Pinjore-Parwanoo bypass work in full swing
Our Correspondent

Kalka, November 15
The four-laning work of the Zirakpur-Parwanoo road, which also includes the Pinjore-Parwanoo bypass, is in full swing these days.

The bypass is a part of the Rs 600 crore NHAI project to make the Zirakpur-Parwanoo road a four-lane stretch.

The work on this 11 km Kalka-Pinjore bypass project has already been begun from near the Mullah road, which is about 400 m away from the Pinjore Garden and would join the National Highway near Timber Trail in Parwanoo.

The completion of this bypass would mean faster access to the plains and relief from the biggest bottleneck of the NH-22 for the people coming from Himachal Pradesh.

Coupled with four laning of the National Highway 22, it would make the traffic movement convenient.

Official sources of NHAI revealed that work on the project had also gained momentum and was in full swing and it was expected to be ready for the public by August 31, 2010. The Pinjore-Kalka-Parwanoo bypass with most of the areas falling in the hilly area, includes 15 bridges and five underpasses.

The Pinjore-Parwanoo bypass, which had irked the residents of Kalka and Pinjore for more than 25 years, would now be proven a viable solution to lessen the traffic congestion on the NH-22, which passes though main bazars of Kalka and Pinjore. According to a survey report, on an average over 30,000 vehicles pass through on the National Highway-22 on daily basis.

Chandigarh, November 15
With the arrest of four persons today, the police claims to have busted a gang involved in dismantling stolen vehicles and disposed them of in scrap.

The police has recovered eight vehicles, including five jeeps and pick-up trucks, from the accused. DSP (South) Jaswant Singh Khaira said the police had constituted a team to nab vehicle thieves following information of the activities of the gang.

The police had learnt that the gang, which had recently started a workshop-cum-godown in Jagatpura village in Mohali, had been disposing of vehicles in scrap after dismantling them.

The DSP said that following a tip-off a ‘naka’ was laid in Burail area on Saturday and the police team stopped a Mahindra pick-up truck (CH-O4-C-7681) carrying scrap.

The driver of the vehicle, Sardara Singh, told the police that his truck was hired to transport the material to a junk dealer, Satish Kumar, in Burail.

During preliminary inquiry, the diver revealed the place from where the material was loaded in his truck. The police conducted a raid and arrested the owner of the godown-cum-workshop, 29-year-old Raj Kumar alias Raja, and Deepak Kumar, both residents of Narwana in Haryana. The police also arrested Jugal Kishore of Burail, a gas-welding expert, who would cut the stolen vehicles to dismantle them.

Raja said he had taken the godown on rent for Rs 8,000 per month some three months back. Deepak used to steal vehicles using duplicate keys. They generally looked for Toyota Quails and Mahindra trucks, which he claimed were easy to open. He revealed that they used to get anything between Rs 20,000 to 25,000 by selling the vehicles in scrap. Deepak said Satish bought the scrap at the rate of Rs 15 per kg.

The police said four Toyota Qualis, a Tata Indigo car, a Mahindra Pick-Up truck and three motorcycles had been recovered from the accused. While the Qualis and were in moving condition, the rest had been dismantled and were recovered in parts only.

The police said the accused had stolen six vehicles form the city and two each from Himachal Pradesh and Zirakpur. A case under Sections 379, 411 and 120-B of the IPC has been registered against them.
