Competitions held
: Poster-making, candle and lamp decoration competitions were organised at Kenway College of Education on Sunday as part of Gurpurb celebrations. Monika and Kirandeep got first and second position, respectively, in poster making while Ankita and Navpreet Kaur were winners in candle and lamp decoration contests. Ajmer Singh, in charge of the Punjabi Association, was the convener on the occasion.

BEd teachers protest
: A meeting of the BEd Teachers’ Front, led by Karamjeet Singh Jalal and Sukhdarshan Singh, was held at the Teachers’ Home here on Sunday. The members of the Front also carried out a rally to protest against the state government for the meagre salaries being given to the teachers. The Front also announced that a state-level rally would soon be organised in case the salaries were not revised.

Freshers’ party: Students of North West Institute of Engineering and Technology organized a freshers party to welcome newcomers recently. S. Lakhbir Singh Gill, chairman, was the chief guest on the occasion. The programme started with introduction by Prof RK Bhushan.A colourful cultural programme followed. The chairman and principal Dr IK Garg gave away the prizes.

Badungar’s appointment: The Backward Society Welfare Organisation (BSWO), Bathinda, has hailed the appointment of Kirpal Singh Badungar as the chairman of the Backward Classes’ Commission, Punjab, said Piara Singh and Rattan Singh, office-bearers of the BSWO, in a press release.

Van Mahotsav: Activists of the Ashirwad Club Muktsar celebrated ‘Van Mahotsav’ at Desh Bhagat Dental College and Hospital, Muktsar. On the occasion, members of the club planted 100 saplings to minimise the pollution to some extent.

CM greets people on Gurpurb
: Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and Deputy CM Sukhbir Singh Badal on Sunday extended warm greetings to Punjabis living in the country and abroad on the occasion of the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev. They said Guru Nanak was a spiritual master who showed the path of salvation to the mankind by spreading the message of love and oneness. Punjab Pradesh Congress president Mohinder Singh Kaypee and Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader Rajinder Kaur Bhattal also greeted people on the occasion. 

Khamano
Two booked for burning paddy straw
: The Khamano police has registered a case against two persons of Hawara Kalan village for burning paddy straw. Burning of paddy straw has been banned in the state. The accused have been identified as Manjinder Singh and Satnam Singh, both brothers. A temporary shed was also gutted. A case under Sections 188 and 427 of the IPC has been registered.

Kapal Mochan
Fake currency seized
: The police seized fake currency notes worth Rs 37,000 from two residents of Patiala near Udam Singh Chowk in Kapal Mochan here today. The duo identified as Surmukh Singh and Harmesh of Patiala was caught while they were purchasing some household items by paying fake currency, said police sources. The CIA staff recovered fake currency notes, including of Rs 1,000 and Rs 100, worth Rs 37,000.

Function organised
: Success of the most beneficial scheme like the National Rural Employment Guarantee Agency (NREGA) scheme totally depends on the awakening of the villagers for whom this scheme is meant. This was stated by Chief Judicial Magistrate Rakesh Chaudhary while presiding over a day-long seminar on NREGA on Saturday. The function was organised under the aegis of District Legal Services Authority in connection with the “people awakening campaign” regarding their rights as citizens. This seminar was organised at Chadole.

MANDI
Man held with charas
: The police has arrested one Jasvinder Singh, a resident of Mazari, Khanna, Punjab, under the NDPS Act recovering 1.8 kg of charas from him while he was on his way walking from Kullu towards Mandi. According to the police, Jasvinder was caught by the police patrol team at Kenchi Morh on the NH21 at Pandoh. After search, the police recovered the charas consignment from him kept in a plastic bag. The Mandi SP said after the arrest the investigation was on.

Rape case registered: The police has registered a case of attempt to rape under Sections 376 and 511 of the IPC on the complaint of victim’s father of Sangari village at the Padhar police station. The father alleged that when he reached home on Saturday he spotted that the accused, Latu, a resident of Pari, was raping his daughter at his house. The police have yet to be arrest the accused.

Theft case: Shopkeeper Ashwani Kumar in Sandhol lodged a complaint that when he went back to open his shop on Saturday, he found that articles worth Rs 25,000 were missing from the shop. The police has registered a case and search to hunt the thief was on.

NURPUR
One killed
: Ajay Kumar, 17, son of Khem Chand of Bhadroya, died on the spot and the pillion rider, Kewal Kumar, 28, was seriously injured when their scooter hit a canter coming from the opposite side near Dakki bus stop here on Saturday. The victims were rushed to the Civil Hospital where Ajay was declared brought dead and Kewal was referred to Tanda Medical College but his family took him to a private hospital at Pathankot. The police has registered a case under Sections 279, 337 and 304-A of the IPC against the driver.

Registration of pvt ayurvedic docs sought
: Members of All-Jammu and Kashmir Ayurvedic Congress (AJKAC) yesterday held a meeting and demanded the registration of all private Indian System of Medicines (ISM) practitioners under the Jammu and Kashmir Ayurvedic Unani Practitioners Act, 1959. The meeting was chaired by state president TR Gupta. All district presidents also participated in the meeting and passed many resolutions. Dr Satya Gupta, general secretary, AJKAC, stressed the release of third-time bound promotion in favour of all eligible ISM doctors without any delay.

Mega Lok Adalat Week extended: The Mega Lok Adalat has been extended till November 9 in view of the overwhelming response. This was officially announced here on Saturday. 

Rohini wins debate: Rohini Mahajan from Government College for Engineering and Technology won the first prize in the inter-college debate on “Globalisation has posed a threat to the co-operative sector in India”. Vandana Sharma and Pryati Sharma from Government College for Women, Gandhi Nagar, won the second and third prizes, respectively. The consolation prize went to Tanvir Ahmed from the PG Department of English, Jammu University.
