha 17) beat Chakwal National School, Kurali, (Pooja 25, Neelam 12). Quarter-wise scores (13-12, 18-13, 14-16, 16-8).

Police DAV of Amritsar won the Rao Jai Singh Memorial Basketball Tournament at the expense of New Public School (70-55) in the boys final. It was in the second quarter that Police DAV virtually assured themselves of the title by winning it with a big margin of 22-7. They had prevailed over their opponents in the first evenly contested quarter (15-11). Cheered up by their colleagues, NPS boys gave their best performance by winning the third quarter with 19-14. They maintained their form but went down fighting in the fourth quarter by just one point (19-18).

For Police DAV, Tajinder (19) and Arjunveer (18) turned up with a fine performance. Gurmeet (18) and Sartaj (16) put up a good show to reduce the margin for NPS.

10-year-old Karandeep heads IGU merit list

Ten-year-old Karandeep Singh Kochhar recorded victories in the Nick Faldo Series Asia qualifying round and the Albatross All-India Junior Event in Kolkata to consolidate his top slot in the D Category (under 11) of the Indian Golf Union.

A Class V student of St John's High School, Chandigarh, Karandeep finished runner-up in the Eastern India junior event to head the IGU leaderboard by a margin of 18 points over his nearest rival Arjun Prasad of Nasik. With one more event to go on the IGU junior calendar, Karandeep is all set to wrap up the year with a number one slot in his category.

In the Nick Faldo Series qualifying round at the Royal Calcutta Golf Club, Karandeep tallied a total of 40 over 256 to edge out Arjun Puri of Delhi by one stoke for the title. His best card was an eight over 80 on the second day.

Karandeep who plays golf for fun, has been doing well in his category. He again showed his winning streak, when he defeated Digraj of Gurgaon by six strokes to win the Albatross All-India Junior Golf title at Tollygunje Golf Club, Kolkata, carding a seven over 77.

Besides, heading the IGU leaderboard in the D Category, Karandeep is also on top of the merit list of the US Kids Golf in India in his category. Karandeep, who considers his grandfather GS Kochhar his mentor, took to the game at the tender age of three and played his first IGU tournament when just five.

Jessie Grewal, director of the National Golf Academy of India, who has been grooming Karandeep from the age of three, finds him to be a natural golfer, who plays competitive golf with a spirit of fun. Ever since he took to competitive golf he has been winning regularly.

Jesie Grewal says Karandeep is a good striker of the ball and is bound to make it big one day.

CCET team record victory

Chandigarh College of Engineering and Technology (CCET) beat Kenway College of Education, Abohar, in the Panjab University Inter-College Cricket (men) R-Division Tournament being played on the PU grounds today.

Batting first, Kenway college were all out for 74 runs in 21.1 overs. Vishnu Kumar with 24 runs and Sukhjinder with 17 were the main scorers, while Bharat (3 for 10) and Prabhjot (3 for 12) were the main wicket takers for the team.

In reply, Chandigarh team achieved the target of 75 by losing five wickets in 21.2 overs. Sahil Luthra (19), Mayank (15) and Jagdeep (21 not out) were the main scorers for the team, while Sukhjinder and Surinder took two wickets each by giving 25 and 26 runs, respectively.

Maharashtra shuttlers shine

Three teams from Maharashtra won various events and steered into the final of the 18th CBSE Badminton Tournament to be held at Shivalik Public School on November 17.

In the semifinal match for boys (U-14), Maharashtra Bhavan Vidya Mandir beat Little Angels, Sonepat, (2:0), while in the girls U-16 category, Modern School, Nagpur, beat Centre Point School, Nagpur, (2:0).
